Political Analysis

A reader posted this comment to my "Nixon Impeached, Resignation Expected" entry of late last night. It's worth displaying more prominently:

Regardless of the outcome of the trial, Handy Nixon's testimony today revealed the most appalling set of actions of any election officials in the entire 2004 election miasma.

(Yes! Even more appalling than the outright, admitted falsification of a report by Nicole Way and Garth Fell, two mid-level King County elections managers, and the fraudulent submission of that report to the canvass board without explanation by Elections Superintendent Bill Huennekens. And you thought that creation and proffer of false and fraudulent documents related to a federal and gubernatorial election was as bad as it could get? Think again!)

Handy Nixon admitted that when legitimate questions about numeric discrepancies between ballots cast and voters participating were raised by one popular blog (SP), one lone honest reporter at the Times (Keith Ervin), and one knowledgable King County Councilmember (David Irons) which in turn, generated more honest questions from other press, elected officials, and the public, that the following activity was set in motion:

Rather than devoting time and energy to discovering the source of the discrepancy and either correcting it or fully reporting the effect of the problem on the results, an activity that would have done a lot to redeem these election officials in the eyes of the public, Handy Nixon assembled a huge committee of election officials statewide to publicly support King County in their accounting flaws, to agree to mouth the same identical message to the press and the public, and to create the disingenuous and manipulative "talking points" that included among other things, the patently false claim that voter crediting had "nothing" to do with absentee ballot reconciliation in King County.

I sincerely hope that the names of the Hall of Shame Auditors who participated in this cover-up will be noted by voters in their home counties, and that they will be sent packing next election. (Some of these jokers are up for election this fall, folks!)

Sadly, none of the "real journalists" covering the trial seemed to have picked up on this. Let's repeat: we now know that Nixon Handy helped organize a disinformation campaign to counter legitimate and correct criticism of the state elections system. If the reporters and editorial boards were doing their jobs, this would be front page news and the editorial pages would be demanding Handy's resignation.

1. So was SOS Reed aware of this disinformation campaign? Is it possible he didn't know of the effort by Handy and county auditors? Get a rope! Make it at least 2 ropes.

2. Maybe I can help kickoff some discussion here in light of the reports tonight that the D's will rest their case tomorrow. That may mean 2 things. One is they are very confident or two, they believe they are sunk. Wouldn't you think they would have put on a more vigorous defense?

At any rate, congratulations to all of you for your contributions- I've really enjoyed reading most of them!

3. Attention Pierce County readers. Pat McCarthy is up for attempted reeletion in 2006.

An unrepentent Logan apoligist, she's going to be squarely in my sights as one of the many Legislators and other Bureaucrats who are going to take the fall for their actions and failures as our elected representatives.

If you live in the 27th and are sick of being poorly represented, drop me a line. Help me get active in making it very clear to Tacoma's voters that we need some changes in 2006.

4. The Dems are resting their case tomorrow because they keep getting mangled on cross. Like everything else in this election, the Dems are much more about damage control than anything else.

5. Danny @ 6:45pm

Yes, Sam Reed knew of this activity. Nick Handy testified yesterday that Sam was aware of the coordination being done.

Handy also testified that Sam drew the line at placing the "crediting has nothing to do with reconciliation" talking points on the OSOS website. Sam cited the upcoming litigation as a factor in that decision.

Three months later, Sam Reed would testify in his deposition that crediting of absentee ballots was indeed part of reconciliation, both as a practical matter and undr state law.

6. Shark, Could you post their names; make it almost as recurring as your request for poll workers.?

Posted by: righton on June 1, 2005 07:35 PM
7. Shark, can you post those that are part of the "committee of election officials statewide to publicly support King County"
Thanks

8. And what, pray tell, was Danny Westneat's role in this whole thing? Investigative journalist, or MSM stooge?

9. Larry, showing your naivete.

Some dude w/ column on local section of seattle paper; whaddya think. Used to be Jean Godden's slot. YOu looking for Michael Savage?

Thank goodness radio can work w/ more than 2 stations, otherwise we'd be toast, relegating to only this blog.

11. Sorry, I just can't resist...

I guess for the Dem's, this time around a Nixon came in quite Handy. ;-)

12. Stefan,
I have come to the conclusion that the main stream media are doing their jobs... sadly the job description has changed quite a lot.
It is no longer important to defend the truth and to point out wrongdoing by our politicians.
But the new job is to further a political agenda, and the truth be damned. This is the case not only in their lack of objective reporting on the gubernatorial mess, but in almost every editorial, and from "guest columnists" invited to spew their own particular flavor of the ultra liberal elitists that are rampant particularly in King county, but in other areas of the state as well. Sadly, this is what we have in print media today. The real story is missed. What are these people of influence up to?

13. Stefan--
I would not doubt for a second that it was Nick Handy who orchestrated that SUPPORT DEAN LOGAN letter drafted by Sideshow Bob Terwilliger and peddled by County Auditor Assoc President (and former Cantwell and Murray worker) Corky Mattingly.

Do you still have that Mattingly e-mail where she said "we were requested" to send ridiculous circle the wagons letter. No one ever found out from Mattingly who requested it.

It was a stunning mystery...I'm beginning to get a clear picture of the likely culprit...Mr. Handy.

14. There are several things that I do not understand regarding this process .... like, where is Ron Simms? Anyone want to bring me up to date?

15. Editor - This was an awesome post thanks for moving to the front page.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer but I play one on a blog :)

Wouldn't the D's have been better off to rest and present no case? I have listened to virtually all testimony and really can't think of anyone that has helped the D's case significantly.

16. I agree with you TommyGun. Seem like every witness the dems have brought to the stand has hurt them. Especially the persons involved in the election. After watching them preform it just looks like they don't know as much as they should about running an election. Thereby, making it look very likely that they screwed things up.

It's like that old saying, "It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you are an idiot, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

17. I think we need to get rid of few of the elected auditors in the 2006 elections--especially Yakima, Franklin, Kittitas. These are Republican counties and yet their Auditors supported Yakima County Auditor Corky Mattingly's obsequious attempt to get all the auditors to sign a letter of support for Dean Logan. Let's especially target Mattingly. She's the last elected Democrat in Yakima--a county that went for Rossi by 30 points! We shouldn't go after simply because she's Democrat...We should go after her because she supports the "election community" over honest and fair elections. I hope someone from Yakima County is reading this.

18. The only defense the democrats really put forward was the poor me defense, it is so much, it is so hard etc....whine whine whine. Nothing to refute all those illegal votes and certainly nothing to show they don't exist.

The only question left for the judge is what to do about it.

19. Don't forget Whitman County Auditor Eunice "there are about 5 million election laws we DO know; 783 mishandled provisional ballots" Coker. She is the one that wanted to buy an advertisement so the "whole letter" would go in and none of it cut, because she "knows" how newspapers work. Whitman County is a (barely) Republican county and I believe she is a Republican. Why she would support this joker is beyond me.

20. what a shame the old media aren't on the ball with this. I continue to be amazed at what I learn here and a few other blogs that I'd never, ever find out if I relied on newspapers/TV alone. They don't really begin to cover all this adequately; and it's only the news event of the decade!

21. I'm following, but finding it harder and harder to type with that anti-ACLU t-shirt ad on the right side of the page. Who's with me on that? Deb.....Michele, is that you modeling that fine piece of fabric?

22. This trial has had more small twists and turns!
It reminds me of a wrestling match. One party can score points just by not getting pinned.

The Republicans certainly have scored more with the Judge in regard to objections, arguments, relevancy and the use of time with their presentations..(with the exception of the deposition skit in the beginning days..)
The Democrats however, have been quite annoying to the Judge with their constant unfounded objections, their long-winded rhetorical questioning of witnesses, their irrelevant lines of questioning,
their angry tones used with the Republicans witnesses, and their combative attitude with the Petitioners themselves!
Burman - was down-right hostile towards Braden today and brought on a verbal spanking from the Judge!

The Judge, taking it upon himself to question Nicole Way and Dean Logan, was revealing his need for clarification in their testimonies. Something bothers Judge Bridges about Nicole Way's testimony and Dean Logan's attitude toward the problems in King County....and I don't think their answers to his direct questioning satisfied him!
I don't think the Judge had much patience for Mr. Adolph either! I think the longer the Dems had him on the stand the more annoyed the Judge became..

The most important part of the trial so far - to me - is that the Judge is asking the right questions and allowing the right testimony and cross-examination and ignoring the nonsense objections..

Overall.....I am confident!

They'll say anything, anything at all. The actual facts don't matter.

I can't believe I voted for Democrats all those years.
