"Seven people dead in Capitol Hill shooting"

... is the tragic headline on the Seattle Times website this morning.

At around 7 a.m. a man walked into a blue rental home in the 2100 block of East Republican Street and opened fire, killing six people. More than a dozen people who attended the party were relaxing inside after a late night party when the shooting happened, said Seattle police spokesman Rich Pruitt.
UPDATE: The P-I's article includes details confirming it is this house.

The Stranger blog has lots more.

1. Not to downplay the tragedy, but what mother lets a 15 year old go to an all-night rave with an 18 year old boyfriend and not come home until after 7 a.m.?

2. "what mother lets a 15 year old go to an all-night rave with an 18 year old boyfriend and not come home until after 7 a.m.?"

Probably the same kind that got knocked up at 16 and then loses her kid for the day...

3. Kids need supervision. Apparently they need armed supervision. It is pretty sketchy that this happened. It is just one more reason that you will never find me in Capitol hill.

4. How many lives could have been saved if but one person at the party was armed and trained with a concealed weapon. I hate events like this because the anti-gun lobby will latch on to it as proof that firearms are the root evil, when in my opinion the crazy nut was the root evil and the lack of people ready to defend themselves an exacerbating factor.

Let this be (another) lesson that the police can't always protect you. While the police are a useful resource so is a .38 revolver.

5. This place is on the cusp of the Gred Nickels'"Capitol Hill Urban Village" -- primary home to many dozens of such children. I am susprised something like this has not happened before --

I would hope that his tragedy will enliven a public debate on the under-tow of the urban toilet culture that pervades this city...

6. The best deterrent against those who would shoot you or rob you at gunpoint is their suspicion that you might also have a weapon and shoot them back. We can't expect our police to keep crime from happening. The best they can do is arrive during or after the crime. I like the added fear factor for the bad guys: a combination of tough time and the fear that they might be accosting another armed person.

7. ...where Little League baseball games were underway Saturday morning.

The last line in both the KOMO and PI stories.

Just WTF does that have to do with the story. Other than trying to scare people.

Pray for the families of the victims.

8. It's Capitol Hill - aka "Freak Steet"; does any weird thing that happens there surprise anybody?

Cripes, I saw a girl sell her ass for a couple burritos there one time, that should tell you all you need to know about the area.

9. Not to sound flippant about any of this, because it is a tragedy, but its almost sad that all of the reports says that drugs and alcohol may have been involved. These kids had just come back from a rave. Of course drugs and alcohol were involved. The question is whether or not they were a factor in the shooting. I also find it rather disturbing that some of the reports say there were kids leaving the home after all of this went down. I understand fleeing for your life, but to not stay afterwards to make sure your friends were ok is a bit disgusting. I am also curious to know whether or not the police had ever been to this house before, because from the neighbors statements it seems like this place was a big-time disturbance in the neighborhood. All that being said, my prayers are with the victims and their families.

10. How many lives could have been saved if but one person at the party was armed and trained with a concealed weapon.

Probably none. If one of the people over 21 there had been properly trained to use a gun and had a concealed permit, they should have also known enough to not go to a party with a bunch of drunk minors and drink beer all night while packing a gun. Same reason I don't pack when I go to a bar. Well, that and being in possesion of a firearm while intoxicated is illegal.

Alcohol + handgun = a really bad idea.

12. This was just an evil tragedy!

It will be interesting to find out what this guys motive was...if he had any..

Probably just a nutcase at the boiling point - combined with a group of kids who worship the dead....A lethal mix!

Parents - don't let your kids grow up to be goths! It's ugly, stupid, dangerous - and really doesn't look good and their resum'e.....or their headstone....

13. ...combined with a group of kids who worship the dead...

I don't think they worshiped the dead or were necessarily goths. It was my understanding it was just a theme party, no different than, say, an 80's party.

14. It actually surprises me that something this insane hasn't happened on Capitol Hill already.

After all, it's the most insane neighborhood in an increasingly insane city.

15. "I don't think they worshiped the dead or were necessarily goths"

They were goth...(or goth wannabe's)...

The party wasn't a one-night goth "theme"...It's the usual for these kids...and is very popular at the raves...

I'm seeing this goth crap at the middle schools and even the elementary schools lately....

Parent's have got to get a grip on their kids! That scene isn't healthy for anyone - regardless of today's shooting..

16. Unfortunately, the main reason there were so many deaths in this shooting is that the killer chose to use that shotgun of his and not the AK weapon he had in the car.
It will be interesting to see how long the sick bastard planned this and what his so-called motivations were.
I wonder why he chose to wait to do this at the house an not the larger warehouse party. Where there probably would have been more casualties just from a stampede.

17. Goth male + Goth female= Goth children. Stupid is as stupid does and "tolerance" does not serve us well in this instance. Sometimes we must be intolorant of individual behavior.

Posted by: Elaine on March 25, 2006 10:25 PM
18. Please. Do you think Boss Hogg and his groupies at City Hall will raise a stink once they realize there's a Goth vote in this city to pander to?

Not a chance. Never let morality or common sense interfere with the chance to exploit a new political coalition: the first rule of all good democrat appartchiki.

19. This is tragic all the way around....But to ignore the element of this lifestyle is to invite future tragedies. What were these kids doing at an all night party? Who allowed them to go to the rave before the house? Many of these victims were teens!

Parents really need to get into their teenagers lives - or better yet - don't ever let them push you out! Parents need to learn to stand firm and just say "NO" to these raves and drugs and this bizarre behavior in their children.

I hear so many parents claim that their kids threaten to call 911 on them if they don't let them do what they want..... I say - let them call! The police know all about bad kids and their stupid threats to their parents. The cops can tell a true abuse case from a rotten child case. They love to see the look on the kids face when they inform them that their parents CAN spank them, keep them at home and take away their video games! If kids want to hang out with creepy friends...say "NO" period...Do this until they are 18 and you will save them from wasted years of heartbreak and drugs and possibly an early death.

Socialist France doesn't allow parents to spank their children....How's that working for them? Paris is burning!

We have 7 dead kids....

20. Was just browsing The Stranger, and I am just wondering who thought allowing "all age parties" was a good idea in the first place? Sounds like the same liberal BS that treats children like small adults.

Thats just a small part of the broader culture that this tragedy occured in. A friend of mine from college used to live in the Seattle area and she volunteered with a group that tested Ecstacy for these ravers, ostensibly to make sure they were safe. Of course, it never occured to them that the safest thing would be to make sure the partyers didn't take ecstacy in the first place. So right there you have an open admission that drugs are a large part of these raves, yet all-age parties were still considered wise?

21. these things rarely happen overnight; parents ignore signs & don't poke around their kids' rooms; kids learn no discipline for their actions along the way; neighbors don't complain; other parents don't speak up about their kid's friends; then you have an "event;" big wonder; not downplaying the tragedy, but time to re-think our liberal societal trends to remove all parental powers of discipline from the equation;

22. ...and as for guns, like anything, someone will always abuse them; better not use this as a cause to ban them; why? look how fast society & order break down--Katrina, winning sports penants (cars overturned & burning), Seattle Mardi Gras riots, Rodney King-like events; WTO Seattle, some group's "bad" jury verdict; our invaders are not usually foreign solders, but other citizens down the street under societal disintegration and overall mayhem; we need to defend our families & property;

23. Sunday a.m. and ya outta hear the blubber fest on KOMO -- I had to turn it off - it was just soooo 'seattle' >>> but boy they are starting to dig out the details -- hey these were white kids - man that is gonna get a lotta mileage -- but most of all -- the shooter had an ARSENAL -- was a HUNTER and the media ghouls got the smiley older neighbor with the 'they were such nice guys - I just never woulda dreamed' sorta quote -- well brace yourselves -- this crap will be running non-stop for quite a while (unless of course one of the vic's or perp(s) turns out to be connected with one of the local 'FAMILIES') >> wonder how much mileage Greta will get outta this one

24. "Probably just a nutcase at the boiling point - combined with a group of kids who worship the dead....A lethal mix!"

Well, at least Deborah isn't blaming Christine Gregoire and Ron Sims for this one - like she did when that churchgoing McDonalds' franchise owner from E. Washington was hit and killed after stripping naked and standing out in the middle of I-90.

From the story in the Seattle paper today, it sounded like most of the victims had jobs, and were productive members of society.

And as far Deborah's stereotype that all these kids and young adults were "death worshippers," it is noted in today's Seattle Times that one victim, Christopher Williamson, was a Deacon in his church.

27. This shooting happened at my boyfriend's brother's house. They were NOT gothic kids. They were ravers who wear bright colours and love everyone, and hippies. They weren't all strung out on drugs. They invited Aaron Kyle Huff back to the party because they thought he was a nice guy, they are very accepting people.

Don't try to blame the kids, or the rave. they didn't tell this guy to kill everyone.

You don't know these people, you don't know what happened. so get over it.
