Snohomish County Judge Helps Gregoire Keep Campaign Promise

Mrs. Gregoire1 wants you to know that she is keeping her promises.

One of the most important promises of her (nearly successful) campaign to win a convincing majority of legal votes in 2004 was to not raise taxes:

"To go out and tax people at a time when we're just trying to get ourselves out of a recession, to me, is the wrong direction for the state," she said during the state Democratic Party convention in June.
Yet the Democrats in the legislature managed to strongarm the unpopular, feckless Gregoire to sign on to a package of whopping tax increases against her will. But yesterday, a Snohomish County Superior Court judge helped restore Mrs. Gregoire's promise by tossing out many of the new taxes she approved against her will:
A Snohomish County judge ruled Friday the Legislature violated the voter-approved spending limit last year by manipulating the state budget to avoid having voters consider $250 million in tax increases.

Superior Court Judge James Allendoerfer in Everett said voters must have their say if the state wants to continue collecting the increased taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and self-service laundries, among other things.

At least somebody in an official position around here is taking the will of the people into account.

1 This article still cracks me up

King County Elections Director Dean Logan said that the county has addressed the problems that have come up in an honest, transparent way in accordance with state law.

Gregoire said Thursday that she has "every confidence" in Washington's election system.

"I think we have been a model to the rest of the nation and the world at large about how an election system, as close as this one is, can be done with the highest of quality... This is the biggest display of democracy I have ever seen and I am proud of it and I think it's an inspiration."

Yeah, right.

1. Now Superior Court Judge James Allendoerfer in Everett is an individual both of me could vote for. Way to go!

Also a big thanks to Attorney General Rob McKenna, whose office defended the case.

A few seem to get it that the Queen lied like a rug on all her no new tax promises.

2. The fraudulently sitting Queen should heed the warning.

At least someone is trying to quell the inevitable uprising of we the people against this "sinful and tyrannical" Governorship.

She can't be serious...can she? Is she willfully ignoring ANY dissent, or is she surrounded by yes-drones? Is the altitude of the Capitol Building affecting her brain, or what?

4. Apparently the Queen and her court have good meds!

She is living in a fantasy land!

5. Georg Orwell would have had a field day reporting on the blithe refusal of truth as practised by our triumvirate royalty, Chris-Dean-Ron. Hey, we've got the basis for a novel here George. Call it "2004-A Bent Over Electorate".

6. The SayWA SC will overturn this because this judge did not give enough deference to the legislature.

7. I really liked this one!

"The judge made his ruling in part based on e-mails between legislative and budget staff for Gov. Chris Gregoire's administration that laid out a road map for the complicated maneuvers that would allow the limit to be pumped up and avoid a public vote on taxes."

They continually avoid a vote of the very people they claim to support. The only people they support are Public Employees and unions.

The rest of us are dirt under the Queen's feet!

8. gs has it just right. The Queen doesn't care that the taxpayers have voted for a limit. All she care's about is her supporters and how to help them. The rest of us are just her peons to do as she wills.

Wonder how many people are thinking about leaving this state now that the estate tax has been reinstated, the tax limits have been breached and we're all going to help pay for a new Alaska Way viaduct?

9. Not only paying for new Alaska way Viaduct, which we were told was the big emergency reason for that massive gas tax increase, but now they want an additional massive tax to pay for a Cadillac Tunnel instead of a cost effective replacement. 2 Billion was already allocated I do believe.

10. Chalk one up for justice ! As figured, the Gov. was on the oppositions side to this. Hopefully, none of the weasels in Olympia (including the Governor) will appeal it to the "Say WA SC" who have made it habit to trample on the State Constitution. Remember in November that "Justice" Alexander has to go !

11. The Seattle Times has one heck of an article today on the drunken spendhappy sailors in Olympia, looks like they have already spent the entire 1.6 billion surplus in the state and have a 400 million shortfall to boot.

12. What?

Someone knew not to bring a case up for review in Thurston County?

Amazing. I guess after learning that in Thurston County the first amendment and the rest of the US constitution are only recommendations, not laws- someone is learning to get these things heard elsewhere.

13. Careful, Snohomish County judges are also "loose cannons", but maybe not quite as wild as Thurston County. One case does not make a career.

14. This judge actually got it right!!! To bad WA SC doesn't!!

15. I'm beginning to wonder about the initiative process. What's the point of representaive government if they can't do anything without asking? I'm tired of elections where we vote to limit spending in general, and also vote to increase spending on.....you name it, lower class sizes, public transit, higher teacher salaries, etc. We tie the hands of the legislature and then complain that they don't do anything. It would be nice if we could vote consistently at least. If you want lower taxes, stop voting to increase spending. If you want more public services, then vote for higher taxes.

16. I agree with Eric about the initiative process. A few years ago, the people of our state passed an initiative to give teachers a cost of living increase. The legislature then decided our state did not have the money to do that, and did not honor the will of the people and the initiative that they passed.
