State Dem Chief Stepping Down

Washington state Democratic Party Chairman Paul Berendt is going to MoveOn. I'm sure it's not because he disgraced himself by trying to lay blame for the plight of Hurricane Katrina's New Orleans victims at the feet of supposed Republican racists. Or because he once referred to Eastern Washington grassroots Republican volunteers as "gun nuts and religious nuts." No, he's gettin' out while the gettin's good. Think about it. Not only did he helped engineer Christine Gregoire's theft of the governorship from Dino Rossi; his party has also taken control of both chambers of the state legislature, and both our state's U.S. Senate seats. Yes: Washington Republicans certainly have some work to do. I'd like to see more ideas energizing more GOP campaigns in this state; more charismatic, solution-focused candidates like Rossi; and less abject reliance on the tired old consultants' tools of fuzzy messaging, direct mail and TV ads. But regardless, it can only go downhill from here for state Democrats, especially in '08: when Rossi will topple Gregoire. Again - and by a cheat-proof margin this time.

Berendt has worked in politics for years; now he says he'll either get a job in government or the private sector. I think the latter would be more personally enriching for him. He should start his own business, maybe a lobbying firm. Careful of those disclosure forms though, Paul!

2. OK, let's help Paul with his potential Job choices in this state based on the democrats wonderful economics of taxation:

Owner of Mailbox's FR' Us

Janitor at KCE (never know what you will find laying around)

3. If Berendt were to run a private firm with the same level of honesty he employs in politics, I'd give him about nine months before the jailhouse door clicked shut behind him.

But not to worry. There are so many Democrats in power in Washington that he'll have a lovely title, and perks, and benefits, and lush salary (hey, and why not hot and cold running secretaries?) at the time and place of his choosing. And all at our expense.

Not the most inspiring news during the Christmas season.

4. Says volumes about the direction of the dems. Long gone are the days of the loyal opposition of Scoop, Maggie, and Moynihan.

5. Hey, Paul was very good at what he did, and I don't begrudge him that. As Matt notes, even the timing of his exit is an indication of political skill.

Were I a Democrat, I'd be doing everything I could to get him to replace Howard Dean at the top of the party.

At any rate, here's to hoping the next head WA Dem is significantly less effective.

6. Where's your evidence that Paul is going to moveon?

7. Oh, I get it. It was your little joke. Well, you got me. Anyway, I appreciate Tim Goddard's comments.

8. As a new convert to being a democrap, I never had the "pleasure" of meeting paul....pity, I'm sure he could have provided invaluable insights into political corruption...

(so little itme, so much to (un)learn)

11. I'm sure it had *nothing* to do with Berendt slamming an ex-Senator which had Sens. Murray and Cantwell none-too-pleased about setting the time-honored precedent of slamming Senators that are turned out of office :)

12. Smart guy not to wanna hang around till Gregoire gets her head handed to her in '08 and the truth of what really happened in '04 is brought back to mind for WA folks.

13. I can respect someone doing a good job, but Berendt is one sick puppy. His timing is interesting. Dems at the top in Washington with no place to go but down...and even one real investigation into KC elections brings down the whole house of cards. Is this a gracous stepping down, or a rat fleeing the ship before the storm? Does this mean an investigation may be on the way...dare we hope?

14. What it probably means is a cush payback job (over 100k) in the State of Gregoire, Wa. She has a 1.6 billion surplus that is burning a hole in her pocket, and her buds are sure to get paid back.

15. I'm so sad...
I'm so overcome by sorrow that I feel like calling press conference so I can bawl my eyes out on cue in front of the cameras.

On a different note, I'm surprised some of the regulars here haven't suggested that Berendt take State GOP chair Chris Vance with him judging how poor Chris seems to have alienated almost every member of the party from Far Right to Moderate.

A bit of inspiration here, maybe Berendt and Vance can move into a flat on First Hill, get some television producers to rig the place with cameras and start a reality TV show a la "Odd Couple".

16. Dwight Pelz is looking for a job....that's the only reason Berendt is being kicked out...oops - umm..I mean "retiring"....

The Democrats eat their own...Let's hope they have a hefty appetite!

17. Bawling on Cue Pauly is so full of himself that he probably things he'll land some Soap Opera gig! Never trust anyone like Berendt who cries and struggles for Public Education, while sending his 2 kids to a PRIVATE CATHOLIC SCHOOL IN OLYMPIA!!
Berendt gives CLOWNS a bad name!

18. >>Or because he (Paul Berendt) once referred to Eastern Washington grassroots Republican volunteers as "gun nuts and religious nuts."

Hold on here, I am a gun nut and a religious nut and I don't even live in Eastern Washington.

19. Times has story says his wife is some big state official. go figure.

Posted by: righton on December 8, 2005 06:57 PM
20. righton---
Berendt's wife is fully at the guv'mint TROUGH!!!
That's how Berendt can afford to send his 2 kids to a PRIVATE CATHOLIC SCHOOL in Olympia.
Berendt is quite a hypocrite.
Praise the Public Schools....but take $5000 x 2 right OUT of the Olympia Public Schools by sending his kids to Private Catholic School thanks to his wifes guv'mint job!!!
You gotta hand it to Pauly!!

21. Matt,

I agree we need more charismatic candidates.
So based on that statement your going to try
and convince me that McGavick fits that bill?
Come on he changes positions as often as a 3
year old changes his mind.

22. While we are saying goodbye to Paul, let's not forget what he said last December after the second recount.

That's right, Paul Berendt said God put Christine Gregoire in office. And he stuck to it when challenged. My mind is still boggled by that.
