Abramoff and our Democrats

Our Senator Patty Murray is high on the list of Senators and Congressmen who received money from groups connected to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff. She is the second highest Democrat, ninth on the list, receiving over $40,000 from out-of-state tribes connected to Abramoff.

The Olympian reports:

The bulk of the money given to the Northwest lawmakers came from four casino-rich tribes concerned about gambling, school construction and other issues, the report said.

The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe in Michigan gave the largest donations to a Northwest lawmaker, with $14,980 going to Murray from 2002 to 2004.

Murray also received $12,000 from the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in California; $9,000 from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians; and $5,000 from the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana, the report said.

The money is a fraction of the overall support Murray has received from Indian tribes since being elected to the Senate in 1992, Glass said. A majority of Murray's tribal contributions have come from Washington state tribes, Glass said.

Murray is a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and a former member of the Senate Interior appropriations subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over funding for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

And she is not sorry. She will keep the money.
The contributions received by Murray were legal under federal election law, and a spokeswoman for the senator said she had no intention of returning the money or donating it to charity, as some lawmakers have done. Murray does not know Abramoff and has never met with him, spokeswoman Alex Glass said.

The list of Northwest lawmakers receiving Abramoff-connected money is long:
"including Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash. ($10,000); and former Rep. George Nethercutt, R-Wash. ($7,000).

A spokeswoman for Cantwell said the senator did not plan to return the money, but declined further comment.

Reps. Jay Inslee, D-Wash. ($5,000); Adam Smith, D-Wash. ($2,000); Peter DeFazio, D-Ore. ($1,500); and Norm Dicks, D-Wash., ($1,500) also received money from Abramoff-connected tribes, as did former Rep. Jennifer Dunn, R-Wash. ($1,500) and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore. ($1,000), the report said."

I keep hearing this is a Republican scandal, but there are a lot of Democrats on that list.

1. As much as you may try, this is a REPUBLICAN scandal, not a Democratic one. Even Newt Gingrich agrees.

$172,933 - Republican
$88,985 - special interest
total: $261,918
That's 229 donations and not a DIME to Democrats.

3. But Ron, didn't you know? It's only okay for Dems to take this money. Not Republicans.

4. ...At least that's the message coming from between the lines that the Dems are communicating here and elsewhere.

5. So, Fred, the money Ron cites is just imaginary or something?

6. Not one dime Fred?

You're right - it was more than one dime.

9. Well, convienently, Ron has focused on just two states worth of politicians. I would like Ron and (un)Sound Politcs to truthfully and honestly publish the ENTIRE list of those who accepted money.

Power, greed, corruption...The Republican Way!

What is that sound? Hmmmmm. sounds like the fat lady is warming up, it is almost over!

Typical Republican tactic. Skew the facts, twist the stats, and lie, lie, lie.

America, what a country.

10. I think it's indicative just how desperate the Rep's are in this situation tbat they try to use it to smear the Dems. It's a little like the Dem's pointing out Henry Hyde's "youthful indescretions" in their attempt to shield Clinton from his peccadillos. In short, both sides were/are in dire straights.

As Fred points out, this is a Republican scandal, and the R's are going to have to convince that "not so bright polity out there" that it's just another MSM attempt to destroy their good name.

I do notice the talk show hosts are hitting it full tilt trying to make the best of it. Their efforts will probably work, as most all have long since concluded that politicians are evil and corrupt, even Dubya.

These are wonderful times to explain to your adolescent children the importance of civic duty and national service. Thank you Bill Clinton, Tom Delay, Dick Cheney, and George Bush. You are all pond scum and now we know it, you know it, and you know we know it.

11. Okay, I need some help here. Dems are saying they did not receive money directly from Abramoff. That is their argument.

Is there a list out there, anywhere, that says exactly what Abramoff directly gave to politicians.

I have heard that groups connected to Abramoff gave all this money to both dems and repubs. I have heard that "the Abramoff team" has given money to both dems and repubs. Does anyone here know what "the Abramoff team" is? This link is where I got most of my information on this scandal and it sure looks like both sides of the aisle are knee deep in doo doo..

12. Nice try, but even Michael Medved admits this is a Republican scandal. There is a difference between getting money as a campaign donation, and influence pedeling. Both Democrats and Republicans got money, but so far, it is only Republicans that apparently accepted bribes.

"For example, Abramoff reportedly used a personal credit card to pay for plane tickets for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), and may also have paid for a golfing trip for Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) that was purportedly sponsored by a nonprofit organization. These payments for junkets for DeLay and Ney were apparent violations of House ethics rules and were apparently not accurately reported in their House ethics filings -- a far cry from the legal, and appropriately reported, campaign contributions news organizations have lumped them in with. As The Christian Science Monitor reported on January 4, "not everyone who ever took Abramoff-related money or perks is guilty of wrongdoing.""

http://mediamatters.org/items/200601040007

As for who Abramoff personally gave money too:

"Here is the list of who Abramoff gave money to, per Michael Petrelis' research:
$172,933 - Republican
$88,985 - special interest
total: $261,918
That's 229 donations and not a DIME to Democrats."

http://americablog.blogspot.com/2006/01/what-was-that-about-abramoff-giving.html

Unless you think all politicians should give back money to lobbyist (something I wouldn't oppose), then you have no basis for your complaint or post.

This is a Republican scandal, and it is only going to get worse before it gets better.

13. Wouldn't it be a good thing if lawmakers were not allowed to receive donations outside their states/districts? After all..they are elected by us to represent us...not some tribe in another part of the country. The temptation is too great to be beholden to these other interests. I'm also starting to rethink term limits.

14. Here's my prediction. Just like everything else we've heard from the Dems since about August of 2004, this will turn out to backfire on them and hurt them far more than it does the Republicans.

The Democrats are a party of losers because they consistently pick the wrong side of key issues. Americans are battle worn for all of the congressional scandals. This is just one more. It's really no big deal. By trying to turn it in to a big deal, the Dems will play out the rope that they will later use to hang themselves.

15. Mr. Abramoff has never given a dollar to any Democratic officeholder; your article made it seem as if Senator Murray had taken his money.

Mr. Abramoff directed some of his clients to make contributions to certain Democrats. He has now admitted to swindling his clients out of millions of dollars. If he had criminal intent in directing their legal donations to Senator Murray, we have no evidence that either his clients or Senator Murray had any knowledge of it. Neither the donors nor Senator Murray should take any blame for Republican crimes, and you should not suggest any equivalence between the massive fraud and corruption to which Mr. Abramoff has admitted, and the legal acts of campaign contribution by his clients. He has swindled them already; you should not now blame the victims of his crimes!

He claims to have incriminating information on sixty (!) Members of Congress, and his plea bargain states that he will get thirty years in jail if he does not please their prosecutors. It's a-gonna be a long, hot Summer for the disappearing Republican majority, many of whom will now regard mere electoral defeat as the least of their problems!

18. cc: Other than Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, care to name just one?

Abramoff was a Republican, all of his contacts (Scanlon et al) were Republicans. The GOP is in charge.

Like the House Bank Scandal, there will probably be one or two Dems mentioned, but the indictements are going to be heavily Red State.

It should be noted that there is no evidence that Sen. Dorgan did anything wrong, but from my reading on this, he is the only Democrat that might get swept up.

My question remains, can you name another?

23. Congressmen Jay Inslee and Norm Dicks got $$$$ from Abramoff. Of course, we know that doesn't count, because they are democrats. It's OK when THEY take this money. and Patty Murray was the hands-down winner in this lottery here in WA. It wasn't even close.

24. ChuckyJ:

Please see my post at 11pm. Or, for that mater, half the posts here. I note that your link only shows what the initial post here said, Murray recieved donations from Clients of Abramoff, not directly from him.

Again, their is a difference between lobbying and bribery. Again, I ask, name a single Democrat other than Sen. Dorgan that has been mentioned related to Abramoff's criminal activities?

However, fine. Let's throw out all polticians that recieved any money from any of Abramoff's clients. It still runs 4-1 GOP.

28. Brief listenings to Tony Snow yesterday revealed that only one R is (in Tony's opinon) in trouble and that is the one who read some garbage into the Congressional Record for Abramoff.

JD Hayworth was on and said he has never been lobbied by Abramoff and has only met him about twice. Any political contributions to him ended in 1999.

JD brought up a good point in that it just makes sense that Indian tribes donate to him since a large portion of Arizona is tribal. (I use the analogy of Boeing giving contributions locally)

So, JD reasons, if the tribes weren't donating to him, he would feel something is wrong because he feels it is responsibility to represent his constituents- the many tribes in Arizona.

Food for thought as we try to understand Murray taking tribe money and JD taking money.

29. JDB, My Left Foot, Fred:

I get it.

If an (R) gets it, its a bribe.

If a (D) gets it, its a contribution.

Getting laundered money from a 3rd party that originally came from a corrupt source is OK? Isn't that what you are trying to nail Delay on?

I guess there is no hypocracy there at all. Whatever.

30. There are two theories on getting liberals to face facts. Neither one works.

You gotta hand it to Murray, though. Once bought she stays bought. You see, what's dirty money for Republicans is freahly-laundered clean for Democrats. Only Democrats can be trusted to take money from special interest groups, and then betray them.

31. If the tribes are Sovereign Nations doesn't it make it an Campaign Finanace violation for them to peddle influence in the Halls of Congress via
cash donations? As individuals certainly, but as a Tribe/Nation?

Posted by: Custer on January 5, 2006 09:35 AM
32. Getting money from foreign governments is illegal. Getting money from citizens is not. I don't know how the tribes fit into this because they are a little of this and a little of that.

Posted by: swatter on January 5, 2006 09:37 AM
33. Swatter:

I would agree that it looks like Hayworth did not do anything wrong.

This scandal is not about getting money from Abramoff. If so, we would lose most of Congress and the President (where is the calls for Bush to give back the over $100K that Abramoff raised for him?). This scandal is about influence pedalling and bribery.

Abramoff is a Republican, his associates and henchmen (Scanlon, Grover Norquist, Ralph Reed), are all Republicans. His ties are Republican, and the Republicans are in power. That is why this scandal will fall heavily on the Republicans.

Again, I'm waiting for one citation or link to a Democrat who acted improperly. I can give you about 20 Republican congressmen, senators and various hanger ons.

But, as I said, if we just want to throw all the bums out that got any money from Abramoff, I'll accept that, starting with the President.

Posted by: JDB on January 5, 2006 09:58 AM
34. As far as I know, Daschle is still a Democrat. What better lobbyist than his bed partner, his wife.

Check it out. This story is a little older now and I don't have the energy to search past records, but there was a lot of influence peddling with this clown. Even worse was the coverup during Clinton of a plane wreck and regs that weren't enforced.

JDB, how about doing the Ginrich recommendation? He is proposing no lobbying in DC. Period.

And finally JDB, as far as I am concerned it is all influence peddling.

When I was a Stater thirty years ago, one district bought me lunch. Later, when I said no to something, the guy came unglued as if a free lunch wasn't a free lunch. And that was only a lousy $8.

Don't you dare tell me that it all isn't a game to rob us little guys of our government.

I have no problem with discussing things like that. However, I'm not quite sure how one can get rid of lobbying with the first admendment. I would be happy though if we change campaign finance laws so that only individules can give donations, get rid of PACs, Corporate, Union and all other group giving. I'm sure we will hear several ideas discussed.

Misty:

PRESIDENT BUSH TOOK OVER $100,000.00!!!

And Murray and the Dems did not get money from Abramoff, but from his clients. Unless you have some evidence of a quid pro quo, it is meaningless.

The problem for the GOP is Tom Delay and his K street project, which set up the GOP for becoming as corrupt in 10 years as the Dems did in 40.

Posted by: JDB on January 5, 2006 11:16 AM
39. Dem Sen. Byron L. Dorgan (N.D.), vice chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, took $67,000 in Abramoff bribe money. Using his influential position on the committee, he was indeed a good "buy" for tribal concerns that Abramoff represented. Any notion by liberals that there is no connection is wishful thinking.

Democrats indeed were porking at this bi-partisan trough:

Free trips in the mid-1990s to the Northern Mariana Islands:

Democrat James E. Clyburn (S.C.), now vice chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, and Democrat Bennie Thompson (Miss.), now the senior Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) Received At Least – $6,250
Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) Received At Least – $6,250

And then there is Hillary Clinton:

Ms Clinton got $2,000 in Abramoff money.
News of Mrs. Clinton's Abramoff connection comes the same day that her 2000 Senate campaign acknowledged it violated Federal Election Commission regulations by hiding hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign cash given by Hollywood mogul Peter Paul.

All this transpires against the backdrop of the Clinton campaign finance scandal of the late 1990s, where millions of dollars of illegal Chinese campaign cash found its way into Democratic Party and Clinton legal defense fund coffers.

The consequences of those transactions dwarf anything expected to emerge from the Abramoff imbroglio.

Posted by: pbj on January 5, 2006 11:36 AM
43. And, PBJ, how many of those Dems got money directly from Abramoff? Oh, that's right, none.

But, surely, if you are upset about that, you are calling on Bush to resign since he actually recived money directly from Abramoff. You are consistent, right?

I'm stealing this, but it puts straight the error you are making PBJ:

"Ask yourself these questions:

1) If Abramoff directed a client to give a donation to a congressman/woman, did the congressman/woman know of the link?
(2) Did the donation affect their behavior? In other words, did they vote on something or do a favor for Abramoff in return for the money?

Accepting donations -- even from Abramoff himself -- isn't necessarily illegal (although it certainly looks bad), is it? It's how the money influences the recipient's behavior that could make it illegal. If you are a Congress Critter and you have worked on behalf of Indian tribes, and they donate to your re-election fund, is that illegal?

Also, as far as I can tell, no Democrats were sharing aides with Abramoff's entities. No spouses or family members of any Democrats were hired by Abramoff's entities. And no shell companies or charities affiliated with any Democrats were used to funnel his money around. Democrats have NO POWER. They are in the minority in both houses of Congress. They would be of NO use to Abramoff.

Following Abramoff's money around is important because it illuminates the scope of potential impropriety, but it does not, in itself, proove impropriety.

47. So the Rs are taking this seriously? Let me know when Doc Hastings starts the Ethics Committee investigation of Bob Ney. Let me know when the House Republican Caucus strips Bob Ney of his committee chairmanship. This investigation has been in the works for over a year and a half and everybody in Washington knew Abramoff was dirty. Why didn't all these Rs give the money back then? Why did they keep taking money from him? Because they are serious? I don't think so.

Guess what, I can cut and paste too. However, I will only paste in people that Abramoff directly gave money too:

Wow, a much longe list, and, what's that, absolutely no Democrats on it.

Trust me, I'll be around when the indictments come down, laughing all the way. And you, you will continue to be wrong. Not really a surprise there.

50. Dad4:

No. Bush is just giving back the money he got directly from Abramoff (see above list), not the money that Abramoff raised for him. Since everyone here is in a hissy fit over Sen. Murray getting $10K from one of Abramoff's client's, I assume they must be in an equal hissy fit about the $100K bush got from Abramoff's fund raising.

51. "That said, I wonder if the gleeful gloaters like biteme/troll/jdb will still be around when the indictments are announced....."

More bs from Chickenshit Soup...it'll be all Republikans indicted

52. Differences between R's and D's:

When D's are in power, they cover up the real scandals where real crimes were committed. The House Banking scandal was FRAUD, pure and simple. The D's tried to cover it up and poo-poo it.

When R's are in power, corruption, even LEGAL corruption, is outed, accused, pilloried, and proclaimed from the rooftops. If the guilty is an R, then it is proclaimed all the louder. Remember Newt Gingrinch? Why isn't he in DC? Oh yeah, he cheated on his sick wife. So the R's threw him out of office. Legal? Yes. Good? No. R's only have one option if they want to keep that R next to their name in the next election: Return the money and apologize, like President Bush and all the others are doing.

Meanwhile, D's are trying to make this look like the R's are corrupt. Yes, there are corrupt R's, and we readily admit this. Unlike the D's, we are trying to get them out of office. Remember that R that was crying at a press conference admitting his guilt? Do you know why? When he was outed, all the R's turned their back on him and told him: "If you want to save even a modicum of honor, you will plead guilty publically and resign, never to return."

That's the difference between R's and D's.

53. JDB:

Well, tell me then. It sure looked like you were in a 'hissy fit' over ANY money that Bush got, now when you're shown that money Abramoff GAVE TO Bush is being 'given back', you want to say 'he's still wrong because Abramoff raised money for him'? Ya hate Bush, ya hate R's, just admit it and move on.

My take on this whole lobbying/corruption issue? It's all wrong. Whether you get money from 'clients', lobbyists, or whoever, it's all wrong. You're supposed to be there (as a member of congress) to represent the people of your state/district, not make money. In that regard ALL 535 members of Congress are wrong. But... we've gone too far in this rationalization/excusing of this behavior to stop it short of something extremely drastic.

54. JDB,

How is Murray's money dirty? Well let's see. She receives indian money from their man Mr Abramoff and, as Gomer Pyle says "Surprise, Surprise":

from Sen Murray's OWN web site:

http://murray.senate.gov/news.cfm?id=189222

"Washington, D.C.) -- Today U.S. Senator Murray (D-WA) announced that next year the Indian Reservation Roads program will receive an increase of about $16 million over last year's funding level.

Last year, the program received a total of approximately $263 million. For fiscal year 2002, the Indian Reservation Roads program will receive a total of about $279 million. The program will receive its fully authorized level of $275 million.

Senator Murray worked to secure the funding in her capacity as Chairman of the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee."

Hmm, let's see. Abramoff send money to Murray and Poof! More money for the Indian Reservation Roads program.

Nope, nothing to see there. Move on. Don't look there.

Posted by: pbj on January 5, 2006 12:57 PM
55. Murray is unabasjed about her corruption, she even goes on to say "I will fight for more funds for Indian Reservation Roads next year as well."

56. I don't care if the guilty person has an R or a D behind his or her name. If they accepted illegal contributions, they deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. This goes beyond party loyalty, and anyone who thinks one party is clean and the other as pure as the driven snow is a slack-jawed brainwashed idiot, and part of the problem that currently plagues American politics.

I suggest that the kneejerk 'victory at all costs' party hacks on both sides of the aisle pull their heads out of their asses. The culture of corruption is not exclusive to one party, and it you think it is, you are clearly among the dumbest, most gullible wastes of education in the western hemisphere.

58. JDB is right. Let's open a full Congressional investigation into ALL lobbyists and see how their "investments" in our congressmen pay off.

How about we open up investigations into all the donations by the tribes and see what their money bought?

Instead of listing those that received direct donations, how about you show us your list of "20 or more Republicans" that illegally received donations?

By JOSH GERSTEIN - Staff Reporter of the Sun
January 5, 2006

"A fund-raising committee for Senator Clinton's 2000 campaign has agreed to pay a $35,000 civil penalty and to concede that reports it made to the federal government understated by more than $700,000 donations to a California celebrity gala held to benefit her Senate bid."

59. Question: How do you turn $10,000 into $16 million?

Ans: Either one of Hillaries miraculouis futures trade, or you send it off to Patty Murray and end up with an extra $16 million for the Indian Reservation Roads program.

60. Dad4:

I do not think that Mr. Bush* was corrupted by the over $100,000.00 that Abramoff raised for him, but my point is that if people like PBJ and soup for brains are all up in arms about the small amount that Sen. Murray received from tribes that were client of Abramoff, surely they would be up in arms about Mr. Bush*.

Of course, hypocrits that they are, they are not.

PBJ:

All right, you are now just trying to be wrong. Thanks for the laugh.

Let's check the record..., Well, the link you sent is for a December 4, 2001 press release. The link given by ChuckyJ above, http://www.capitaleye.org/abramoff_recips.asp?sort=N shows that Murray did not receive any funds until 2002. Oops, you took your best shot and it blew up in your face. You should be in the GOP leadership...., You are not Chris Vance are you?

Note from the list above, no money was given to Murray from Abramoff. Do you have any proof that money was given from a tribe to secure her vote? That is the difference between legal contributions and a bribe (See Swatter's post above concerning JD Hayworth).

You have to love that apparently the defense of the Republican Kool-aid drinkers comes down to "The Democrats are just as bad as us, look, some of them did things that are nearly as sleazy!"

* Of the two candidates for United States President in 2000 Mr. Bush received by far the fewest, and most studies have shown that a complete count of the vote would have made him the loser. Further, in 2004, there is more proof of GOP vote fraud in Ohio than has ever been posted on this site related to Gov. Gregoire's victory, which was up held by a GOP selected judge in a GOP county.

61. I love how partisan people try to paint corruption as belonging to one group or another. Sorry, corruption knows no boundaries. Power attracts the corruptible. Democrat or Republican, no matter-- if they broke the law, nail them.

Pelosi's comment of the other night is the most ridiculous statement I've heard in a long time. The false shock expressed-- that there is CORRUPTION IN CONGRESS (Oh my Lord!)-- what a joke!

Posted by: Kyle on January 5, 2006 02:39 PM
62. Another interesting fact when you look at the complete list of People and PACs that recieved money from Abramoff, his firm or his clients (link originally posted by ChuckyJ):

http://www.capitaleye.org/abramoff_recips.asp?sort=N

A quick look through reveals there are approximately 85 more Republicans on the list than Democrats. Strange how that happened.

Posted by: JDB on January 5, 2006 02:45 PM
63. JDB, you brought up a good point. Gore got more votes than Bush and Bush won.

I love the electoral college. It prevents big cities from dominating. And, if the game were who gets the most votes, would Bush have written off California and New York? Wouldn't a few bucks campaigning there have reaped a few more votes? Instead, he played by the rules and won election with the electoral college.

JDB, on Sean Hannity this afternoon there was a small discussion with the Newtster. Newt thinks if R leadership huddled and just changed and didn't try to rationalize this mess (Ds could take a few lessons here) they could come out on top.

But it would take Delay and Ney stepping down.

Newt thinks that doing anything else would mean lost primaries and generals for the Rs.

Hillary should take the same approach for her corrupted Senatorial campaign she just settled.

64. JDB:

Like I said before, doesn't matter who does it, it's wrong. You got to look on your side first before you go pointing fingers at the other side. Bottom line is: doesn't matter if one side had more people involved than the other, all of them are wrong.

Those who are getting rid of the money, simply because 'it looks wrong', are doing the right thing, because too often in this society perception is reality. Patty Murray doesn't care if 'it looks wrong'. She is taking a big chance on making herself look a lot worse than she really is (and that takes work!). All anyone has to do is take the high ground and remove all perception of impropriety. Is that too hard?

Posted by: dad4 on January 5, 2006 03:26 PM
65. JDB,

So she gets paid off after delivering the goods. Do you pay your auto mechanic before or after he fixes your car? there is no requirement that in order to be a quid pro quo that the politician must receive the money first.

ANd is you are using DIRECT contributions as a measure of indictment, then looking at the list at http://www.capitaleye.org/abramoff_recips.asp?sort=N,

We can see that indeed there are Democrats who received money directly from Abramoff:

Joe Baca (D-Calif) $500

Really? Name one. Wasn't the one conducted by the Miami Herald. Wasn't the one conducted by the New York Times. Name one, or shut up about it.

I cannot believe people like you are STILL bitching about the 2000 election, and then claiming fraud in Ohio in 2004. Ever think your ideas sucked, or your candidate sucked? Could that possibly be the reason? Of course not. That would entail facing facts outside of your fevered swamp.

Florida was called for Gore before the polls closed in the panhandle. Florida was called for Gore before three other time zones closed their polls. At no time - NONE - did Gore lead in Florida after the polls closed. Not in the original count. Not in the machine count. So stop with the comparisons to the WA gov's race in 2004, where Rossi lead after the original count AND the machine recount.

And in case you forgot, if your candidate would've won his own freaking state of Tennessee, you could be blaming somebody else for everything wrong with the world.

And as I said to you before, I'll trade you your conspiracy theories about the 100,000 more votes Bush got in a solid GOP state in 2004 if you'll give me the 10,000 or so the Ds in Wisconsin are going to jail over. You lost for gawd's sake. Stop the effin whining.

Now, to the subject at hand - everybody's tainted with the money. Both R and D. I won't defend them, no matter the party. Throw the book at 'em. Don't care. You, on the other hand, cannot get through your partisan rage to see anything other than eeeeeevil Republicans behind every deed. As if your sorry sack of congressional members are so freaking pure.

You are a fool, and no longer worth the time nor the effort. You can't be convinced of anything outside of your own, smug, ignorant world. Go back to your echo chambers and feel good about yourself.

If you had actually read this thread, you would have figure that one out yourself. Thanks for playing, but maybe you want to think next time and see if your arguement has already been shot down, or if you are just plain wrong before you post.

Amused:
Ah, still unable to actually post anything on point or something that is not a personal attack. It must be nice to live in a world where facts do not matter.

I know, I know, I shouldn't try sarcasm here, but I knew someone would fall for my mocking. I will note that I have never argued the Ohio conspiracy theory, and think it is bull, just as I'm sure that Mr. Sharansky thinks his whole screed against Gregoire is Bull, but it does get the other sides dander up, and it makes for good copy, so why not go for it. Personally, you seem smarter in your post than to fall for it (I expected soup for brains or Amused by being unable to come up with a Fact to go off on it), but heck, when your subjects leave facts behind, mockery becomes easy.

BIG MEDIA FLORIDA RECOUNT: GORE TOPPED BUSH IF ALL UNDER/OVER VOTES COUNTED; LEGAL STRATEGY DESTROYED CHANCES

**World Exclusive**
**Must Credit DRUDGE REPORT**

A vote-by-vote review of untallied ballots in the 2000 Florida presidential election commissioned by the nation's main media outlets shows Al Gore edged ahead of George W. Bush "under all the scenarios for counting all undervotes and overvotes statewide," the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

APCNNNYTWASHPOSTLATIMESNEWSDAYCHICAGOTRIB will splash in Monday editions an election review which will ignite total controversy during a time of war, publishing sources told DRUDGE on Sunday.

MORE

Bush would have narrowly prevailed in the partial recounts sought by Gore, but Gore could have "reversed the outcome -- by the smallest of margins -- had he pursued and gained a complete statewide recount," according to one interpretation of the database compiled by the monstermedia consortium. [Each media outlet will produce a news analysis based on the database product.]

Under any standard that counted all disputed votes in Florida, Gore erased Bush's advantage and emerged with a tiny lead that ranged from 42 to 171 votes. "

Heck, if Drudge said it, it must be right. Guess I won't be shutting up. Now can you find a single study that says a full recound (both under and over votes), would lead to a Bush win? I thought not.

Sheesh, what is that I posted in reply to Swatter yesterday:

"I would agree that it looks like Hayworth did not do anything wrong.

That is why this scandal will fall heavily on the Republicans."

Wow, if you had read the thread, you would have saved yourself from looking like a fool.

I am sure there will be a Democrat involved for about every 10 Republicans..., but this is not a bipartisan thing.

To quote swatter:

"Newt thinks if R leadership huddled and just changed and didn't try to rationalize this mess (Ds could take a few lessons here) they could come out on top.

But it would take Delay and Ney stepping down.

Newt thinks that doing anything else would mean lost primaries and generals for the Rs."

The argument of "my party did it less than your party" is silly, and glosses over the real issue, which is the culture of backroom dealing and cronyism that characterises the leadership of both parties. You cannot tell me that the millions of dollars given to Democrats in this state by the labor unions, trial lawyers and tribes does not "pay" for favorable legislation. It all stinks. Just because Abramoff is being indicted and everyone is trying to follow the money trail doesn't make donation A a good one and donation B a bad one.

Oooohh, that donation came through a cliiiieeennnttt of Abramoff, so it must be okay. My team is better than your team. Whatever. The Dems who are trying to claim the high ground here are fools, or blind partisans, or both.

If government finds it necessary to meddle in everyone's business, why shouldn't people be allowed to influence government? The law is the law, and whoever breaks the law should be investigated and punished if found guilty, but its pretty naive to think that people (individuals, organizations, or corporations) shouldn't be able to shape legistlation that suits their interest. Its not like our government officials are some mystical guru's sitting on top of a mountain that can make pure, objective choices....

90. I like how the article had to add the "school construction" part right after gambling...Just in case anyone is concerned about her getting money about gambling, rest assured it was more for school construction!!

91. Folks.

Contact your senators and reps and DEMAND they release the Barrett report in FULL with NO redactions.

93. What, so you have no representation? Smart move...

94. All I see here is fingerpointing, half-truths, and ommissions used for the purpose party posturing.

The real issue is why this happened and what are the solutions in preventing from happening again.

Legislation is needed in preventing this now institutionized method of lobbying on behalf of special interests. That is what this scandal should represent.

History has shown both parties equally responsible and both parties are responsible for coming up with solutions.

95. "Legislation is needed in preventing this now institutionized (sic) method of lobbying on behalf of special interests."

Congress now has its hands in every aspect of American life. As such, anyone & everyone with a bone to pick, an axe to grind, or an interest to advocate is going to seek them out in an effort to influence them.

The best way to limit "scandals" of this sort? Limit the government and its control over our lives.

Mark my words - there will be (totally knee-jerk and completely symbolic) legislation coming out of this. It will be very limited, and it won't change anything.

I do see your point about history, but what are you going to do when you have an institution that requires that it's members become prostitutes, and then tries to destroy them when they're caught turning tricks?

96. You raise very good points that are worth further discussion because they may lead to solutions.

The first step would be to reduce the size of a $2.6 trillion budget.

You know we have a real problem when the party that was once the party of small government is now predominately responsible for increasing the size of the federal government to astronomical limits through borrow and spend policy. With the other party alternative of tax and spend policy.

Not sure what the solution is accept to keeping 'banging this drum'

97. One partial solution to the ABRAMOFF Scandal is to raise the issue of Constitutional Amendment to balance the federal budget (with caveats for times of war).

At least this would politically force our Congressman and President to look closer at budget priorities, thereby placing greater accountability on how money is spent within those restricted spending limited.

It may also engage more of the general public to get involved with their govt.

The way it is now, people do not fully understand the ramifications of undiscipled spending and the huge federal deficit.

98. Fencing,

At this point, you have no idea any more than any of the rest of us, what this scandal should represent let alone what it is really about. Abramoff is guilty of something, so what? You jump to rash conclusions based on an entirely false agenda.

You say, ”Legislation is needed in preventing this now institutionized [sic] method of lobbying on behalf of special interests.” Good luck (but not really). The day anyone ever prevents institutionalized special interests from having influence on our political systems is the day we completely lose our rights as citizens and radically change our established form of government. Rights not protected by the constitution are interests offered for the taking through political clout. ALL INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS ARE INSTITUTIONALIZED SPECIAL INTERESTS, and all legislative initiatives are obtained through the representative power of majorities.

As an “independent” you have voluntarily isolated yourself from the political process and any potential political clout associated with procedural democracy-majority power. I hope that the superior feeeeeling it gives you to pretend that you are above the fray is worth being less powerful than the worst ideologue in either real political party. Realistically, that is ALL that you will get from being an “independent.”

Why anyone would be proud of depriving themselves of fundamental rights is beyond me.

99. JDB,
3 days & 23 posts later and still no response. What's the matter, the truth hurt?

100. We all recall how the Democrats stole the governor's mansion from Dino Rossi, but have we already forgotted the names of the culprits? David McDonald, chief legal counsel for the state Democratic Party, was one of the people calling the shots in the case. Mcdonald is a senior partner at Preston Gates and Ellis and member of the Democratic National Committee. How many meetings did Mcdonald have with Abramoff? Any memos? How much money did Mcdonald secure for Murray and Cantwell? Other candidates? Anyone who thinks that the Democrats aren't involved with Abramoff is dreaming.

101. Follow the Money,

Right you are. It is amazing to see the number of people jumping to conclusions (esp., usually sensible conservative types) and making rash assumptions based on superficial reports and raw numbers alone. The raw numbers are highly questionable at this time, and this scandal is far from revealed. It will amount to something . . . but much less than seems imminent today.

None of us (especially trolls like desparate JDB) know what this is really about yet.

You say, "Anyone who thinks that the Democrats aren't involved with Abramoff is dreaming." Absolutely true. Liberals are praying (secretly to god, but not saying his name) for anything to save themselves from themselves. Very amusing indeed.

102. The Republican party needs to have someone substantial run against Senator Murray. She is not only much more politically vulnerable at this point, she is an embarassment to Washington State. When Senator McCain blew the whistle on that tanker deal Senator Murray tried to set up for Boeing, she was unashamed. She has been trading on her "mom with tennis shoes" act for so long, no one wants to call bullshit on her.
I think if Mike McGavick loses to Senator Cantwell this fall, he should run against Murray. Or certainly Dino Rossi could probably do the job. But guys, don't make the same dumb ass mistake (former KOMO news anchor) Rod Chandler did and try to "diss" her for being the "mom in tennis shoes." Focus on the pork, focus on the corruption. True enough, Murray would try to make it a case of "clean Democrats" against "dirty Republicans." In a debate, at that juncture, it might be time to resurrect that line used in the Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954, "At long last, have you no decency?"
We need to get rid of Murray from the U.S. Senate and put a capable, intelligent person in there.

103. Terry, you had a chance a year and a half ago. Now you have to wait another 5 years. Why not help stick it to Cantwell this year?
