In these Times

Today's Seattle Times includes me in a photograph of the canvassing board
The caption implies that the canvassing board is examining ballots from the challenged mail box voters. In fact, the picture was taken before the ruling on the challenges, when the canvassing board was examining absentee ballots with illegible postmarks in order to determine whether the ballots were cast on time. Here's a photo I took of that activity from a different angle.

I don't envy the members of the canvassing board for inheriting the miserable duty of inspecting hundreds of envelopes with a magnifying glass in order to decide on the basis of incomplete information whether the ballots are qualified to be counted. But it is just another aspect of mail voting that should convince the reasonable person that mail voting will never be sufficiently accurate to render a legitimate decision in a close election.

1. Stefan,

Of course a reasonable person can see the problems. That's why Logan and KCE will never make the change...they aren't anywhere near the neighborhood of reasonable.

2. I'm still wondering how they can accept a ballot that is postmarked after the election just because the voter scribbled an earlier date next to their signature. What does the law say about the date scenerio? How wide spread was Dean and Dow's ignoring of the postmarked date?

Posted by: GS on November 29, 2005 01:26 PM
3. You can tell by Dean's cheeks that he is just about to propose another flawed ruling by the canvassing board. He looks like a boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Sims really ought to hire a more convincing liar for that job.

4. If the election results have been certified, what is the point of this? Was there anything on the ballot that was close enough that the number of ballots with bad postmarks could make a difference, or is this just a charade for the cameras to show how hard they work and that every vote should count.

Tax dollars well spent!

5. How many ballots were victim of the blurred postmark?

Shouldn't the post office be required to make sure mail ballots never leave the facility without a readable postmark?

6. Well, I don't disagree with your thesis, but I think we lost the war on poll voting versus mail-ins.

7. Dow appears to use extra-heavy starch for his crisp white shirt. Impressive. Kind of gives the impression that he has a f*cking clue about what he is doing. Too bad his failure to recognize that no one lives in a 4 inch X 6 inch mailbox outs him as a partisan hack.
Is there any truth to the rumor that he also starches his jeans???

8. If we have lost the war on polls versus mail voting, then the state has lost another voter as well. Good luck to the rest of you.

I will NOT vote by mail. I have NO reason to believe that my vote would be counted, let alone counted properly.

I concede at that point that the socialists have won and it is time for me to leave the state. (or be instrumental in any uprising by an angered populace, if anyone has the guts anymore.....)

9. Glad you're keeping this photo, Stefan. Because it should be hauled out EVERY time KC threatens to go to ALL-mail balloting. We can say "You mean you want even MORE of THIS??" Fuh-get about it!

11. The problem with government workers is that there is no incentive. Give these mooks a $1000 per
illegal voter and see how much they care if
that person should vote or not. Then we will see
if they still want to sleep with Gregoire. For all you liberals this is called free enterprise and it would work .

12. Stefan - I am not a huge fan of vote by mail. But, I do live in Oregon and I am subjected to it. One thing that I do find humorous, all those people complaining about postmarks, and mailed/incomplete absentee ballots have the Washington system to blame. In our vote by mail system it DOES NOT matter whether or not a ballot is postmarked by election day. The ballot must be in the posession of the elections office by the end of the day on election day. We don't let ballots trickle in for a couple of weeks, look at smudged postmarks etc, and count ballots that may or may not be legal. We will leave that up to the awesome Washington system, where you don't even know the results of your elections for a couple of weeks due to waiting for absentee mail ballots, etc. Like I said, I am not endorsing vote by mail. But, at the very least Washington should require the ballot to be in the elections office by the end of the day on election day. Then you don't have buffoons determining smudged postmarks through magnifying glasses influencing Governor's elections.

13. Stefan,

Your comments and picture say something certain about our voting future in this state and region. Like you, I don't envy the canvassing board the miserable duty of inspecting hundreds of envelopes with a magnifying glass either. However, they brought it on themselves and without people on our side like you, I am convinced that no such inspections would take place. All mail voting is a farce that requires honest people to look over the shoulders of Democrats not only about voting, but everything they do.

Thanks very much for your efforts.

14. Wow! I wouldn't brag about being in that photo if I were you! You have the early warning signs of a serious case of flabby MAN BOOBS!!! You need some serious workouts.... You'll never scare latte liberals with THOSE THINGS!!!!!!

15. I was stunned to hear Ron Sims state today that the standard for prosecution had to simply be the commission of an illegal act not just criminal intent.

If that is the standard than Ron Sims should be locked up for life. He has committed many an illegal act, including refusing to abide by court orders.

What a hypocrite!

16. Well Apache, he also isn't being paid over 300,000 per year to stare through magnifying glasss in tuxedo's while they cheat. I suspect with their benefits this rises to close to $400k.

For what I ask?

A predetermined result?

Like this board is non partisan

Make me laugh a little bit harder please!

17. Marc - That is an awesome idea! All ballots must be delivered by COB election day!

18. Apache Fog (aka Headless lucy)---
They aren't called Man Boobs you idiot...they're called MOOBS!!!
Did you also notice Dean Logan's red rash on his cheeks?? It is a clear indicator of someone cheating or at least thinking about it!

19. That picture of Logan, Constantine and Satterberg...with magnifying glasses - for G-d's sake -....is just so damn embarrassing...

Where is the media outrage at yet more problems with King County elections?

I saw Ron Sims on the news..He had the audacity to question why Maleng wasn't going to prosecute Lori Sotelo for her voter challenges??? Is the man insane?? Does anyone else see how Sims wants in on the action of flaunting this fraudulent voter registration travesty? He's publicly joing the "in your face" group of liberals!

I also saw Maleng on the news defending the Republicans interpretation of election laws and suggesting they send the matter up to the state Attorney General (Rob McKenna) and Sos, Sam Reed for clarification......I have no faith in Reed's interpretation..as he is a sound bite for the Dems....We will see...

Posted by: Deborah on November 29, 2005 07:30 PM
20. There is no way the fair-minded people of King County should not fight back against this kind of quasi-totalitarian bilge. Sam Reed is a big WUSS ! We need to call the Feds and keep bugging them until they look into this travesty of justice. They are clearly breaking the law here, but it will go unpassed unless this is brought to the attention of upper echelon law enforcement.

We also need to change the law for voter intent - to diminsh the power of these canvassing boards. They are partisan hacks, with all due respect. Ron Sims doesn't know what he is talking about - what else is new ? He is drunk again in addition to being drunkon power- to bad he stopped going to AA meetings - he has clearly fallen off the wagon.

There is also the option to form a new county - Cascade County. The collective energy of the pi**ed off mass needs to be channeled in a positive direction. Of course, King County will be more corrupt than ever if the Seattle suburban area band together to form another county whose time has come ! Let's DO IT !

21. You have got to read Ron Sim's response to the Challenged Decision. It will make you realize how much work there is still to be done in King County:

He has always been soooooo concerned about how election laws are followed....NOT

Read it all here:

22. This photo is priceless, and begs for a caption, like the last page of The New Yorker magazine. The guy in the middle has his mouth open, so he is the only one who can legitimately be speaking, but you could also write a caption with the other two thinking something...

Example:

Logan: "How many months has October?"
Satterburg (thinking): How come I got the magnifying glass with no handle?"
Constantine (thinking): The media is here, and these two doofuses wear purple shirts. No wonder we've got no **#@ing credibility!"

Posted by: Organization Man on November 29, 2005 09:27 PM
23. Btw, did that guy ever vote and was his vote counted---the one who on election day told Stefan at the polls that he wasn't in town long enough to vote and who Stefan correctly informed wasn't thusly eligible to have his ballot counted?

Posted by: Michele on November 29, 2005 09:58 PM
24. GS: Where do you get off making all those unsubstantiated and false allegations. You slimy piece of fascist crap!

25. Chit, I just found out Eunice Coker, Whitman County Auditor, is going to push for all mail voting. What in the world is the matter with these people?

26. Fog

Look through the fog

Their is a bright light on the other side

Keep looking

Take Dean with you as a headlight

You're sure to stay lost

27. If a mail ballot is challenged, a notice should be mailed to the voter giving them time to validate their vote. If a ballot arrives after the close, a notice of this should be sent to the voter so voter can yell at the post office. I have always suspected that some postals have delayed ballots, just as overseas ballots are delayed.

30. Mr Fog, your party is split down the middle unfortunately, losers on the left (Dean, Kerry, Kennedy, Dicks, moveon.org, sheenan) to say the least, and winners on the right Joe Lieberman, Hillary (imagine that). Most of you are out flailing in the fog and all ya got is those two bright lights. Better watch those two a bit closer before all the air runs out of your fog horns.

Our leader knows exactly where we are headed. Yours has his Head up his ars (Mr Dean)
