The Former Attorney General is giving a pay-off to her non-U.S. citizen voters:
Realistically, our society will probably never form consensus on how to deal with illegal immigration. We're not going to close the borders, we're not going to deport large numbers of people and we're not going to legalize all of the immigrants who are now here illegally. We should do more to control the number of illegal immigrants that arrive and stay, as well as allow more immigrants to come legally. But at the very least, we need to ensure that those who are here, legally or otherwise, become assimilated into American society and more than anything make sure that the children become proficient in English as quickly as possible. The very last thing we want to do is to spend public funds to perpetuate a separate language community. Of all the stupid things that Gregoire has done in her term as fraudulent governor, this is one of the most reprehensible and destructive. Posted by Stefan Sharkansky at May 18, 2005 12:25 PM | Email ThisGov.Former Attorney General Christine Gregoire and Terry Bergeson, state superintendent of public instruction, yesterday joined Mexico’s President Vicente Fox and others in launching a web site and online resources that will allow 55,000 Latino students in Washington to take school classes online in Spanish. The curriculum, which will include basic literacy and high-school-level subject matter that can apply toward graduation, has been produced in Spanish by the government of Mexico.
Using a curriculum produced by a foreign government?! What else do you think will be different about the curriculum besides its language?
Posted by: Shannon K on May 18, 2005 12:47 PMWhat I have a BIG problem with is letting Mexico create the curriculum. Mexico is not known for its ability to educate, except when it comes to providing instructions to people illegally entering the US. Worse, their curriculum is full of propoganda, much like the Soviet Union, which is left over from the days of the PRI running the country. All the people developing the curriculum today are the same people that developed it when the PRI was still in power.
Gregoire is a fool, or worse, she hates America and everything it stands for, if she is funding the education of immigrants from Mexico with curriculum developed IN MEXICO.

Anybody who paints the world in such white and black strokes is a fundamentalist based on belief..not on facts. That is the scary scenario that always plays out in disaster (check your history books).
This website fuels the same type of fanaticism that we fought in WW2 and supposedly in Iraq. When one is part of it, they don't see it.
Hope that helps explain my postings.

What would I get in Mexico if I snuck in there? How does this square with taxpayers and seniors who contributed to the system all these years?
What a travesty. Dry up the well and they will go home on their own volition. Their first act on my soil was to break the law. Ends justify the means? A trepasser can be arrested on my front lawn--why does this get a blessing? Arrrgghhh!!!
PC pandering will be the death of my country.
P.S. the answer is NOT to have more government control on them, in case you were going to say that they could help control the price.
Posted by: Fred on May 18, 2005 02:16 PMMaybe Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton should have been invited to the video teleconference announcing this innovative curriculum ...
Why can't we produce a Spanish language curriculum in the United States? After all, we have tens of millions of residents -- including many millions of citizens -- whose first language is Spanish. And Spanish is by far the most popular foreign language for our native English speakers to learn.
So we are going to have U.S. history courses written by Mexicans? I don't think Mexicans would very much appreciate Americans -- even those of Mexican ancestry -- writing courses in Mexican history for use in Mexican classrooms.
I would much rather have our education resources devoted to teaching Spanish (and other foreign languages) to native English speakers, and teaching English to native Spanish (and other foreign language) speakers.
Every child in our public school system -- regardless of whether or not they (or their parents) are here legally -- deserves the opportunity to learn and become proficient in English. This won't happen if all the necessary classes for graduation are available in some foreign language.

Let me think... How can we solve the Social Security problem without raising taxes....????
Gee!
One solution would be to open the borders to everyone to help foot the bill...What a novel solution.
Hmmmmmm? Maybe that's why the government is not doing anything to stem the flow!!!
But long term we need to raise the F.I.C.A limit to 'unlimited' and also the age to 70 so we don't re-experience this problem.
Maybe there is an undisclosed agenda here!
Posted by: timman on May 18, 2005 03:41 PMSimultaneously, she panders to a traditionally Democrat constituency, which will win her votes and support, and for the Democrats in general. And, she further oppresses this constituency as a second class minority, less fluent in English, and more subserviant to immigrant bosses, unions bosses, more fluent English speaking family members, and the state of WA and any other programs conducted in Spanish.
Talk about building a base.
Gregoire is the worst kind of statist, leftist, Clinton Democrat.
We'll all keep the pressure on this monster to limit and/or expose the damage she does to Washington.
Posted by: Jeff B. on May 18, 2005 04:20 PMNo need to continue hiring ESL (English as a Second Language) staff for the public schools!
No more sneaking illegal immigrants kids into our public schools twice a year to infect our kids with TB and God knows what else!
I wonder what this does to our taxpayer funded tuition for illegal immigrants in the universities?
I think this action with (recently outed racist) Vincente Fox - combined with Gregoires reported *racist* past....should make people of color in this state...very concerned!
Posted by: Deborah on May 18, 2005 04:28 PMAn earthquake with the strength of 9.1 on the Richter scale has hit Mexico. Ten million Mexicans have died and over a million are injured. The country is totally ruined and the government doesn't know where to start with providing help to rebuild. The rest of the world is in shock.
Canada is sending troops to help the Mexican army control the riots.
Saudi Arabia is sending oil.
Other Latin American countries are sending supplies.
The European community (except France) is sending food and money.
The United States, not to be outdone, is sending Ten million replacement Mexicans.
God Bless America.
How about this: My city has a supposed 6% poverty rate per US Census. My school newsletter pegs the free/reduced lunch & breakfast usage rate at over 30%. Now--deducting the legal citizens on hard times, what does that leave? How is my math--is that a 500% or 5:1 rate differential? My explanation? Guess.

Posted by: alphabet soup on May 18, 2005 07:20 PMOpen Border Policy and National Security
There has been much concern lately about our borders. Specifically, our southern border with Mexico. We are bordered on the south by a country that has decided its 'ok' to illegally enter into our country. To substantiate this accusation of border-jumping, I suggest you read "GUÍA DEL MIGRANTE MEXICANO".If you're like me and don't speak or read Spanish, I've got good news. I've put together a translated version of this comic book. You can find it here. This comic book is packed full of really good information. Unfortunately, if the (Mexican) Secretary of Exterior Relations was really concerned with helping Mexican Citizens to immigrate into the U.S., they would have explained how to do it legally... not illegally!
With the Mexican government openly advising and aiding its citizens on how to enter into and remain in our country illegally, I really think Gov. Gargoyle (sp?) should reconsider her position with Mexico. I know I don't appreciate being "milked" by anchor babies, etc.
Posted by: Don Bangert on May 18, 2005 07:42 PMWait--did I remember that our latest state budget had about $300k in assistance to illegal aliens for family planning in eastern WA counties?
Hmmm...Let's ask the Magic Eight Ball for the answer: "Who is more entitled?" Crime victims or illegals? Eight Ball says: "Some liberals would argue that they are one in the same."
Posted by: Jimmie-howya-doin on May 18, 2005 09:19 PMFive thousand years ago, the Chinese built a wall. They built it to keep out the foreigners. They had no backhoes. They had no bulldozers. They had no steel or electricity or internal combustion engines whatsoever. But they built more miles of stone wall than we would require to secure our own southern border. They didn't make excuses. They made a wall.
Today, with cheap chain-link fencing; power tools; inexpensive motion detectors, infrared sensors and web cams; we make excuses instead of walls. But we, unlike the ancient Chinese, have no need to post an infantryman with a spear or bow every hundred yards. With modern technology and a bare modicum of imagination on how to use it, we can indeed secure our borders.
Imagine three parallel chain-link fences, each about a hundred yards from the next. Imagine cheap web cams, bought in bulk quantities, attached to the innermost two of those fences, and software designed to spot changes in the image scanning constantly for intruders. Imagine a small Quick Reaction Force (a Humvee or two with tazers and machine guns) eveny ten miles, often patrolling at random times and on random routes. Imagine a more substantial force (a couple of troop-laden Balck Hawk helicopters) every hundred miles. At this point, a journey into El Norte is no longer simply a trek across twenty miles of desert, but of necessity, a carefully-planned military operation.
Now imagine subjecting employers who knowingly employ illegals to stiff fines. Imagine a minimum sentence for illegal entry of 90 days of turning large rocks into small rocks with a sledgehammer, instead of simply asking them to appear before a federal judge and letting them go free, never to be seen again, as they do today. Imagine giving out a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest of any illegal alien. Imagine cutting off all federal funding of all types for jurisdictions whose law enforcement officials do not actively help in finding and catching illegals.
This problem may never be completely solved to perfection, but cutting out 99% of it isn't a bad start. And then, whatever guest workers are willing to register on THEIR side of the border and be subjected to close scrutiny while in our country, may certainly be brought in -- as many as OUR economic needs persuade us to accept. After the border is secure.
Here is a thought.
If it is AMERICA that is EVIL, why are the ILLEGALS and the TERRORISTS crossing the borders by the droves!? Hmm?
I think most people in the State, Country and world are afraid your extremist, viewpoint and agenda to stamp out any discenting opinion is what is most worrisome.
When has isolationism ever been successful?
Posted by: who'dathunk on May 19, 2005 07:28 AM
In fact, perhaps we can go a step further with this. We could outsource the education of illegal immigrants entirely to Mexico. We would only bear the cost of transporting them to Mexico.
Posted by: DeadManVoting (aka Iguana) on May 19, 2005 09:30 AMAnd no one is talking about isolationism here...just securing our borders from ILLEGAL immigration...you object to this?
Posted by: Blueknight on May 19, 2005 03:17 PMAre YOU willing to sponsor (pay for) the illegals & board them in your house? I'll bet a trespasser on your property helping himself to your refrigerator contents would be met with a 911 call or perhaps your pistol.
Why are illegal aliens sneaking into America any different than a stranger sneaking in to your backyard or your home? Do you feel comfortable with that scenario? I don't.
Who cares what "noble intent" they have--illegal is illegal. They should get in line the right way & wait their turn. It's a simple idea--it's not hate-mongering nor bigotry.
Do you stroll uninvited onto your neighbors' properties anytime you wish and make use of their possessions? I think not.
