Grim ferry tale

Food service is returning to (some) of the state's government-run ferries after a year-and-a-half absence.

The article fails to mention the reason why there was such a long gap in onboard food service -- an extortion mafia called the Inlandboatmen's Union somehow managed to convince the state legislature to prohibit passengers from purchasing food on board the ferries unless the IBU got a skim of the revenue.

1. Privatize the entire system. Anyone with a boat and a basic permit ought to be able to Ferry passengers around the Sound.

And there ought to be more large private car Ferry companies as well.

The prices are high, and the service and number of routes and runs are low. Sounds like a state monopoly.

2. Jeff B.,

There you go making sense again.

3. I'm sorry, Stefan, I must have missed something in your links. I went to each of them, but saw nothing about the IBU getting a "skim of the revenue."

That phrase seems like more than an exaggeration, Stefan, when your links refer to a union representing its members in wage and working condition negotiations -- and nothing more.

4. You guys obviously have a short memory. Remember the Black Ball Line? Large car ferries are a money loser, plain and simple. However, they are crucial infrastructure critical to boosting commerce in this state, just like roads and bridges. In fact, the state considers them to be part of the highway system, and rightly so.

5. Denying the public food as a coercive economic measure by the Union is a bit excessive, even if it's euphemized as 'representing its members'. Said union already has a monopoly on ferry berths - so monopoly unionism is good, and only monopoly capitalism is bad? Seems like the annual wage for grunts on those boats is pretty high already, so what supports extorting a percentage of the coffee on top of it?

Isn't the dog in the manger story another example of this tactic?

6. Should have known there was a Union involved. They want to monopolize the business and drive up the prices as does all of the other Unions.

BTW, don't know if anyone's heard but, the cost of living allowance the Department of Labor and Industries was suppose to get starting July 1st has been delayed because someone filed an unfair labor practice suit against the State Union. They named two people they say are responsible for the delay because they filed the suit which I believe should fall under the Whistle Blower Act or at least the Public Disclosure Act. All of the blame was placed on these two people. So, until the issue is resolved, no COLA for the workerbees. However, the Managers and Supervisors, who they say fall into a different catagory, are getting their raises. All of this after they required everyone to join the union as a basis of employment.

The suit was filed because members of the Union prevented people from having access to the petitions that would require a fair vote on the new contract. They physically blocked access to the petition.

7. The ferry runs should be opened up to private competition, and if the state service is so great, it will win in the marketplace, right?

The original ferry service was provided privately, ala the Mosquito Fleet, and could be again, even with some overlap of service with the state.

The main problem that I see, is that everytime the state gets into a business, one of the first acts is to pass a law which makes it illegal to compete against their state run enterprise.

Back on to the original topic, it's shameful that food service was held hostage for 18 months because the union claimed that baristas making your coffee on the ferry had to be classified as mariners and covered under the union contract. It should be an open bid system. The union can offer their package deal, and if it's superior then it will win the bid.

8. I gotta go with Ryan on this one.

I'd leave the ferry system alone, but concentrate on privatizing KC Metro, which would be a money maker.

(besides, you wouldn't have to worry about union goons pushing lousy "food" on the buses ;'}

9. Hank -- please show me where it says they were "extorting a percentage of the coffee." I didn't see anything about that in the links Stefan posted. Maybe someone has some information that that is what they were doing, but I didn't see it in these links.

10. NoCoho: Do your friggin research. That was in the news a year and a half ago.

Jeff B.: I, too, long for the days of the skeeter fleet!

12. The IBU doesn't want private ferries either. Guess why? (Clue: it has to do with not getting their cut . . .)

13. There's several examples of Union-led negotiation tactics in this complaint by the union against the WSF:

14. Northern Coho: By requiring that all food service peronell be members of the IBU, the IBU jacks up wages and prices, and gets more union dues. In my book this amounts to extortion, but it is standard union tactics.

15. Take a look at some typical Prevailing Wages....
A Crew Deckhand makes over $70,000 a year!!!! Plus benefits. That is why the Ferry System (and most Public Works projects) have financial problems.

16. I found the Inland Boatman wage rates.
I believe they are asking the Food Service personnel to be classified as 'Cooks', thereby getting $60K a year plus benefits.

17. Anyone catch Dino Speaks?

I was not amused to find out that the 1000 employees that Queen Christine let go was a union favor.

Dino said the unions approached him and requested him to cut the budget there many times (ie lay people off).

21. Wow, go figure, a union screwing people over - and all in the name of "helping people out." What a shock. What happened to Coho? I noticed he stopped responding.
These types of unions are a cancer on our country.

I think Coho had to go adjust/consume his resposne.

23. NorCo,

Please show me how the IBU was 'representing its members' when the baristas they targeted weren't members in the first place? And why shouldn't their dog-in-the-manger tactics of denying the PUBLIC coffee as a coercive measure be recognized and properly denounced as naked thuggery?

If their intent was to increase their membership by forcing the ferry system to enlist baristas as IBU members (hand, reef and steer an espresso machine? Please...), then the intent of the tactic is effectively the same as skimming a percentage of the coffee.

24. Where are the tribes? Why can't they spend their tax-free billions and help run ferry boats? Why not put some gambling dollars back into the economy? Community value & service? They are silent. But they love their community when it's time to develop malls like Quil Ceda, right?
