Gregoire Is 41st

In popularity among the governors, according to Survey USA.  Her July ratings (38 percent approve, 52 percent disapprove) show that she is in a hole, but I would not conclude that that she can not get out of it in the next three years.  Many politicians have come back from worse ratings.  And the "mainstream" media will give her a lot of help.

1. The MSM may give her some help, but I don’t think it will be enough. Gregoire and her minions are her own worst enemies. She has demonstrated complete arrogance and total disregard for the people of the state she represents. To recover, she would need to detach herself from the liberal ideology the drives her decision making which would alienate her from the powerbase (unions, corrupt government, etc.) that she owes her success to.

2. This only means that 9 other hated governors have smaller percentages of party loyalists in their states, right?

If Washington wasn't a liberal haven west of the Cascades, she'd be far worse off than 41st.

Posted by: Mike on July 14, 2005 09:09 AM
3. Imagine what her numbers east of the Cascades must be for the statewide average to be 38%.

4. Fraudoire's poll numbers aren't surpising to me. After all, she hails from the liberal looney bin called King County.

If it wasn't for the fraud committed in King County to get her into office, she'd be looking for a job right now.

5. You guys are so perceptive. Yes, if Washington didn't have so many Democrats, it would have fewer Democrats.

Your haranguing about the MSM is also amusing. Didn't the state's largest newspaper endorse Rossi? Oh, I forgot -- that was just a conspiracy to make people think they were open-minded.

Posted by: Bruce on July 14, 2005 09:39 AM
6. I'd actually put her rank at 42. She's tied for 41 on the basis of 38% approval, but when you rank the 41s by disapproval, that she's one up from the bottom.

I suspect the reason for her rise in approval since the last survey was because she's not in the news as much these days, with the legislative session having receded further into memory and people are enjoying the summer. Once she's in the news again, people will again be reminded how much they don't like her.

7. "You guys are so perceptive. Yes, if Washington didn't have so many Democrats, it would have fewer Democrats."

Howdy Bruce

It sure sucks to be a Democrat and have to defend her doesn't it.

8. The top four in approval were Rs and the bottom 5 were Rs. Anything relevant here?

I couldn't find anything else here that was significant. West Coast had the bottom ten in approval- Ahhnold, Oregon and Brigoire.

Posted by: swatter on July 14, 2005 09:50 AM
9. I like her- she REALLY is uniting the state.

Unfortunately for her, nothing unites people like a common enemy.

If it hadn't been for Gregoire- how would so many people have worked together to get 912 out the door. That was FANTASTIC! I look forward to doing it again for the next 3 years.

I think she's done more to unite the state than any state official in the last 20 years. If Rossi had won- I would have just trusted him at the helm- but now we all get to take part in the pain of containing Seattle's follies.

There's a Chinese proverb or two in there somewhere. If not, Christine will travel to China to find one for me.

10. SWAssociates..... Thank you for my morning Giggle!!! You most likely made my whole day.

BTW - Bruce, you must be reading MSM somewhere else. If they supported Rossi, why didnt they "Report" all the Bullsheet that KC pulled when the ballots were being counted....

As SWA pointed out, must be really hard to be a democrat, and defend such a "Ludicrous" Leader. (Ludicrous was her word, not mine)

11. Maybe when the Queen gets settled from her "healing tour" in Europe, she can get her approval numbers up.

12. Bruce you are so correct, let us remember:

As long as Dear Leader Comrade Christine Gregoire the brilliant statesman, political genius, prodigious humanist, intellectual giant, prolific songwriter, superb theorician, and invincible commander leads the Juche-based woman-centered Korean-style socialist perfect system freely chosen by the people of Washington in single-minded profound respect and admiration for Dear Leader and her invincible Songun politics, the criminal capitalist crooked contrived Republician imperialists will never defeat, stifle, or browbeat the great invincible prosperous powerful Democratic People's Republic of Washington into submission thanks to Dear Leader's invincible Songun politics that are the lifeblood of the people of Washington.

13. I liked the Slimes "endorsement" of Rossi; "The demo candidate sucks so bad, we just can't stand the thought of her in office. So what are we left with? Oh yea. The other guy. Whatever."

Nice employment of liberal "nuance" there Brucie. You are sharp as a tack.....

The Seattle Times

The Times endorses
Rossi offers voters a fresh beginning

Washington has not had a Republican governor in 20 years. Government, even when run by good people, requires a periodic cleaning out, which can be done only if the out-of-power party offers a credible candidate. This year, it has. He is former state Sen. Dino Rossi, who receives this paper's endorsement for governor.

Last year, Rossi, a Sammamish Republican, was the man who made the no-new-taxes budget stick. Recall that time: State government was $2.6 billion in the hole. Our economy was in recession, and our unemployment rate was No. 1 in the nation. Raising taxes would have been the easiest thing to do. California did. Idaho did. Oregon did. In the two previous recessions, so did Washington.

Gov. Gary Locke proposed a no-new-taxes budget, but it had unacceptable cuts in spending on the poor, and insiders were skeptical that Locke was serious. Rossi made the Locke budget palatable. Rossi has a mind for numbers — but also a mind to listen and craft a deal.

Attorney General Christine Gregoire has a different set of traits and skills. She is smart as a whip. She is an attorney, an advocate. She knows the bureaucracy better than Rossi does, but she is also of it and more sympathetic to it.

Coming from the private sector, Rossi is more likely to work harder at straightening out 20 years of administrative rules that now encumber our economic recovery. Locke, spurred by Boeing's corporate goodbye, did some of this, to his credit. He set up a Council on Competitiveness. He set up a budget review called Priorities of Government, which Gregoire and Rossi both say they will use.

Our bet is that Rossi will use it more effectively. Simply put, it is difficult to fire your friends, and for 20 years state government has been in the hands of Democrats.

Our case for Rossi has not mentioned education, health care or a dozen other things. All those things cost money, and the money is not there. The economy comes first. Nor is our argument about social issues mentioned, in which our sympathies are with Gregoire. Rossi has said his candidacy is not about social issues, and we take his word on that.

The central issue in this election is change in the administrative culture of Olympia, and for that reason our support goes to the Republican nominee, Dino Rossi.

15. On the plus side, she beat out California's governator, who is rated number 46! Maybe she can take consolation in that statistic.

Posted by: Alan on July 14, 2005 10:48 AM
16. Yikes! Ms. Gregoire is losing Metro Seattle. 41% Approve, 48% Disapprove. Not lookin too good babe!

Posted by: bmvaughn on July 14, 2005 10:58 AM
17. Bruce - True enough, the Seattle Times did endorse Rossi. But I have good reason to believe that the endorsement was a decision made by the publisher, not the usual editorial board.

That explains why, for instance, the Seattle Times did so little to support "their" candidate during the recount fight.

Given their ideologies, I expect Lance Dickie, Joni Balter, Danny Westneat, and others at the Times to try to revive Gregoire's fortunes. Do I expect them to fudge facts and ignore logic in that effort? Well, let me just say that I hope they won't.

Posted by: Jim Miller on July 14, 2005 11:14 AM
18. Alan - I was down in California last week at relatives and talked about Arnold. It's amazing how a Republican governor in a state controlled by Democrats in fiscal crisis is blamed for raising money to hold onto power. Are people so stupid to believe that Arnold can defeat the entire California liberal establishment by simply saying, "please"?

My brother-in-law is a fireman with CDF. The state is billions in deficit and he complains that "Arnold" is not funding his department adequately. It's unbelievable!

It highlights one common flaw in liberal governance in both states - the total lack of prioritization. Firemen would have all the resourses they need if California's liberal legislature would stop funding illegal aliens in the state.

19. One can make a case that the roadmap to success and re-election is wide open for her.
All she has to do is embrace the Initiatives heading to the voters this Fall and present the illusion of leadership to finally do real audits and, oh happy day...find several hundred millions of dollars being wasted than can now be effectively spent. This part is easy. The next step is to address the citizens of the State with a message that she has heard the voters and is paying attention. Declare its time to roll up our sleves and get down to serious, inclusive, and real transportation improvements. Then in '07 throw in some token tax cut and the mansion is hers for another term.
I actuly believe she is smart enough to consider this, but there is no way in heck the Dem Party will allow it.
The program now will be to go after buisnesses to make up for the I-912 shortfall, and punish the taxpayers through other means.

20. While we are here ranting about Gregoire, her minions are quietly going about banning septic tanks and drainfields or requiring a special state permit for them. Same goes for interceptor trenches filled with washed rock.

Ecology is going full bore on their new "Screw Washington" campaign called the UIC- Underground Injection Control.

The effect could be a real GMA or rural area preservation program.

21. I don't see Gregoire's numbers improving much over the next three years. So long as voters remember the gas tax (which WILL be a thing of the past once the voters have their say) Gregoire's approval ratings will be low. I just can't figure out why politicians in Washington keep consenting to various tax increases. Voters in this state have consistently shown that they are virulently anti-tax. Gregoire is only the latest political casualty in the WA tax wars. I suspect that she will pay dearly for the gas tax in November 2008.

22. Did we count PR, VI and other territories? How about asking Brussels?

What was Mexico City's breakdown? She worked with them on a Mexican-made school plan for WA, remember?

24. No doubt the MSM will work hard to lift Gregoire the Wonder Woman from the gutter. I agree with Jim, the owners of the Silly Times are a little more interested in profit than the editorial board, which includes Vagina Warrior Joni Balter. On balance, the Times is left of center.

But, are these papers going to report their support of Gregoire as contributions in kind? Hell, Joni Balter has already been doing free PR work for fellow gender feminist Maria Cant.

25. I live south of Sacramento and the gov just signed the new budget the other day. As you know this government is all dems, they are now bitching about him signing it. They don't even like their own budget. I'll never really understand their thinking. Guess I ain't that stupid to think like a coomie-socialist!!!

Posted by: Howard on July 14, 2005 04:35 PM
26. No surprise here!
Gregoire's approval rate will only continue to go down as the people of this state (both Democrats and Republicans) witness more of her tax and land grabs!
There is something very sinister going on in this state and other states around the country. There seems to be a common theme of :
1.removal of land rights,
2.overturning of the people's initiative processes,
3.sneaky tax increases,
4.introduction of *sin* taxes,
5.election corruption
6.liberal judicial rulings
......etc..

I am also seeing an incredible number of RINO's lately....The Republican party has been infiltrated by liberal's in sheep's clothing....

I think I'll study the *R's* on the list - who show a poor approval rating and see what their problem is..... Everyone knows that Ahnold isn't a true conservative...but I wonder about the others...

27. Don't blame us...we elected Rossi!

Posted by: flexnfx on July 14, 2005 10:49 PM
28. Wow! Looking at the survey details on the worst Republican and Democrat Governors....They all seem to show similar results! They all have some hefty disapproval ratings from every category and class of citizens surveyed. (This means everyone hates them..)heh..

Looking at Gregoires detailed survey - everyone hates her too - except Black-Female-Democrat-Liberals-over 55-who claim Graduate School-never attend church-are pro-choice-and live in metropolitan Seattle.........Gee..that just doesn't sound like the average Washington citizen...

Those who disapprove of Gregoire tend to be male-between 35-54-hispanic or white-Republican-conservative-claiming no college-who occaisionally attend church-are pro-life and live in Eastern WA or Western WA......

The second group that disapproves of Gregoire tend to be female-18 to 34-claiming race as white or other-consider themselves *not sure* or Independent-Moderates-with college education-who attend church regularly-are not sure on abortion-live in Western WA...

(pssst..Christine....I think you should try to cater to those older Black liberal Democrat women who abort babies and are professional students - never attend church and live in Downtown Seattle....Because they are your voter base....and probably your entire voter base!)

Posted by: Deborah on July 14, 2005 11:03 PM
29. Hmmm, outside of metro Seattle (where she's tanking even in a city that went about 80% for Kerry), she's hated about equally in both the western and eastern portions of the state. Not lookin' too good for x-tine!

30. Polls? Opinions? Who cares. No one listens to opinions. No one listens to voters.

Whether rated 1 or 41, follow the bouncing ball--actions, elections & recent laws passed tell the REAL story of a Gov.

Posted by: Jimmie-howya-doin on July 15, 2005 10:50 AM
31. republican or democrat, they all face the same problems. we know the fed (bush) isnt doing its job leaving more and more burdens on the states. then people blame the governor for the budget/immigration/education/healthcare crisis.

i voted for gregoire and know rossi won fare and square. its prefectly fine with me that king county cheated. rossi is anti-gay and so are the republicans, i figure they cheat me every day.
