Disband City Of Seattle's Office Of Civil rights

The City of Seattle's Office Of Civil Rights fosters awareness of discrimination and administers the mayor's Race and Social Justice Initiative. With that mission, plus 22 employees and an annual budget of $1.8 million, you might suppose that out of the 200-plus discrimination complaints filed with the office last year, somewhat more than 1 percent were found valid. You'd be wrong, as The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports today.

The money would be far better spent to put more police on the streets or address the city's perpetual parks maintenance backlog. If Seattle is really worried about social justice, I suggest residents turn their attention and personal energies to China. Our city's civil rights office represents the institutionalization of what has been termed "punitive liberalism."

1. Matt,

That's an interesting point about China. I stil haven't figured out what they want with Tibet. Does anyone know why the Chinese want to continute to occupy that land?

2. I want separation of church and state!!!

I do not want state sponsored churches such as the Church of the Perpetually Offended.

3. I wonder what the ethnic/racial/gender/sexual orientation/political makeup of the 22 employees is. My guess is that they are probably a little short on white male conservatives.

4. Huey,

They apparently have a job opening, so go for it! :-)

5. Libertarian: Wikipedia says that Chinese rule of Tibet is "motivated solely by the natural resources and strategic value of Tibet." The article does not describe what those resources are, nor does it say what strategic needs are satisfied. Wikipedia does not really answer your question.

South County: You are a wicked man. Fall on your knees!

Huey: What use could white men possibly serve in the Church of the Perpetually Offended? You might want to verify your assertion, tho'

6. A complete and total waste of tax dollars. More liberal madness. Yes, close the office and hire more police.

7. Hey, Huck,

Thanks for the info on Tibet. Looks like the Chinese are just being jerks about Tibet. I suppose they're occupying the country just in case they decide to invade India. That would be a mistake.

8. The title "Office of Civil Rights" is a JOKE. I tried filing a civil rights complaint against my former boss while working for the city and was told that the complaint was not valid because he was black and I am not. Apparently, they only investigate complaints when a black person is filing against a white. This whole department is a waste of taxpayers money. I guess this proves that racism is no longer a problem within the City of Seattle.

9. You can read about it in the Seattle Times of 6-15-05 about where the money went for law enforcement in King County. Dave Reichert was accused by his own party of encouraging drugs and gang activity because he wanted to continue a Federal program that put more cops on the street. Go Figure!!?? But I guess I'm asking the wrong people to do that!

10. Fog - you must think as Dems have situational ethics, do not assume everyone has. Prosecute everyone, the letter behind the name is not relavent. If that has been proved throw him away for life.

Well said, SoCo, will said.
I'm also weary of the Church of the Pinheaded CLOWNS. The Right Reverend Yucko is probably on Seattle's payroll worked tirelessly to cultivate more and more "CLIENTS" to feign offense and file complaints.
See www.yuckotheclown.com
The image of Yucko the CLOWN ought to be the first thing that comes to our minds when we think about leadership (????) in Washington State, KingCo, Seattle and the Freemount District!

12. If you've ever had the displeasure of hearing any one of these goons speak, you'd be reassured your tax money is being wasted. Appearance over substance, the way of the Liberal.

13. Hey, my civil rights are violated yearly in Seattle.
Some moon bat in a mailbox keeps cancelling out my vote.
Think they will investigate?

14. Where was the Office of Civil Rights to investigate the Pioneer Square murder and riots on Mardi Gras 2001? Anyone who was there knows the murder was a hate crime, that the murderers were yelling racial epithets as they beat that young man to death. I guess that particular crime didn't fit the 'pattern' of hate crime for which the Office of Civil Rights investigates.

I wonder why?

15. Maybe a good sign. The perpetually offended have a hard time showing real discrimination. Even to an office in LLL Seattle with the sole purpose of looking for discrimination.

If someone looking for cases of discrimination can't find much. May I suggest dear reader that discrimination is no longer a real problem in our society.

So if discrimination is hard to come by, I think we can spend 1.8 mil elsewhere.

16. From the mind of the Director of the Office for Civil Rights.

... and this ought to be some fun reading...

However, it occurs to me that this is all inside the City of Seattle, so it is not really my problem. I have to worry about these jokers. I wonder if there is any difference in their operation from the one down the street?

Why in the hell do we pay for this stuff twice? King County government is Seattle government, and vice versa. Talk about double jeopardy!

18. Come on JCM, the fact that discrimination is so hard to come by just shows what an awesome job they are doing. Who would dare think about discriminating, never mind actually doing it with these 22 wonderful government employees guarding our rights!

19. fred,

Reminds me of a story from when we lived in Iran.

The protagonist in many apocryphal morality tales was a fellow named Mullah Nasserdin.

One day Mullah Nasserdin was throwing bread crumbs around his house. A neighbor asked, "Mullah, what are you doing?"
"Why I am keeping the tigers away." replied Nasserdin
Astonished the neighbor responded. "but there are no tigers here!"
"See! It works." the Mullah proclaimed.

21. JCM - Iran/Seattle. Bit too close for comfort, both run by intolarant fanatics.

22. Anyone who thinks multiculturalism is wonderful needs to read the recent "Weekly Standard" article of Britain's effort to create this panacea over the decades. The net result? Fanatical pockets that want to take down the country.

The answer: Assimilation.

23. Just more boondoggle money to buy votes.

Posted by: BananaLand(aka Iguana) on December 13, 2005 07:49 PM
24. Speaking of Boondoggles, Anybody watching what "Salmon Recovery" is costing us at the City, County and State levels? Not ot mention Federal. The director of our local King county watershed (one of three in King County) makes $90,000 + a year, has a staff of 5 and we meet
6 times a year. The funding for the program just doubled (all of you KC residents now pay $10.00 per parcel per year up from $5.00). This is on top of Federal and State programs.

Now didn't King County just hold a summit that said Global Warming was going to destroy our fish runs? Which is it? Fish recovery or poached fish?
