MEDIA ADVISORY: Gov. Former Attorney General Christine Gregoire will hold news conference Wednesday about Southwest Washington issues
OLYMPIA – April 26, 2005 –Why on the earth would the former Attorney General be giving a press conference about Southwest Washington from Portland? Could it be that she realizes her political career in this state is about to end, and she's setting the stage for a future run for, say, former Attorney General of Oregon?Gov.Former Attorney General Christine Gregoire will hold a news conference at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at the Portland airport to discuss the recently completed Washington legislative session and its impacts on Southwest Washington.

Posted by: Danny on April 27, 2005 12:18 PMStill, it would be fun to start a rumor about it being the first step in moving her operation to a converted tramp steamer anchored off the 12 mile international limit...
...instead of having "pirate radio," we could have the first "pirate governor."
Just for the fun of it, I'm gonna dig out my copy of Steve Goodman's "Lincoln Park Pirates." Seems appropriate somehow.
Posted by: scott158 on April 27, 2005 12:22 PMI'm sure Gregoire will find a lot of kindred spirits in Oregon. Fine with me, I just want her to get the hell out of Washington and never come back.
Posted by: Jeff B. on April 27, 2005 12:24 PMBoasting about gigantic tax hikes and a staggering budget boost just doesn't fit in SW WA. Voters in SW Washington are known for voting down tax frivolous tax hikes and supporting tax limits such as voter approved I-601 which Gregoire and her legislature just undid.
In Portland however, residents voted on themselves a county income tax. Gregoire is much more tax compatible with Portland than WA. They also vote by mail in Oregon, something Gregoire seems to really like.
Posted by: Margaret on April 27, 2005 12:41 PMCan't have it both ways Stefan...you are like most republicans -- ignore the law when it doesn't support you and claim the other side is in violation when it does. Sad.
Posted by: Harry on April 27, 2005 01:05 PMAnd...as many of us in Washington state (and even some of us here in King County) believe, she will shortly be known as the Former Governor of Washington state.
Sorta like how during Nov-Dec Dino Rossi was known as "Governor-Elect Rossi" but then...well, we know what happened to change that, don't we?
Interestingly, a point that I don't see made often is that likely the real reason there was so much Democrat ballot-stuffing and overall shennanigans (sp?) during the run-up to Nov 2nd and for that matter after, was to try to get Kerry elected and Gregoire was just the unlikely beneficiary.
Posted by: Matt on April 27, 2005 01:19 PMBetter question, why hasn't Rossi talked to anyone other than fellow travelers since he lost the election? Think about it, won't you?
Posted by: JDB on April 27, 2005 01:21 PMFunny that the local paper located blocks from the protest didn't report on it, but did manage to cover another gathering by 17 people that took place within a few days of the former AG visit.

By the way, is her schedule still a big secret?

Posted by: Margaret on April 27, 2005 01:23 PMAs I look at the calendar, I see that it has been almost six months since this debacle of an election took place. The democrats never imagined that this topic would still be so much alive and controversial. If it had not been for the unrelenting heat applied by Stephan and the "talk show radios" they may have actually gotten away with this.
I'd be real careful if I were you...that wagging finger of yours might just fall off. If you want to be critical, you might want to select a topic OTHER than respect for the law.
Oh, and give Sally our best, will ya? Thanks.

Posted by: VCRW on April 27, 2005 01:51 PMShe must know something if she considers herself so insignificant that she has to travel out of her jurisdiction in order to get closer to the press so she can get some coverage. Does even the press consider her such a minor figure that they wouldn't cross the river to cover her?
Posted by: Fred on April 27, 2005 01:54 PMYou are usually a bit more literate that you are showing today. Again, where is the media for SW Washington located? Portland? Vancouver does not have a TV station, or a major newspaper. I would think that at least half the posters here are smart enough to understand that. Sure, your hatered gets the better of you sometimes, but take a breath and use your head before you speak.
Of course, if we allow for your logic, how insignificant is Rossi that he was silent for the entire legislative session? You would think if he really thought his eleciton challange stood a chance he would be acting as a shadow govenor, not hiding from press scruitiny.
Posted by: JDB on April 27, 2005 02:05 PMLike her stupid proclamation of drought on March 10th. That was just a pitiful attempt to do something - anything to look gubernatorial.
I don't know about the rest of the state, but in Sammamish it rained for the following forty days and forty nights. To the day... In fact, my backyard is just starting to dry up. But don't tell King Ron - he'll declare it a wetland.
Thanx, Mr. Grabbit. I was just thinking of that "sky is falling" proclamation that the larcenous one made, along with the infamous "520 bridge is falling down" (isn't that a children's song?).
Thank you, temporary governor fraudoire, for bringing a smile to my face!
Actually the big sign in Fife said "Christine Concede". It would be even more appropriate (and funny) to see it flashing up there today.
Posted by: Mr. Grabbit on April 27, 2005 02:25 PMI love that billboard in FIFE. On my way home from the revote rally in Olympia I saw that sign flashing "REVOTE." it was even better than the day it flashed "Gregoire concede."
Posted by: chardonnay on April 27, 2005 02:32 PMIt's appropriate that she support a policy that will ultimately lower the cost of gasoline: rather than 'buy now - pay later', thinking forward she urges 'pay now - save later'.
Either way, the cost of gasoline will rise. It's better to invest in fuel efficient cars and trucks and transit, rather than in more highways and oil refineries and GM's hydrogen fuel cell nonsense.

Posted by: alphabet soup on April 27, 2005 03:21 PMI've always had a fondness for something related to "pretender" to the gov'ship. Or Gardner/Lowry/Locke the younger.
Posted by: scott158 on April 27, 2005 03:52 PMC.Gregoire and Ted Kulongoski may be propping each other up. Gov. TK has lost support even from his fellow liberals - some are calling for primary opponents to run against him next year. He's been tarred with his too-close associaiton with disgraced child molester and former Dem. Gov. Goldschmidt, though he prob doesn't deserve that. He does deserve maximum negative points for playing games with budget proposals, among other things.
CG and TK may be trying to give each other some good press, since they can't get it any other way. The only supporters they have left are a few state employees as far as I can tell.
Posted by: Mac on April 27, 2005 04:59 PMSorry, a real leader makes hard choices that need made, like cutting back on frivolous spending and even travel for herself.
Sort of reminds me of the former State Secretary of Education from about 15 years ago that ran on streamling the education budget and her first act in office was to purchase an $11,000 antique desk for her office. (sorry, can't remember her name, she didn't impress me, even when I met her face to face).
To those that can't handle the titles assigned to this phoney, sorry, but I can in now way call her governor and keep a straight face.
Hypocrites.
Great job at revealing yourself as a complete moron in so few words! You are to be commended. (And pitied)
Posted by: Danny on April 27, 2005 06:03 PMIf you think Kerry really won, start counting votes and start a blog. Nobody's stopping you. However vacant allegations aren't going to get you very far.
Defending democracy is hard work. Move-on is all we heard through March of this year. Our allegations were called vacant until SOMEONE stepped up to the plate. Even now the officials whose job it is to look for criminal wrong doing refuse to investigate when it's clear that the law was broken.
What's stopping you?
Posted by: Andy on April 27, 2005 06:07 PMthe fact is, we keep finding out about fraud in heavily democrat areas---Ohio dem counties, Wisconsin, King County. I'm still waiting for the big Republican county vote fraud scandal to hit. Truth is, it just hasn't happened at this point. But the smoke sure keeps blowing out of democrat strongholds. Undeniable.
Posted by: Michele on April 27, 2005 08:25 PMYes, the revote rally was awesome! The energy of that day was incredible. I am glad to see the passion is just as strong today. And yes, I remember seeing the sign written in Russian. It read:
ГЛАСНОСТЬ ТЕПЕРЬ!
Which is GLASNOST TEPER'! or 'OPENNESS/PUBLICITY NOW!'.
It's something that the citizens of the former USSR eventually got, but we are still waiting for in Washington state.
Posted by: Mr. Grabbit on April 27, 2005 08:35 PMI love it! And don't worry - we won't have to wait until 2008 to get it.
Posted by: Mr. Grabbit on April 27, 2005 08:59 PM"Except as hereinafter provided and notwithstanding any other provision of this Constitution, the aggregate [sum total] of all tax levies [taxes assessed by anyone authorized to do so]upon real and personal property [real estate and goods--anything you can own] by the state and all taxing districts [literally ALL, as defined later] now existing or hereafter created, shall not in any year exceed one percent of the true and fair value of such property in money: Provided, however, That nothing herein shall prevent levies at the rates now provided by law by or for any port or public utility district. The term "taxing district" for the purposes of this section shall mean any political subdivision, municipal corporation, district, or other governmental agency authorized by law to levy, or have levied for it, ad valorem taxes on property, other than a port or public utility district."
It's pretty clear already, actually. There really is no excuse for ignorance or defiance by any of those involved.

Posted by: Puddybud on April 28, 2005 08:10 AMWhile it is true that Vancouver does not have a dedicated TV station (other than say KATU in Portland, etc.), I can assure you as someone who lived there that, yes indeed Vancouver does have its own newspaper, its called the Columbian. All the fellow residents I know prefer it to the Oregonian (the Portland based paper). The only time anyone buys the Oregonian is for the ads in the Sunday paper, to find the best deals when they cross the border for sales-tax free shopping.
BTW, do you really think that the Seattle news org.s don't have correspondents in Vancouver, and Spokane, etc.?
Most everyone I have talked to from Vancouver(other than college students from WSU) view Portland like most everyone outside of King county views Seattle, which is... "nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there"
They (Seattle and Portland) are both over-powered metropolises that bully their neighboring communities with their uber-liberal agendas, and while they do provide jobs and entertainment, its their influence on peoples daily lives even after they go home that causes the disdane.
Portland and Seattle have similar ideologies, whereas a hardworking community (suburb) like Vancouver will maintain its values and rail against figures such as Christine.
I agree with Jeff B. and christmasghost:
IMHO I believe that her vist is most likely two fold; first, she is hoping for some positive press for a SW visit from a sympathetic area, and secondly that she may indeed be looking for another job opportunity from the only other area (regionally) that is arguably more liberal then Seattle/KC once she is booted from the Govenor's mansion in June.
She will have to leave the area in hopes of sustaining her career, not just because she has burnt the people of Washington, but I predict that her support group will come tumbling down(i.e. Sims, Phillips, Logan, Cantwell, et al.)
