"Policy Wonks with Guns"

My column in this week's The Stranger is up!

The biggest blast (literally) I had last weekend was when I went target shooting with a bunch of Young Republicans.
Read the whole thing.

If you're interested in hooking up with the Young Republicans, check out the King County YR website!

1. Stefan, did you shoot with your right hand? If so, your jerking the trigger, and I'm told Glock triggers have a tendancy to make the problem worse. I have the same problem with mine (A buddy who's a shooting instructor is going to help me with the problem next time he's in town). But, if you're a new shooter, and they all hit the target, not too bad. Glad you enjoyed the shooting sports =)

2. Stefan,

Very nice. Target shooting is a lot of fun. I bet you found out that the guns don't go off all by themselves like Democrats think they do.

I might have to check out the YR.

3. Yeah, with Glocks, you have to pull the trigger all the way back to Kirkland before they go off. Not necessarily a bad thing, just a bit different.

4. Sorry that this comment is off topic, but was wondering if SP will be mentioning the http://www.nonewgastax.com site that is generating a lot of interest. Seems like a great way to send a message to Olympia.

5. Stefan

Since Jeff B here brought it up.Why don't you
ask your pal vance what possesed him to send
out a letter praising the 7-8 republicans
that voted in favor of the gas tax.

once again I'm going to tell you
I speak the the truth.I can backup
everything I just said.I have a copy
of the letter and its legit.

When a leader of a state political party
sends out a letter like this.He is acting
an iresponsible manner.this should not
tolerated by the state central committee.

6. Speaking of off-topic ;'}

Phil: Hey buddy, Is that Iambic Pentameter Prose?!!

I'm
just curious
if you type it out
that way strictly on purpose?
Ya know what I mean there, Vern?!!!!

7. Stefan, did Spokane's Mayor go with you on your shooting expedition. I am sure he would just 'love' an expedition with all the 'young' republicans.

Posted by: jpgee on May 5, 2005 05:40 PM
8. oh jpgee, that was horrible.
Do you wonder why the Spokesman-Review put a copywrite their front-page stories? I've never seen that done before in print.
Say what you will about Jim West, but you have to admit he cleaned up several messes in Spokane.

9. CC, you are absolutely right. He has done some fine things for Spokane,

10. Ahhh...Stefan...Bless Ya. Welcome to the world of powder and flame.

You see, we shooters are not a bunch of nuts--heck--who in their right mind would spend decent $$ and time/care AND (perhaps) register to carry, only to do an impulsive "drive-by" shooting because we are mad at our ex-whatever's ??!!

I love JeffB's comment--Me? I think the real reason is knowing you can protect your family/loved ones from mayhem in the streets from some 'unpopular' court verdict ('can't we get along')or riots from natural disaster, or WTO looters or whatever that causes some normal folk to snap and become monsters; If there be an 'invasion,' it will be us turning on each other in panic, not some invading army at the shore.

11. I also had a problem of hitting down and to the left. I had to adjust my point of aim up and right (the right shoulder) and I would hit the target dead center.

12. I'm glad to hear that Wades seems to have gotten its act together since a woman shot her instructor, when the torque from her gun, allowed her hand to go backwards. He was, of course, standing behind her, the logical place to be; but the gun was still going off and he died. This was in 1999 or 2000, as I recall. He was not an employee of Wades; and yes, stuff happens. But a range has some responsibility.
I am also glad all your shots hit only the target. I don't think anyone gets worse; so go back. Glocks are supposedly among the best, if not the best. But no gun does well without a good shooter.

13. Terry, I think I remember hearing about that. If I remember right, some idiot decided it would be funny to give his petite lady friend who had never shot before either a .357 mag or a .44 mag. Needless to say, the recoil from the first shot caused the gun to fly back while she was holding it and she flinched, pulling the trigger again and shooting him in the head. I wouldn't blame Wade's for something an idiot customer did. I've shot there several times, and it's always been a REALLY tight ship that they run.

14. It was a .44 Mag., it was an accident, and Wades is #1 range and shop. It has a wonderful gunsmith too. And it is family friendly that offers classes of all kinds.
More people have died on the football field or the boxing ring than at all the ranges in Washington state, maybe the nation.

The shooting sport has all kinds of shooters, democrats, republicans, independents and the 'I dont vote' type.
Glocks are a great gun, long pull, but very nice. But nothing says 'Bang' like a Colt .45 ACP, or 'Boom' like a .357, .41 or .44 mag, and there are lots of the 'Kaboom' guns out there.

But nothing speaks louder than six in the ten ring as with practice, practice, practice. So go to the range and have a great day of safe fun.

(Safe shooter since 1960 - '0' accidents)

15. I just received my latest issue of the BIAW.

With all the tax issues, one item I hadn't heard of was the caving in by Boeing on unemployment insurance.

Most of us in the building industry know we are in a seasonal system so we believe that a person deserves unemployment based upon their yearly salary- or the one year average.

The legislature just changed it back to a 1/2 year average for computing benefits. Seems Boeing caved at the last minute even though every other business in Washington wished for the 4 quarter average. Interesting reading and would be excellent topics in future blogs.

www.BIAW.com or e-mail Tom McCabe at tommm@biaw.com for further info.

Or, you can e-mail me (my e-mail address you have is my real one) and I can scan the pages and send back.

Title, "Legislature launches attach against business" and "What happened to the Boeing of yesteryear?" and "Staying faithful seems to be a big problem for Boeing".
