Connelly gulled by spoof site

The P-I's Joe Connelly in Wednesday's column: "McGavick Web site cleans up; foes ought to do same"

Just before leaving work last week, I punched up the volunteer-run Web site touting prospective U.S. Senate candidate Mike McGavick and read its provocative opening line: "IT IS TIME FOR A MAN TO REPRESENT WASHINGTON."

The beginning of a new workweek saw a new message on mikemcgavick.com: "This site is currently under construction. Please check back in a couple weeks." The soon-to-be ex-Safeco CEO has taken charge of his political fortunes, exiling sexism.

Connelly fell for a prank. The home page of mikemcgavick.com currently has nothing more than an "under construction" message. But had Connelly not been in such a hurry to get out of the office last week, he might have questioned whether any serious candidate would actually adopt such a silly slogan as "IT IS TIME FOR A MAN TO REPRESENT WASHINGTON". He might also have looked a little closer and realized that mikemcgavick.com is a spoof site.

UPDATE: Nathan Azinger reveals that the creator of the McGavick spoof site is Gerald Toompas, former technology director of the Young Democrats of Washington.

UPDATE 2: Connelly revised his column, admitting he was had.

1. More quality journalism by the "MSM"! Hah!

2. His obesity clouds his judgment.

3. Looks like Connelly fell for the old MSM "Catchy headline" trick: all flash and no real substance.

I relish great moments in journalism such as this.

4. More report first investigate later or never journalism from Connelly and the MSM.

5. Are you serious???

I saw that site when I was looking for McGavik's bio last week.....(snicker)....it took me about 2 seconds to figure out it wasn't a *McGavik sanctioned* site!

I hope Connelly feels very stupid....Maybe he will even learn something from this......?......Nah!

6. Yay it made the newspaper, I hoped it would.

It was a lot of fun while it lasted; and I don't regret not having control anymore; i cant say more.

Keep up the good reporting ;)

7. Spoofer,
If you are the real deal, just wondering how much $$$ you got for the domain name?

8. I had this site pointed out to me on my CantwellvWashington blog a few days ago.

I cannot believe he actually fell for this. It took me less then a minute to figure out the site was obviously fake.

I DON'T think he fell for this. I think he did it on purpose, now that I think about it.

9. The MSM is too eager to believe bad things about Repubs and conservatives. (ex Dan Rather)

10. I have to agree with Cliff - I wouldn't be surprised if Connelly didn't figure it out too, but then realized he could report on the "embarrassing" site and later claim he was fooled...after the damage was done, of course. People will remember the initial report, but aren't likely to remember the retraction.

(Also, don't be surprised if during the campaign the Cantwell camp brings this up again, followed by their own almost inaudible "apology" for the "mistake" - that, or claims that the "spoof site" was just a cover for the initial gaffe.)

11. A guy with the handle mikemcgavick was posting on SP last week spouting drivel. He also promoted "his" web site. I posted and asked him how long I thought it would stay up there.

Connelly needs to do a mea culpa on Sound Politics and apologize real nice.

12. Looks like the democRAT slime machine is getting back in gear -- just tip o'da iceberg -- next three and a half months will be real interesting -- don't let the knee high boots outta sight

13. Connelly, a proud graduate of the Dan Rather school of fact checking.

It sure must suck to be a Liberal.

14. Connelly is an idiot. Pure and simple. It's not fair to use his weight as an issue. That's unfair to the many smart, fat people out there. And I'm not even fat!

15. Connelly will not retract his story about this unless this incident blows up to Dan Rather scale.

16. I may have some breaking news on this, but unlike the MSM, I won't print it until I check it out thoroughly.

17. I went back thru some of the SP threads posted while in was in Montana. The picture of Stefan and Cornholey was priceless.
Cornholey clearly suffers from a seriously debilitating medical condition called "DICKEY-DO DISEASE". Cornholey's belly clearly hangs out much further than his DICKEY-DO!!!

18. Cost of the website.......$29.00
Internet Service..........$30.00

Making Connelly look foolish........"Priceless"

19. "Making" Connelly look foolish.. Impossible. He does it all by himself. No "making" required.

Posted by: duhh on July 27, 2005 09:58 AM
20. Insulting a fata$$ LEFTIST PINHEAD like Joel Cornholey is quite therapeutic. As one last release at Cornholey's expense let me warn you Stefan. If you, your wife or daughter get a hand-knit sweater from Cornholey for your B-Day, I would bet it was knit using the lint from Cornholey's massive belly-button. Hell, you could probably hide a whole dang sheep in there!!

21. Consider the news broken.

22. I wonder if Gerald Toompas knows who passed out those racial flyers in Cheney recently.

Posted by: cc on July 27, 2005 12:30 PM
23. Haven't heard of that. =(

Posted by: Gerald on July 27, 2005 12:38 PM
24. Credit where due: First, of course, to Stefan for catching this mistake. Second, to Nathan for identifying the culprit. Third, to Joel Connelly.

Credit to Connelly? Yes, not for the mistake of course, but for the criticism he gives "Congressman-for-life" Jim McDermott farther down in the column. For instance:

"He [McDermott] lied, and he has never explained or apologized for it."

That's plain enough, I think.

Now one could say that Connelly is only doing his job, that any journalist in this area should take a crack at McDermott from time to time. But criticism of McDermott from other journalists in this area is, in fact, quite rare.

As anyone who has read my site for long knows, I often disagree with Connelly and sometimes find mistakes in his work. But I will also say that he has been pretty good on McDermott, at least since I moved back to this area.

25. Like any good conservative, I want to retract the statement I made above that Connelly would never retract.
