Port in a financial storm

Port of Seattle Commissioner Pat Davis was fined yesterday by the Public Disclosure Commission for campaign finance reporting violations. The complaint was filed by frequent Sound Politics commenter Richard Pope! More on Davis' violations here.

Davis has also been criticized for flagrant spending on Port travel junkets:

Davis' biggest bill was $8,490 on a Seattle Chamber International Study Mission to Berlin in 2000. Silver medalist was $8,280 for a 2002 trip that focused on "Barcelona's innovative collaborative approach achieving regional consensus on economic development."
Wow. My wife and I went to Barcelona for our honeymoon and we had a fabulous time for a lot less than $8,280.

Meanwhile, Davis continues to defend the Port's property tax levy, while opponent Jack Jolley wants to do away with it.

1. Nice diary of your trip...... as for public officials on these boondogles..... they need to stop spending our money. I wonder how much we paid for Gregoire's recent trip to China and over 50 of her "friends."

2. I spent an ENTIRE SUMMER in Europe a little over 20 yrs ago for about $2,000 total (airfare included), and visited 8 countries during said time. She could learn a few things from me about frugal travel.

I believe she also hosted a big-bucks fundraiser for Bill Clinton back in 1996. She oughtta be fined for that alone!

3. Um, I have never been a fan of Ms. Davis' mostly due to the big ole cruise ships that park for practally free in our ports. Ms. Davis is a HUGE fan of this. Oh, and of course our newly remodeled airport, she loves that too! Many Republicans in our state have stepped out and endorsed her and truly I am baffled by this. Why have these republicans stepped out and endorsed Ms. Davis? Any thoughts?
