Dean Logan: The Amazing Transparent Man
Dean Logan, who promises "transparency and public access", draws the line at actually giving the public access to information that is potentially embarrassing to himself and Ron Sims. The Amazing Transparent Man continues to stonewall my public records requests. Here's Dean Logan's latest letter to me, an amazing display of non-transparency (background info follows). Status on my public disclosure lawsuit: the attorney is preparing a complaint which he hopes will be ready to file later this week. Any contribution you can make to help me sue Ron Sims to compel disclosure of all requested documents will be greatly appreciated.

[oops, sorry. the link to Logan's latest letter was broken, but it's now fixed]

I have a number of long-outstanding unfulfilled records requests that will be mentioned in the complaint. But this one is perhaps the most egregious violation of the Public Disclosure Act. To recap -- On July 5 I submitted a records request asking to examine a number of original absentee ballot envelopes from the November 2004 election. Logan's response of July 14 was that he didn't want to let me see the original envelopes, but would only release copies. Copies are less than satisfactory to me, as they conceal information that is on the originals, take longer to produce and cost more money. However, Logan promised that if I wanted copies of all returned absentee ballot envelopes to let him know and he would "determine our expected timeline to make those documents available for your inspection".

I wrote back on July 18 asking for all of the returned absentee ballot envelopes, to be released incrementally and in a specifc order so I could examine the ballots I was most interested in first. Logan finally replied, with this letter of August 11, weeks after the 5-day statutory deadline had passed, saying he estimates it will take four months to release all of the copies and that he might or might not have some ready to release to me before then, and not necessarily in the order in which I've requested them. In other words, Dean Logan is spending in the neighborhood of $90,000 in taxpayer funds to make photocopies in order to prevent me from seeing the originals and to slow down the process. Obviously, he wants to slow this down to the point that the information on how badly he botched the processing of absentee ballots last year is concealed from the public long enough that it can't hurt his boss Ron Sims' re-election campaign.

So now its up to me to go to court to sue while the Sims/Logan transparency machine has its own taxpayer-funded lawyer to fend off my suit. Please help me sue Ron Sims to shine a light on his sordid elections department and bring real transparency not just the phoney-baloney Dean Logan-style transparency

1. I've already donated and I am behind you all the way in your campaign to sue Ron Sims.

At the very least, Dean Logan owes the public a straightforward response of why it would take four months to let someone walk in and look at a box of envelopes? If it's more complicated than that, then he should describe why it's more complicated, and why something seemingly so simple would take four months.

Curiously, four months from now happens to be after the November election.

I can't see how anyone could take this as partisan? Afterall, the 2004 election contest if over, and why would any public official be so against disclosure of information that is co-owned by every citizen of King County?

2. If you’re a fan of MST3K, http://www.mst3k.com/
you remember this movie as episode #623.

Dean logan is indeed deserving of much more ridicule than that poor movie ever was.

3. I know we are talking about Logan but I could not pass up this comment from the PI about Sims chances in November.

"I think Ron Sims will manage to do the impossible come November.

No, I don't mean there will be problem-free elections, nor do I think Southwest will move to Boeing Field. I think Ron Sims will make this Democrat vote Republican!"

7. Only six posts?!?!? It's well after 7pm. this has been up for over 5 hours. What are you people doing?

Please support the Sharkansky mental health initiative by commenting early and often on stories such as these. We all fear for what may happen when Stephan realizes he is the only man left standing in King County kept up at night with his petty little public disclosure requests about an election nearly one year old.

8. The 8th update to the Norm Maleng event has more comments than stephan's latest crusade. (OK now I guess it will be even with this one.)

9. Every time you turn around these days, KC employees are quoted saying "transparent." Well pretty is as pretty does, and saying the department is transparent does not make it so without action, otherwise we call it stonewalling. It's like the school geek running around telling everyone he is dating the head cheerleader, hoping that saying it enough will make it so. Dream on looser.

According to the Law, these documents are public records and available for review by the public. Stefan, it is your right (and ours) to inspect any or all of these documents. Go for it, defend your rights and (and ours), will send what we can.

10. Dean Logan's last letter is so transparent it can't be seen. Or was it removed from your web site?

14. Hey whocares...my sentiments exactly as I read your post. I'm fairly confident that I speak for many when I say that I don't give a flying f*** about anything you say.

15. Where is Logan's Office? What are the laws concerning private citizens holding signs in front of his office voicing our displeasure with his non-leadership. He is a putz and shouldn't be running anything. No vision, no ethics and no morals.

Wait....that's right he's a Seattle Democrat, that's the perfect hat trick. He'll be mayor in 4 years after "Wooden Nickles" moves on to some state office that he can run into the ground.

16. Hey, who cares....you must care or you wouldn't be posting 2x's.....and BTW, I'm not a KC resident, but I'm a donor because I believe in what Stefan is doing...alot of us are wanting to clean up KC because if we ever hope to have an honest election in this state, it has to start there. Perhaps your name indicates that you don't care if we have clean & honest elections?
