Another dumb e-mail from an elected official

My father lives in Jerusalem and sends e-mail dispatches about current events in Israel to his friends-and-family list. As it turns out, one of my dad's recent e-mails induced a Dumb e-mail from an elected official

Rep. Sam Hunt received dad's e-mail, presumably forwarded by a mutual friend in Olympia. Yesterday Hunt wrote back to my dad with this one-liner:
So this must be the father of the right wing nut who rails against all logical ideas in Puget Sound. The man you prepared for his Bar Mitzvah...
Rep. Hunt isn't exactly one of my favorite legislators, but what kind of elected official responds to his critics by e-mailing complaints to their parents? And what does my Bar Mitzvah, which I celebrated in 1976, have to do with any of this? Sheesh.

UPDATE: Okay, here's what happened. Hunt sent this e-mail to my father by accident. He meant to send it to their mutual friend, who was in fact involved in my Bar Mitzvah education 30 years ago. Hunt may have sponsored a bunch of silly legislation and might be a careless user of e-mail, but let's not get carried away in the comments with accusations of anti-Semitism. I see no indication that that applies here.

1. I think the presumption has to be that he's an anti-Semite. I certainly can't think of another reason for saying that.

Perhaps he can explain. He should certainly be required to try.

2. You know if a republican had said this that the press would have been on him like white on rice, most certainly calling for his resignation or something. Treat others as you wish to be treated...my guess is that Mr. Hunt needs to go back to kindergarten.

3. That one is TRULY incredible!

Right wing nut? Just because you want fair elections and have a political opinion that is to the right of socialism? Or, is it because you are against the monorail circus ride that was doomed from day one and turned out to be an $11 billion money pit?

Want to see more of how these people think?

Go check out Patty Murray's secret "Community Meeting" at Bellevue City Hall, Wednesday, August 3, from 1:15 to 2:15.

More on Murray's secret meeting here.

At this secret "Community Meeting" you will see Seattle establishment feminist organizations play the gender-politics game in order to keep the federal pork coming.

4. Personally, I think successfully stealing an election has emboldened all of the left wing wackos in this state. They think they are above the law, reproach, and the judgement of the Almighty. Well, do they have a big surprise coming. Meanwhile, they will continue to make fun of my beliefs, Stefan's beliefs, and the beliefs of all of the rest of our SP friends. One thing I know for certain is that I won't ever say anything negative about Stefan's beliefs, he won't say anything negative about mine, and the same goes for the rest of our SP friends. These idiots are going to sink on their own words when the pendulum swings, which it will.

5. "what kind of elected official responds to his critics by e-mailing complaints to their parents"

One that thinks he cannot be beaten. One that is so arrognant that soon he will be thrown out of office.

8. Another example of elected liberal democrats thinking that they are bigger than the great unwashed out here. Some day these guys will get their butt kicked and will be out on here. Can you imagine if Hillery gets elected to the big ticket

11. Oh my God!

Stefan,

To reply to a forwarded email from your father - and to say such offensive things about you and your fathers preparation of your Bar Mitzvah - Mr. Hunt has indeed revealed himself to be anti-Semite and a man who SHOULD NOT be working in any public capacity!

I'm sending a copy of this out to be reviewed by several Jewish organizations in western Washington......It's time the Jewish community saw the creepy liberal left for what they truly are!

12. After reading this post I sent the following to Mr. Hunt

----------------

"Saw this posting regarding a recent email you sent.

"So this must be the father of the right wing nut who rails against all logical ideas in Puget Sound. The man you prepared for his Bar Mitzvah... "

Another stupid comment from a left wing wacko. It would be better to write nothing that display your ignorance.

------------

You don't think he would so dumb as to reply do you?

Ken

13. I agree with Stefan. I don't see any anti-semitism in the e-mail. What I do see is Sam Hunt's expectation that if the mutual friend helped prepare Stefan for Bar Mitzvah, then he should have prepared him to agree with Sam Hunt. Now, pair that with the fact that Hunt can't work his e-mail, and I'd call that just plain Double Dumb! He must have gotten his education under a bridge!

Posted by: katomar on August 1, 2005 08:47 PM
14. OK, now it makes sense as an identification. I withdraw the presumption of anti-Semitism.

Hunt is merely a useless, rude, intolerant, hate-filled moron.

But based on what was in your original post, the accusation of anti-Semitism was perfectly reasonable. No one got "carried away."

Posted by: ScottM on August 1, 2005 08:52 PM
15. Hunt and Moeller are obviously graduates of the Ron Simms school of home training.
The arrogance of these two and many others on the left is amazing to me. I am so glad I have 2 solid conservative Reps and one solide conservatice senator in the 39th.
Send an email to them and if you have a differing opinion, you get a phone call, not an insult.

16. Stefan, It's ok, don't lose any sleep over this represented official's comments, he was probably abused as a child.

Deep down he's most likely very jealous of your success, he and the rest of the dems are on borrowed time.

BTW - Your father lives in a very beautiful city, J'lem is wonderful, been to Israel three times...my home away from home! :o) Ray

17. I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Mr. Hunt's careless quip about your Bar Mitzvah as an acceptable joke among friends.....

Unless he is Jewish himself (and even then...)- you and your father have every right to be offended and concerned!

(God works in mysterious ways! heh! Just think of the odds of Hunt *accidently* sending THAT email to the father of that "right wing nut" from Puget Sound!)

19. Stefan,

Nice too know that your father was informed that he raised a "RIGHT WING NUT" who rails again "Logical Ideas". I certainly hope your father "straighten's him out" on a few items.

All Bullsheet aside, it was still rude, and not PC for a person in "his position" (I am not even going with the word his "Capacity") I would hope an email of apology will reach your fathers inbox shortly.

He needs some simple Email Tutoring too!!!

20. I really think the liberals are starting to come apart at the seams. It seems that more and more of their hatred, lies and decete are coming out of the darkness and into the light. Sims, Logan, Moeller, and now Hunt all in a matter of days. I keep thinking that they are starting to come apart as a party and they are so arrogant they cannot see what is right in front of their face.

I have to say it "what goes around comes around" and I hope that it’s close to coming around.

21. Now I'm REALLY worried about the caliber of WA leadership. Silly emails. Wrong emails. Any of these turkeys have their little paws on the WA homeland defense launch buttons? Gawd. That gives me a warm & fuzzy.

Smiling, arrogant buffoons sitting in a wood-paneled gentleman's club sipping sherry. Outside, the common folk are clamoring and banging on the windows, warning of the wildfires raging nearby outside. The fires are the state of our state and elections. With a good wind, we can only hope the November fires will consume the Incumbent Club.

24. "...logical ideas in Puget Sound"? Is he talking about ideas that emit from Olympia? I can't think of logical ideas from the current bunch of politicians in Puget Sound. I guess if the bar is low enough, they tend to think their ideas are logical. Flies think eating dung is logical too.

26. Y'all want to know why these dipsticks are in Olympia doing a blue falcon on us?

They are to stupid to hold a real job. They would forget to flip the burger, could figure out which side of the broom is up, don't know a mop needs a bucket and water.

What even worse is we keep reelecting these north ends of south bound mules to office.

Which begs the question who are the real dummies?

Sigh.....

Those who can do, those who can't teach, those who don't know what we're talking about run for office.

Anyway next election just remember no incumbent gets re-elected.

27. Okay...I have to say...in all my years of sending email...I've never sent something to the wrong person. I've used the excuse that I have over 100 times though.

Posted by: Mark D on August 1, 2005 10:40 PM
28. September 1983: Howard Cosell: "look at that little monkey run!"

September 1983 + one day: Howard Cosell... I really didn't mean it.

September 1983 + two days: end of Cosell's career.

Carelessness is no excuse for bigotry and hatred, but it makes a darn convenient cover for the mushy-minded folks that walk that particular path.

If I would have sent that e-mail to ANYONE I know personally, I would fully expect to have my ass handed to me both figuratively and literally. Anti-semitism is a very dark, deadly cloud that rises on a horizon one least expects... and one must always be wary and alert.

This speaks to the earlier post on Moeller in many ways... how can one trust a public official with no common sense- or any appreciable communication skills?

Egads... what a mighmarish joke Washington has become. May God have mercy on us all.

Posted by: Dan on August 1, 2005 10:45 PM
29. Exactly Dan...the "excuse" he came up with is the same one I would have tried. Especially if I had some sort of way to make it credible...like he seems to have. I don't like jumping all over someone that has made a mistake..but how many times do you reply to an email to the wrong person? It can happen if it's a "reply to all" situation and you meant to reply to just the sender...but I haven't heard that was the reason.

Posted by: Mark D on August 1, 2005 10:50 PM
30. Really.... Do all legislators use their state email accounts in this way? Sending, receiving, or responding to personal emails with state equipment/accounts is against most of the departmental ethical codes. But then again, I guess the legislators don't think that ethics codes apply to them. PLEASE! Send me an email like that Rep. Hunt, and see how far I take it.

Posted by: Debt on August 1, 2005 10:51 PM
31. Okay..I was just looking at this again...the email was forwarded from a mutual friend in Olympia. Is this the same mutual friend he tried to reply to but got Stefan's dad by accident? It makes sense given what he wrote back..but emailing the guy that forwarded the email is usually the default...It would almost take some effort to email back the person who originated the email.

In the end...if Stefan is okay with it then so am I.

Posted by: Mark D on August 1, 2005 10:55 PM
32. You know, I think I saw Hunt and Rep. Moeller driving together on their way to a support group meeting at a local chapter of "Tacky Legislators Anonymous".

But seriously, I think what Hunt MEANT to write was THIS: So this must be the father of the right wing blogger who rails against all ILLOGICAL ideas in Puget Sound.

Yeah, I think THAT'S what he meant to write....

Posted by: Michele on August 1, 2005 11:04 PM
33. Not to pile on, but it would seem that rudimentary communication skills should be a prerequisite to holding the office of a public official, no?

Whether it be e-mail, morse code or carrier pigeon, someone in such a position should have a basic grasp of HOW TO COMMUNICATE.

Sorry, gang... this particular gaffe is inexcusable and I smell a resignation in the near future. Fry it, cook it, broil it, smoke it, lay it out in the sun and run over it multiple times with your car, but this still reeks of anti-Semitism. Period.

Posted by: Dan on August 1, 2005 11:05 PM
34. Reminds me of the old saying, "never get into a war of words with someone who buys ink by the barrel." So here comes this guy, who ostensibly holds himself out as smart and savvy, who takes gratuitous shots at and disses upon the person who writes one of the most widely read political blogs in Washington. Unless there's a method to that madness that I don't see, it's a really dumb thing to do. He probably sees you as the enemy, and therefore not mattering to his core constituency, but still, it wasn't necessary and therefore not very politic. With that kind of representation, it makes me glad I don't live in Boston Harbor anymore, although I loved it when I did.

35. Offtopic alert:

I don't see a special place to put this, so I'll put it here. In this thread, and in quite a few threads I keep hearing the threats "oh just wait, the dems are in trouble come next election!". What on earth prompts this thought??
The dems have proven even in a court of "law" that they can successfully violate law, and steal elections by casting many illegal votes. Considering they have been villified in court, what makes ANYONE think that this won't get even worse next election? Why would they stop? Why would anything change? In fact, why SHOULD anything change?
They have been handed a blank voting card and told to submit as many as they wish and won't suffer any consequences. So, for anyone who thinks next election will be any different than the last one, I don't understand why you think that way.

Thanks!
Greg

36. Gee, sounds like another classles idiot to me. Hunt and Moeller seem to forget that they can easily be replaced come 2006 if their seats are up!! It wouldn't be a bad idea to find out if these folks seats are up for grabs for 2006 & send them out on a rail or moving van!!

38. I actually believe both of the explanations (e.g. given the context there is no anti-Semitism in that statement, and it is easy to reply to the wrong person if the e-mail was forwarded as an attachment instead of in the body)..

But ignoring those things, this is still a really dumb e-mail. Just which "logical" ideas has Stefan railed against?
Monorail boondoggles that cost billions and are so horribly mismanaged that even their leftie supporters are bailing on them?
Vote-by-mail, following an election that demonstrated in court that they can't keep track of the mail-in ballots they have NOW?
Ron Sims' latest reading from his Communist Idea Of The Week Desk Calendar?
Toothless voting "reform" that leaves gaping holes, and in fact codifies them?

Those that think Stefan is out of the "mainstream" might want to check the current around themselves a bit; I think they might find they've gotten sucked out into some pretty deep water off the left coast.

Posted by: RookieRick on August 2, 2005 07:38 AM
39. On second thought . . . :

Rep. Hunt's email is incredibly offensive.

Imagine a GOP legislator, receiving a forwarded email from a man helping AIDS patients in Uganda. Imagine this man in Uganda is the father of a local Puget Sound black activist.

What if the GOP legislator wrote:

So this must be the father of the left wing nut who insists that we must pay him not to have a job, in the form of welfare. The man you taught how to rap . . .

In my silly statement here and in Rep. Hunt's email, a hatred for opposing viewpoints is displayed, but worse, the fact that racial references are made indicates the presence of at least subconscious racial thinking.

Posted by: ARS on August 2, 2005 08:10 AM
40. I think GregMa has it right.

How can you possibly lose an election when:
1) You can print your own ballots
2) The courts allow that you can have more votes than voters
3) That you can have recounts, if your first guess on how many vote to manufacture is off and
4) the courts are fine with these practices?

I don't see how "getting out the vote" is significant when the opposition can create their votes out of whole cloth.

You can't get election reform without getting in legislators who will support it. You can't get the legislators in without the election reform.

Truly a Catch-22.

41. Two gems for sure. I know I sent one into Shark and it's a laugher from my rep. I think the Dems have it in their thick skulls they can say anything, do anything other than get caught with a kid in their office and get away with it. Truth is they often do.

42. Ok, so he's semi-off the hook for the comment, but he's not off the hook for calling you and anyone that agrees with your positions a "right wing nut". And I think he needs to look up the definition of "logical". There's absolutely nothing about liberal positions that can remotely be considered "logical", or based in "logic" or even "commin sense". Representative Hunt Hunt has outed himself as the kind of liberal idealogue who serves ONLY the left wing of his constituency. If you are a REPUBLICAN IN HIS DISTRICT YOU ARE NOTHING TO HIM! Why don't you Robublicans in the 22nd district mount a credible candidate to run against this LEFT WING NUTBAG? Or would you rather continue to have your beliefs totally and completely UNREPRESENTED?

Coho would jump on that & get the kid fired; is it political relativity? only left ('progressive') issues? bank clerk jazzing up your account?

if railing against the current federal administration is ok (which you have a right to)--people who influence our lives--then why is railing against the current state admin. not as relevant? ANY politician should be judged on his/her actions and statements; no exceptions; both sides slip up--it's our duty to monitor both sides & hold them to their actions; spin goes both ways; sift through it or be swept away in the comfy current; blindly defending any political party is like that warm sensation you feel in the pool--it's not the pool heater--
