Supression of Dissent in Christine Gregoire's Amerikkka

More suppression of dissent in Amerikkka, and this time it's not John Ashcroft's fault.

The Democrat majority in the state House of Representatives is censoring Republican commentary on Mrs. Gregoire's1 budget. The Olympian reports "House orders news releases edited for forbidden phrases"

House Republicans say there are “seven dirty words” you can never say when talking about the Democrats’ budget this year in Olympia ... Republican news releases using the forbidden phrases were removed from Web sites and edited this week by order of the House Chief Clerk’s Office and its legal counsel.

The reason: The words impugned the motives of the other party’s members at taxpayer expense, House Chief Clerk Rich Nafziger said Thursday. “You can’t use taxpayers’ dollars to sling mud.”

(Try telling that to Rep. Geoff Simpson) Rep. Joel Kretz went ahead and issued a press release listing the 7 forbidden phrases:
 “Shell game”
 “. . . lack of honesty with taxpayers . . .”
 “It’s not truthful to say this money is being put into reserve.”
 “Tax-and-spend liberals”
 “. . . lack of truth in the majority’s message. . .”
 “. . . the majority party does not believe . . .”
 “Disingenuous”
Speaking of which, this is a good time to learn more about Mrs. Gregoire's tax-and-spend liberal budget, which proposes $503 million in new spending and disingenuously claims that money is being put into reserve.

1 Keeps promising to "change the culture of state government"

And everyone thought Jimmy Carter was delusional!

4. House Democrats want to “hear no evil.” House Republicans want to “see no evil.” All taxpayers want is for the legislature to “do no evil.”

Posted by: jason on February 24, 2006 11:38 AM
5. Gregoire also said...

"We must reduce bloated management, cut reckless spending and eliminate programs that don't work. The culture change starts today."

Yeah, well Governor Gregoire I was a Democrat when Gary Locke set up the Priorities of Government budgeting model and became a hero. I'm now a Republican because you, Deanron and certain (now) ex-trustees at Skagit Valley College (thank you, Governor Locke) made me one. All the Gregoire Democrats are about is spend, spend and spend - when and what have Gregoire Democrats cut?!?!?

Also helps when on the Republican side you have SoundPolitics.com, Mary Lane, John "King" Carlson, EFF, Janelle Guthrie, Rob "RMK" McKenna, Matt Hasselbeck, Jane Hague, Toby Nixon, Reagan Dunn, Timothy Goddard and Mack Strong (to name a few) all sitting at the cool kids table!

6. I can only shake my head and think, we reap what we sow.

This state keeps handing the car keys to the drunk teenagers, chances are they are going to crash.

I love how when the state's economy is in the tank, the libs blame Bush, but now that they have a billion plus surplus, it must be the state Democrats who did that.

I agree. Let's just say that if you want to raise taxes - and I consider tuition a tax - and any fees beyond 5% (e.g. ferry fares, licensing, etc.), you have to get voter approval.

That'll stop the spendthrift$ cold. You just watch when there's [tenous] Republican control of the House, Senate and Executive that'll put such a constitutional amendment to a vote of the people.

Posted by: A Watchdog on February 24, 2006 11:47 AM
8. Perhaps there is room for compromise here.
Compromise is LEFTIST Lingo for let's keep talkin' until I get my way!

I would propose eliminating all 7 of these expressions and simply substituting 1 word in their place and that word is KLOWNISH!!!!

Posted by: Mr. Cynical on February 24, 2006 11:49 AM
9. Let me see if I understand this:

A group of people who adhere to a liberal philosophy, vote for higher taxes and higher spending cannot be called tax-and-spend liberals in news releases? Okaaaay. How's about: Whining babies who don't like it when the opposition points out the truth? Would that be better?

Here's a hint: If you don't want to be referred to as a tax-and-spend liberal, how's about, oh, I don't know, stop taxing and spending, and amending your philosophy?

And this has little to do with Gregoire. Place this one at the feet of that fine gentleman, without-a-partisan-bone-in-his-body Chief Clerk, Rich Nafziger. And the D legislators who whined about it.

10. Newspeak was designed not to extend but to diminish the range of thought, and this purpose was indirectly assisted by cutting the choice of words down to a minimum.

Interesting how it is the RIGHT that gets accused of Orwellianism but the LEFT actually puts out the memo.

11. The House Chief Nazi is failing to address the issue of why the truth is being censored. The Democrats ARE tax and spend liberals, they are not honest with the taxpayers, and they are no more going to put money in the reserve than put a cow on the moon. It would be really refreshing if once, JUST ONCE, the liberal loonies in Olympia would come up with concrete examples of why the above is not true. I grow so weary of the infantile temper tantrums. Too bad we don't have a "3 whines and you're out of office" rule.

13. Better tax and spend liberals than borrow and spend neocons...

This is just all-around silly. Bottom line: The comments were still published, and so was the fact of the editing. So the Republicans get a twofer.

Conclusion: You're b*tching because its your nature...

14. We were talking about this last night at our PCO meeting. If you want Republicans to win, you have to get the facts out to the voters. Democrats win when there is a lack of credible information. The democrat strategy nowadays is to muddy the water with disinformation and distortions. I'm glad that the Republican party is exposing the left's interest in quelching free, political speech.

I am sure leftists reading this site are going to guffaw at the so-called hypocrisy. Just remember there is only one party of knee-jerk reactions to partial information. The other party always waits a while before forming their opinion so they can gather the facts and base their opinions on sound evidence.

15. I'll post this again here for Possum's benefit (though I doubt she cares about being accurate).

I would not confuse neoconservatism with Big Government Conservatism. Neoconservatism arose in the 70's in opposition to the radical left agenda of the 60's. They were against the massive social programs of the New Deal. Bush does have strong elements of neoconservatism such as interventionist foreign policy, but his spending habits are not one of them.

21. All you have to do is give Democrats rope. This is priceless. The actual issue will scarcely be remembered come November or 2008. But citizens will definitely remember the Governor's suppression of certain phrases, especially in light of the current Muslim cartoon suppression which reinforces the need for dissent.

You've got to hand it to Gregoire, every chance she has had to put her foot in her mouth, she has done so enthusiastically. You can't make this stuff up.

25. I really laughed when I saw the story on the KOMO web site. The last line is priceless!

Majority Leader Lynn Kessler, D-Hoquiam, replied that the GOP has been "extremely political this year."

"It was from the first day, and it hasn't stopped. They are extremely edgy. I've never seen it like this in 14 years," she said.

Gee Lynn, do you suppose that has anything to do with the fact that the GOP is a bit irritated that the person who received the majority of legally cast ballots is not sitting in the Govenor's chair? And every time the GOP tries to point out what Queen Christine is actually doing, as opposed to what she says at her tear-jerker press conferences, they get censored by the oh-so tolerant Democrats!

26. Why do people here vote for those who blatantly don't walk their talk - like the current governor or many of the Democrat State legislators ? They don't just vote for them once, but they do it over and over again - then wonder why this state is in a fiscal mess again, just a few months after the $1.3 billion surplus is announced. It's because the schmucks who can't be trusted keep getting elected.

When are voters going to wise up and pay attention, instead of continually electing these schmucks ? Not saying that republicans are true to their word either, but they are certainly less corrupt than the Dems. They have controlled this state too long and are succeeding to redistribute income as much as they possibly can and run this state into the ground, and there is no end in sight, at least until they get booted out of office ! A balance of power after this November would be in a sense, refreshing.

We're bitchin', 'cause we're......bitchin'. Someone find me a happy liberal.....I mean happy without medication and optimistic about America's future. Every time I see a lib in the news, they are all in a heap. Kinda reminds me of an Imam. Don't any of those guys smile? The only time I've seen any Democrat celebration was when they jumped for joy at defeating an effort to save Social Security. Are the liberal Democrats happiest when American interests are being thwarted?

28. As much as I would love to contribute I feel it would go over the heads of all those in elected office. Not that I think some do not care but because they know it does not matter. For those waiting for free elections ie: Time in November for incum-BENTS to become incumb-WENTS, those days are long gone. The courts have assured the Democrats that the need for fear is past and that is why they have come out of the stupid closet.

There's one for you, nineteen for me
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Should five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don't take it all
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet

Taxman!
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

Don't ask me what I want it for (Aahh Mr. Wilson)
If you don't want to pay some more (Aahh Mr. Heath)
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

Now my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
Cos I'm the taxman, yeah, I'm the taxman

And you're working for no one but me
Taxman!

32. Nothing surprising about that. The same crew got the President of Harvard to quite his job simply because he wondered aloud whether men and women might have physiological differences that give men an advantage at math.

Of course, it did not much matter that plenty of research already shows that there are ample differences between the brains of men and women.

But, the gender feminists have a solution. From now on, the "answer" to all math problems will simply whatever feels right.

So begins the long decline of Harvard as a respected institution of higher learning.

33. I think our little liberal visitors are beginning to see a pattern here (presented only in true "free thinking" blogs like SP)....They are beginning to see that "Big Brother" is and has been (at least for the past 35 years..)a "DEMOCRAT"!

Soon they will begin to question their own arguments and then the horror will set in......

See?...They believed in the bullsh*t that was force fed to them in their youth...their impressionable years... They actually thought the Democrats were for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness....until they began killing babies and the elderly, censoring free thought and speech, taxing everything, producing generations of slaves via the "welfare rolls" and turned their back on the common people in favor of some fantasy of global utopia........Hows that working for you guys?

I honestly thought this thread was a joke until I read about the Democrat call for censorship in the Seattle Times!

Everyone should be extremely concerned and outraged over this! Everyone.

34. The D's are once again proving that they don't understand what "liberal" means. A liberal is supposed to tolerate criticism, not ban it. Their excuse that this is a means to foster polite discourse is just arrogant babble.

By limiting political speech the D's are practicing something they all to willing to accuse the R' of - fascism.

The "Amerikkka" stuff makes you sound like David Horowitz before he drank y'all's KoolAid.

You apparently maintain that any content the legislature declines to promote WITH TAXPAYER DOLLARS constitutes "censorship."

State legislature press releases are funded on the public dime. SS apparently asserts that any speech, no matter how partisan, inflammatory, or unsubstantiated, should be subsidized by our tax dollars.

What if, (to take a page from Bill O'Reily's playbook) a state legislator was a NAMBLA supporter? Should our tax dollars subsidize his press release trumpeting that cause?

40. GS:

You have every right to say whatever you want. You however don't have the right to use the tax payer's money to campaign.

Let's face it, the only reason the GOP is even trying this stuff is because they are deep in debt because of their foolish and wasteful challenge to the election last year.

And, for once, let's be honest, you know if the Dems had tried this crap, Mr. Sharansky and you all would be crying out in horror about how they are stealing from the tax payers. But this board is about scoring political points (or, more and more, keeping the base happy, since almost no one else is reading it), not the truth. Which is nice, since it means that none of you have to be consistent.

41. So The Transporation Secretary should not be able to use his tax payer funded postion to advocate for either side of an initiative? Did he or the Governor falsely portray/belittle/misrepresent the opposition? Take away their mailings and websites for a year or so and watch them squeal.

The Dem's that constantly send out press releases about how they fighting corporate interests "defaming private sector employers" they should be sanctioned right? I believe TWO Democratic Representatives also went astray of the guidelines. While I agree they are both wasteful and foolish, I think they have the right to put it out there in public and remove all doubt about their status

42. JDB,

The GOP is deep in debt? Not hardly.

When Democrats like you lie cheat and steal their brothers and sisters in the media are there to cover it up. The truth doesn't matter because no one holds your feet to the fire.

This board is about scoring points? Right JDB you bet. As you say, "since almost no one else is reading," this board, why do you exert yourself so energetically here? "Obviously there is something that compels you to come here and spend an inordinate amount of your clients time attempting to refute every post with your self conscious arrogance and silly circular pseudo-reasoning.

If almost no one else is reading this, what points do you believe that you win? If we are such bumbling fools, why bother?

Wow, what a champion for your dubious cause. Go Gregoire, get those talk show radios! The funniest part is that you believe that you are accomplishing something useful for your profound religious faith in liberalism.
