The City of Seattle's Office Of Civil Rights fosters awareness of discrimination and administers the mayor's Race and Social Justice Initiative. With that mission, plus 22 employees and an annual budget of $1.8 million, you might suppose that out of the 200-plus discrimination complaints filed with the office last year, somewhat more than 1 percent were found valid. You'd be wrong, as The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports today.
The money would be far better spent to put more police on the streets or address the city's perpetual parks maintenance backlog. If Seattle is really worried about social justice, I suggest residents turn their attention and personal energies to China. Our city's civil rights office represents the institutionalization of what has been termed "punitive liberalism."
Posted by Matt Rosenberg at December 13, 2005 07:41 AM | Email ThisThat's an interesting point about China. I stil haven't figured out what they want with Tibet. Does anyone know why the Chinese want to continute to occupy that land?

I do not want state sponsored churches such as the Church of the Perpetually Offended.
They apparently have a job opening, so go for it! :-)

Huey: What use could white men possibly serve in the Church of the Perpetually Offended? You might want to verify your assertion, tho'
Posted by: huckleberry on December 13, 2005 08:42 AMThanks for the info on Tibet. Looks like the Chinese are just being jerks about Tibet. I suppose they're occupying the country just in case they decide to invade India. That would be a mistake.
Posted by: Libertarian on December 13, 2005 08:54 AMWell said, SoCo, will said.
I'm also weary of the Church of the Pinheaded CLOWNS. The Right Reverend Yucko is probably on Seattle's payroll worked tirelessly to cultivate more and more "CLIENTS" to feign offense and file complaints.
See www.yuckotheclown.com
The image of Yucko the CLOWN ought to be the first thing that comes to our minds when we think about leadership (????) in Washington State, KingCo, Seattle and the Freemount District!
I wonder why?
Posted by: Larry on December 13, 2005 11:24 AMIf someone looking for cases of discrimination can't find much. May I suggest dear reader that discrimination is no longer a real problem in our society.
So if discrimination is hard to come by, I think we can spend 1.8 mil elsewhere.
Posted by: JCM on December 13, 2005 11:28 AM... and this ought to be some fun reading...
However, it occurs to me that this is all inside the City of Seattle, so it is not really my problem. I have to worry about these jokers. I wonder if there is any difference in their operation from the one down the street?
Why in the hell do we pay for this stuff twice? King County government is Seattle government, and vice versa. Talk about double jeopardy!
Posted by: huckleberry on December 13, 2005 11:55 AMReminds me of a story from when we lived in Iran.
The protagonist in many apocryphal morality tales was a fellow named Mullah Nasserdin.
One day Mullah Nasserdin was throwing bread crumbs around his house. A neighbor asked, "Mullah, what are you doing?"
"Why I am keeping the tigers away." replied Nasserdin
Astonished the neighbor responded. "but there are no tigers here!"
"See! It works." the Mullah proclaimed.
The answer: Assimilation.
