Another Justice Johnson?

Washington state Senator Stephen Johnson (R-Kent) has announced he will not seek re-election in 2006 and is contemplating a run for the state Supreme Court. If elected, he would become the third Johnson on the state's high court.

Associate Chief Justice Charles W. Johnson Associate Justice James M. Johnson Possible Future Justice Stephen L. Johnson
Sen. Johnson has been one of our best Senators and if he chooses to run for Justice I would expect to support him. He has pledged not to run against his friend Chief Justice Gerry Alexander. Not clear yet whether he would challenge Justice Susan Owens or Justice Tom Chambers. I would personally be most interested in seeing strong challengers against both Alexander and Owens, two of the most consistently statist liberals on the bench. Chambers, in my recollection, has on notable occasions dissented from some of the Alexander court's most embarrassing decisions (e.g. Hangartner, Yousoufian, Sane Transit).

1. Our State Supreme Court is going to look like the cast playing the townsfolk in Blazing Saddles with everyone's name being Johnson. Now all we need to find is a Howard Johnson, Reverend Johnson, Olson Johnson and Anal Johnson...he likes to keep his bar nice and clean.

3. I don't always agree with Chambers, but I like what I've read of his opinions. He always seems to base his decisions on a reasonable interpretation of the law rather than on what he'd like the law to be, and I can respect that even when I happen to think he's wrong. I'd be sad to see him replaced, even by someone like Sen. Johnson.

4. Hmmmm. The 9th circuit court is a bunch of johnsons. Maybe we should call them "Bruce" to avoid confusion...

5. Nathan is spot on in his assessment of Chambers. Of the three up for re-election next year, Owens is by far the worst. She is a complete hack for the left. Alexander has a disturbing tendency to decide cases on the basis of what he thinks is "fair," but he is persuadable at times and he is respected by everyone on the Court -- an important point in light of the rather strong personalities that populate that body.

6. We really need to untie together next year and work on the state's courts. Senator Johnson sounds like he would be SSSSSOOOOO much better than anyone he might run against next year.

7. If I remember right, he specializes in estate and trusts. Would be interesting to see his stance in the current "it's all gov. property" issue (CAO and these laughable but tragic domain disputes)
