Out with a bang or a whimper?

Just got this e-mail from Geof Logan, one of the Monorail's most dogged critics. It looks the Monorail is done. Let's just hope the end is both quick and final. The last thing we need is for the same collection of clowns and idiots to keep collecting the MVET while they wank us around for years in a hopeless attempt to deliver what they are obviously incapable of delivering.

I told many people that, based on my past experience in 15 years of mega project litigation, when the end came for SMP, most people would be shocked by it's sudden and shocking swiftness.

It's happening.

Tonight the Finance Comm. is pulling off the table the authorization for $350 million in new short term financing.

Rumor has it that Joel is gone tonight or very shortly (I think it will take longer, but he is gone by the end of the month).

The contract is DOA. A City Council majority is now committed to voting against the contract, if the SMP Board doesn't do it first.

Council is getting buried by angry phone calls and emails, Council Staff are saying they've rarely seen a response like this. Those 110,000 voters who supported I83 are being heard, as are the 94,000 who voted against the monorail. 3 years of pent up, building resentment is boiling over. We are entering a whole new, turbulent phase of debate, about everything to dissolving the Agency asap, rebidding with Bombardier, a revote for new taxes, renegotiating with Cascadia, or whatever. In the end, none of this will happen, both the Council and the State will want to see this end asap. The longer this drags on, the more debt the Agency incurs on a daily basis, the more we have to pay back. Yet, still, are absolutely clueless Mayor softpedaled this on KUOW today. What is this guy thinking. He needs an opponent - now. More on this later. I was just on Dave Ross discussing this. He is absolutely ripping SMP in all respects, as did Dori Monson earlier today. Essex Porter interviewed me today for Ch 7 at 5 and 6 -7 pm. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see the "hearings" next week canceled, though they will likely continue. This is what happens to all poorly run mega projects.

2. Lay odds the tax won't go away -- it will simply shift to the Alaska Way Tunnel project -- we will pay, and pay and pay

Posted by: Lew on June 30, 2005 05:11 PM
3. Whether or not the tax goes away, let's just not spend the money on a boondoggle like this monorail project. We have legitimate transportation needs that should and must be addressed without wasting a ton of dough on a Disneyland ride.

Posted by: Unkl Witz on June 30, 2005 05:14 PM
4. You are right, Lew. This is why the Mayor is being so low key about the whole thing.

Once the monorail is dead and gone, he will shift the tax to paying for his Tunnel of Love. He already had that planned. But, he needs to be careful not to make it look like he killed the monorail just so he could get the money for the his beloved tunnel.

The only way to kill the stupid tunnel is to kill the gas tax.

So, get those petitions in!

5. Too bad the monorail is dead. Now Seattle liberals will be ready for some new tax increase, but next time they'll vote it in for us all, and not just Seattle.

Posted by: Mike on June 30, 2005 05:20 PM
6. Mike -

Thanks to dumbass Horn, we will be paying off the SMP debacle for the next 3 to 4 years. So, don't start spending that money just yet.

7. Shark posted a link earlier today to the Las Vegas Monorail...definately worth checking out. It basically runs from the MGM Grand along the strip to the convention center. There are two additional phases planned, but phase two, going into downtown is now in serious jeopardy and it looks like phase 3 to the airport is almost assuridly not going to happen.

Funny thing is, there was already a monorail running from the MGM to Bally's before Las Vegas decided to build the new one. It already covered about half of what the new monorail covers today.

8. 10 to 1 Seattle figures a way to keep the MVET going and fund more homeless drunk apartments or some other magnificent foolishness.

Good riddance to the Nonorail. Bury it in a potter field with no marker.

9. About damn time!!If that fat thieving socialist Greg Nickels tries to divert the mvet tax to the viaduct then there will be hell to pay.He may be a tax and spend liberal -but I don't think he's that stupid. This is why it is critical that we pass the gas tax initiative-so keep gathering those signatures!!I am also very heartened by the latest poll between Ron Sims and David Irons-I think we can dump this lying crook Ron Sims once and for all. Finally the monorail is done-I'm dancing on it's grave!!

10. The morons at the PI are already pushing for a higher tax to properly fund the monorail.

12. I don't get it. Why doesn't SMA just declare an "emergency" to insulate themselves from the goofy voters of Seattle, and then just issue the bonds to commit the taxpayers? That's King County Politics 101. Why don't they do it? What am I missing?

Posted by: Mark on June 30, 2005 06:35 PM
13. Aw shoot...I agree with Unkl. Not sure how to deal with that. ;-)

Posted by: Danny on June 30, 2005 06:43 PM
14. Danny - My reaction exactly! I had to double check the email link for Unkl Witz to see if someone else might have posted that.

Will wonders never cease?

(Is that really you, Unkl?)

15. Hey Unk
for once I agree with ya.

Remember 1-695 ? It took the MVET off the books, I guess we need a new one for Seattle

16. tick tick tick; how long the payroll for the monorail gang; bene's? golden parachute exits? Let's get THIS story told; how much cost to taxpayers to cut & run after a FUBAR?

That's okay, the PI is gonna go the way of the monorail soon anyway -- and good riddance. Let those myopic pompus fools find real jobs...

18. General Information, Inc., The Seattle Commons, The SMP. Yet another Joel Horn project going down in flames. And yet win or lose, he continues to draw a high salary.

I remember when he was overheard boasting when he first took on the Commons project. Not because of what he thought it would do for the city, but rather because of the fact that it was so controversial and would be tied up in litigation for ten years while he drew a fat salary. And we know exactly how that chapter ended. Just brilliant.

I'm glad that people eventually see through his crazy schemes, but I am always baffled as to why it takes so long so see that the emporer is naked.

19. Even Shrambo is leaping from the Nonorail.

Posted by: JCM on June 30, 2005 08:18 PM
20. Mr. Grabbit -- quite simple: people in Seattle do not think too deeply about anything.

Posted by: Lew on June 30, 2005 08:18 PM
21. Hey gang...

I know this is going to be a shock, but us 'tax and spend liberals' want a good bang for our buck too. And the MONOrail ain't it.

Surely we can do better coming up with a comprehensive solution to our transportation problems than this.

Now how 'bout we get down to shucking the partisan labels and finding something that really works for our beloved city.

22. OMG. Has hell frozen over? Several of us find ourselves now agreeing with Unkl Witz. Will miracles never cease :-)

23. Grabbit; you forgot Horn also finagled the scam with Amazon getting the sweetheart deal (in his brief private sector interude)

Posted by: righton on June 30, 2005 09:11 PM
24. You are right on, righton. His circle of buddies keep helping him into these schemes.

About 15 years ago, I worked for a company that he ran. He is a very charismatic and persuasive leader. And he is very loyal and kind to his staff. But he cooks up these zany ideas that are all but guaranteed to fail. And there is never a shortage of people willing to go along with the scam.

It's not whether you win or lose, it's for how long you play the game and draw a salary.

Posted by: Mr. Grabbit on June 30, 2005 09:24 PM
25. Grabbit--
Badda-bing; my thoughts exactly; fade to dark; curtain closes; yet we deposit our salary and other perks to start anew; no penalties, just another round on that taxpayer twirling thing (puke machine) at the playground; who's REALLY laughing in the end...?

It's dead - from the get go - hi ho! hi ho! hi ho!.....

(Deborah now can lower her soapbox one step...on to the next issue of wasted tax dollars!....Did I mention that NO ONE hestiated to sign my No More Gas Tax initiative form?)

32. Mayor Greg Nickels said the board had "done the right thing."

I find it hard to believe that no one is willing to run against Mr. Greg "Staypuft" Nickels. He is like a twisted superhero with one mighty hand a rubber stamp and the other shifty and deep in our collective pockets.

33. Wow...Geof definately called it. Good source Shark.

34. Sounds like Mr. Grabbit knows Joel Horn "up close and personal". He has watched him for many years from the sounds of it, and the pattern is solid. As I've said before, on several threads, he is the promoter / tailor for the emporer. I agree with Grabbit . . . the emporer is naked for the world to see. Just take off the rose colored glasses. But . . . Joel Horn will emerge to work on yet another pie-in-the-sky project. Maybe Mrs. Gregoire has a place for him. Meanwhile, I hope he has Paul Allen's phone number on his speed dial. Final thought . . . I imagine Joel handles his own fortune better than he does our money.

Posted by: lksimstrailgrammy on June 30, 2005 10:35 PM
35. Well I hope Horn isn't currently headed over to 'help' Sound Transit! (unless it's to sink that one, too)

Posted by: Michele on June 30, 2005 10:38 PM
36. Brilliant idea, Michele. Let's put him in charge of CAO, tent cities, and trails . . the viaduct, roads, all of the bad projects. He has the kiss of death affect!

Posted by: lksimstrailgrammy on June 30, 2005 10:46 PM
37. Oops . . . I forgot to say the most important thing. Shark can take a huge bow for bringing down the monorail, singlehandedly. Yet another debt of gratitude. Too bad he can't cash that at the bank. He's the greatest, though. Tireless, unrelenting, a caped crusader. Let's hope he can do the same thing for the idiotic trail in my yard, the tent cities, the rural land grabs, the viaduct . . . there must be more. Go for it Shark . . . we're here to encourage you . . . and drop $$ in the tip jar.

38. Shark can take a huge bow for bringing down the monorail, singlehandedly

Let's not get carried away. I had very little to do with the Monorail's (hopefully soon) demise.

39. Humble, as always. The truths you bring to light empower all of us to put pressure where it needs to be applied. It has to start somewhere, and your blog is the genesis of many great plans and strategies! Thank you so much.

40. Unkl Witz,

No shock whatsoever. While I agree whole heartedly with your “comprehensive solution to our transportation problems” remark, I find it amusing that you suggest that shucking “Partisan labels,” would somehow help. “Tax and spend liberals'” are the problem not part of any putative cure.

However, I am sure that we would all listen raptly to your suggestions and regard them with the attention they deserve.

Do tell.
