My latest column in The Stranger is up!
Put away the John Grisham. This week's best beach thriller is the 436-page transcript of King County Elections Director Dean Logan's deposition in the election contest lawsuit.Read the whole thing.
The other weekly alternative newspaper also has an article about the election meltdown: "THE ELECTION THAT WON'T DIE!". I'm quoted, but not by name.
Fifteen days after the Nov. 2 election, Logan certified it—as required by law, he says. "Not true!" shouted a Shoreline audience member.Logan wasn't, of course required to certify the election unless "they can be ascertained with reasonable certainty", which they could not have been, by his various admissions. Ron Sims might say I lack "good home training" for correcting Dean Logan in public, but is it better to correct a public official who is making a false statement or better to let the misinformation stand? I think its time to take the gloves off and demand an accounting and investigation of negligance and fraud.
Posted by: Karl on April 28, 2005 03:02 PMJeeeze, turning us into Stranger readers...not their normal demographic, one would imagine.
Whoda thunk it? But then again, how many thought that our governorship would still be in question?
Didn't think so.
Posted by: scott158 on April 28, 2005 03:42 PMNo question there. Christine Gregoire IS the governor and will be until at least 2008.
No rational people are questioning the election results.
Posted by: Nelson on April 28, 2005 03:56 PMDon't give into Blog Fraud!
Go ask any 20 random people on the street who the Govenor is, and guess what the answer you will get will be?
Posted by: JDB on April 28, 2005 04:10 PMyou're not funny, and not even effectively annoying. too inane for that.
more like mildly improbable elevator music. Like the muzak version of “Imagine” or singing “the Impossible Dream” at a wedding.
Why anyone would choose to float on the margins like flotsam and jetsam is beyond me.
Don't give in to your impulse to throttle Nelson.
Remember, stupidity is not illegal.

Posted by: karl on April 28, 2005 04:22 PMI seriously doubt if you know 20 people, and if you do, they've probably gone years without hearing/reading something outside the myopic msm.
You can't even ask an honest question without couching it with a false premise. Who sits in the gov chair? CG Who actually probably won the seat? Rossi.
But then again, I don't remember you ever trying to make a case that legitimacy actually matters to you. So an honest election result out of KC is not a priority with you.
btw, are you ever going to do that? try to make a case that such foundational principles as honesty, integrity, and accountability are important to you? and if you do, can you do so without trying to excuse KCE's lousy performance without mentioning your fav Rep target de jour?
just curious. seems like a stretch for even your substantial capacity for rationalization.
Posted by: scott158 on April 28, 2005 04:34 PMThat's from Rick Anderson's stuff in this week's Seattle Weakly. I demand a recount. And for this: "As bad as it was here, tens of thousands of people weren't denied the right to vote just because they were black, as happened in [Republican-controlled] Florida four years ago."
John Fund showed that the whines about disfranchised Floridians were bogus BS, aside from a couple hundred rehabbed felons whose names ended up on the wrong list. By contrast, wrote Fund, thousands of unreconstructed felons were allowed to vote illegally. Despite bleats from Jesse Jackson (where two or more cameras are gathered he is with them always), there were no Florida crackers in uniform trying to intimidate the oppressed at the polls.
And why, why do the 'Crats abuse the elderly by balancing their scams on the backs of seniors? A Georgia Democrat said Georgia couldn't require voter ID because some raging granny wouldn't have it. Our Democrats say they can't require ID because grannies won't have it. King County 'Crats attribute the funny little flubs of Election 2004 to poll-watching grannies who meant well.
It's all a variation on the theme of Senator Michael Moore Kennedy, Democrat, who intones that "1-in-5 children in America" is underfed and hungry. Aside from the two kids who starved because Mom was too drunk from her drunk check to feed them, where are they? I demand a recount.
Posted by: sandalista on April 28, 2005 04:38 PMIt's a lazy day, and I've been waiting for my daughter to complete a project.
Posted by: scott158 on April 28, 2005 04:40 PMSix people will say Christine Gregoire. Six people will say Dino Rossi. Eight people will ask you for spare change before answering the question. You'll be sitting next to those eight people when you ride the monorail.
Posted by: Larry on April 28, 2005 04:43 PMI just asked ten people on the street and they confirmed that Gregoire was illegitimately elected and that Dino Rossi should win his lawsuit.
I hope that clears things up for you and everyone else. You heard it hear first!

Posted by: Nelson rocks on April 28, 2005 04:45 PMOuch, wow nice ending to your Stranger column. Back to the mall for Dean.
All Democrats still believing (hint that means you Goldstein) that this was a "model election" should have trouble sleeping because of one word. That word is VERIFY.
Logan was required to VERIFY the election results by the RCW, and he just rubber stamped what crossed his desk. I guess he learned that when he worked for Sam Reed, because that's what the SOS office is required by law to do with the results. Trouble is he wasn't working in the SOS office anymore, he was working at King County Elections and he's the man responsible for the accurate reporting of the ballots and accounting documents handled by his staff.
Garbage in, garbage out. And back to the mall for Logan.
Posted by: Jeff B. on April 28, 2005 05:08 PMThese people have stolen democracy from our county and state. They deserve to be treated with bad home training.
Posted by: DeadManVoting (aka Iguana) on April 28, 2005 05:39 PMI kind of like the Stranger. They had the courage to publish a long essay from Hitchens in favor of the Iraq War, despite that most of their readership opposed the war. They have been adamant opposing the Monorail. They many be very many things, but predictable is not one. And providing a column to Stefan is as unpredictable as it gets.
Sort of "South Park Conservative" at times.
"Spokeswoman Emily Langlie added that it's DOJ policy to neither confirm nor deny whether any investigation is taking place. But she also said that they're looking at all of the court filings in the election contest. I suspect if that any active investigation would only commence after the election contest is settled."
Stefan's article on calling in the US Attorney to investigate is what I have suspected all along.
They wouldn't tell you even if they were currently investigating. I believe that AG Gonzalez has directed some eyes to be on it. Have faith !
Nice work! You made my day.
Posted by: Amused by liberals on April 28, 2005 10:55 PMWalter, if you are referring to Sharkansky's state income tax returns, I would say with certainty they will not be audited at all.
If you are referring to someone else, my apologies for the misinterpretation.
