Former Attorney General speaks to Vancouver from Portland

MEDIA ADVISORY: Gov. Former Attorney General Christine Gregoire will hold news conference Wednesday about Southwest Washington issues

OLYMPIA – April 26, 2005 – Gov. Former Attorney General Christine Gregoire will hold a news conference at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at the Portland airport to discuss the recently completed Washington legislative session and its impacts on Southwest Washington.
Why on the earth would the former Attorney General be giving a press conference about Southwest Washington from Portland? Could it be that she realizes her political career in this state is about to end, and she's setting the stage for a future run for, say, former Attorney General of Oregon?

1. At a minimum, she's not too bright when it comes to appearances.

Maybe Portland and Seattle can become their own states. You know...North Wacko and South Wacko!

2. More than likely just an interesting factoid.

Still, it would be fun to start a rumor about it being the first step in moving her operation to a converted tramp steamer anchored off the 12 mile international limit...

...instead of having "pirate radio," we could have the first "pirate governor."

Just for the fun of it, I'm gonna dig out my copy of Steve Goodman's "Lincoln Park Pirates." Seems appropriate somehow.

3. So, while she is in Portland, can Brad Owen, as acting governor, undo some of the damage she's inflicted?

Posted by: chunkstyle on April 27, 2005 12:23 PM
4. Portland, one of the only markets in the country where Air America is doing quite well, might just have taken over the title as the most left leaning city in the nation.

I'm sure Gregoire will find a lot of kindred spirits in Oregon. Fine with me, I just want her to get the hell out of Washington and never come back.

5. I know Vancouver has been annex happy, but when did they take Portland? ;)

Posted by: DakotaRed on April 27, 2005 12:26 PM
6. Perhaps she intends to send a message to those Oregon residents who may have voted for her? Or perhaps she wants to avoid another orange protest such as occurred on a Jan. visit to Vancouver, WA.

Boasting about gigantic tax hikes and a staggering budget boost just doesn't fit in SW WA. Voters in SW Washington are known for voting down tax frivolous tax hikes and supporting tax limits such as voter approved I-601 which Gregoire and her legislature just undid.

In Portland however, residents voted on themselves a county income tax. Gregoire is much more tax compatible with Portland than WA. They also vote by mail in Oregon, something Gregoire seems to really like.

7. This is all very easy to understand...the last time she was in Vancouver with much hooplah, our little REVOTE group of about 20 (most of us over 55) gave her a real revote welcome. The next day we heard about death threats, WSP extra protection and no more info on future travel plans. She doesn't want to deal with the same again...and Multnomah Co. couldn't care less!

Posted by: Susu on April 27, 2005 12:42 PM
8. Multnomah county is so liberal, they don't even need to count illegal votes to elect a liberal democrat.

Posted by: PW on April 27, 2005 01:03 PM
9. You lose all credibility by calling her something other than her official title. Doing so shows you have no respect for the law -- yet you bloviate constantly about your interpretation of the law.

Can't have it both ways Stefan...you are like most republicans -- ignore the law when it doesn't support you and claim the other side is in violation when it does. Sad.

Posted by: Harry on April 27, 2005 01:05 PM
10. Harry -- Maybe I'm wrong (I am occasionally) but she is the Former Attorney General isn't she? Do you have a problem with history?

And...as many of us in Washington state (and even some of us here in King County) believe, she will shortly be known as the Former Governor of Washington state.

Sorta like how during Nov-Dec Dino Rossi was known as "Governor-Elect Rossi" but then...well, we know what happened to change that, don't we?

Interestingly, a point that I don't see made often is that likely the real reason there was so much Democrat ballot-stuffing and overall shennanigans (sp?) during the run-up to Nov 2nd and for that matter after, was to try to get Kerry elected and Gregoire was just the unlikely beneficiary.

Posted by: Matt on April 27, 2005 01:19 PM
11. Let's see, she had a press conference at the Portland Airport (right across the river) because..., that is where most of the media for South West Washington is?

Better question, why hasn't Rossi talked to anyone other than fellow travelers since he lost the election? Think about it, won't you?

Posted by: JDB on April 27, 2005 01:21 PM
12. Hey Harry,
Do I lose credibility, in your estimation, when I refer to her a as a worthless POS, as I have done for years. Anything I can refer to 'her highness' as, that will ensure that my credibility with you suffers, just name it and I will be only too happy to oblige you.

13. There were some 30 plus participants of various ages in the revote rally when Gregoire came to Vancouver. (some arrived early and others after work.)

Funny that the local paper located blocks from the protest didn't report on it, but did manage to cover another gathering by 17 people that took place within a few days of the former AG visit.

Posted by: James on April 27, 2005 01:28 PM
16. Gee, I just can't imagine why she would want to hold her self-congratulatory conference across the river. What a laugh.

As I look at the calendar, I see that it has been almost six months since this debacle of an election took place. The democrats never imagined that this topic would still be so much alive and controversial. If it had not been for the unrelenting heat applied by Stephan and the "talk show radios" they may have actually gotten away with this.

17. So if the Governor Pro Tem wants to get press coverage, she has to go where the press is? That's gotta be a first, or a sure indication of how weak, powerless and inconsequential she really is.

18. Hey Harry,

I'd be real careful if I were you...that wagging finger of yours might just fall off. If you want to be critical, you might want to select a topic OTHER than respect for the law.

21. Hey Harry,
I actually supported her, not so much because of her prospects as governor; but because I know and like her husband. Mike is a good man.
That said, I'll never do it again. You are correct, she is the legal governor, but only because the Dems bought a third recount. The reality, however, is there is no legitimacy in this election. And the actions of the legislators (mostly Democrats) stirpped away any honor or integrity from this legislative session.
Portland isn't far enough away.

22. JDB,

She must know something if she considers herself so insignificant that she has to travel out of her jurisdiction in order to get closer to the press so she can get some coverage. Does even the press consider her such a minor figure that they wouldn't cross the river to cover her?

23. Mr. Grabbit . . . it is thanks to the brilliant young minds of you and a host of others, bolstered by the excellent, exhaustive work of Sharkansky and his buddies that this IS still alive and thriving. I hope your generation will continue to take the ball and run toward the goal of taking back America. Talk radio, bloggers, and the faithful . . . . hear hear! Let's turn this country upside down, heading to the right for what IS RIGHT! Meanwhile, where is that wonderful, lighted billboard in Fife? It's time for the re-vote signs and billboard to surface again.

Posted by: lksimstrailgrammy on April 27, 2005 01:59 PM
24. Fred:

You are usually a bit more literate that you are showing today. Again, where is the media for SW Washington located? Portland? Vancouver does not have a TV station, or a major newspaper. I would think that at least half the posters here are smart enough to understand that. Sure, your hatered gets the better of you sometimes, but take a breath and use your head before you speak.

Of course, if we allow for your logic, how insignificant is Rossi that he was silent for the entire legislative session? You would think if he really thought his eleciton challange stood a chance he would be acting as a shadow govenor, not hiding from press scruitiny.

25. Let's face it. Her press conferences never go well. She just can't open her mouth without cramming her foot in it.

Like her stupid proclamation of drought on March 10th. That was just a pitiful attempt to do something - anything to look gubernatorial.

I don't know about the rest of the state, but in Sammamish it rained for the following forty days and forty nights. To the day... In fact, my backyard is just starting to dry up. But don't tell King Ron - he'll declare it a wetland.

Thanx, Mr. Grabbit. I was just thinking of that "sky is falling" proclamation that the larcenous one made, along with the infamous "520 bridge is falling down" (isn't that a children's song?).

Thank you, temporary governor fraudoire, for bringing a smile to my face!

Great idea!!! I still have my big red REVOTE sign. I think it is time for it to go back in my rear window.

I love that billboard in FIFE. On my way home from the revote rally in Olympia I saw that sign flashing "REVOTE." it was even better than the day it flashed "Gregoire concede."

32. Maybe her trip is related to Gov Kulongowski's call to make more strict automobile emission controls? The free market is against that. It's more profitable to pollute and defer full costs onto us middle & low-income peons.

It's appropriate that she support a policy that will ultimately lower the cost of gasoline: rather than 'buy now - pay later', thinking forward she urges 'pay now - save later'.

Either way, the cost of gasoline will rise. It's better to invest in fuel efficient cars and trucks and transit, rather than in more highways and oil refineries and GM's hydrogen fuel cell nonsense.

After the rally, we went to the leg. bldg. to listen to the floor action regarding the phoney acceptance of that woman as (I can't say it) gov-a-ner. They refused us entry, saying that the gallery was "reserved for special people" by order of Gov. Locke. Well, that was true of one side, but not both. We held out, and we finally gained entrance. How? One of our gang made a little sign that said "locked out by order of Gov. Locke" and strutted in front of the press with it. We took pictures. Pretty funny! Instantly we gained admission!

49. Yes, Portland and Multnomah County are every bit as lefty as you all believe. The rest of Oregon is losing patience with our Gov. just as Washington seems to be doing with the GovernorPretend.

C.Gregoire and Ted Kulongoski may be propping each other up. Gov. TK has lost support even from his fellow liberals - some are calling for primary opponents to run against him next year. He's been tarred with his too-close associaiton with disgraced child molester and former Dem. Gov. Goldschmidt, though he prob doesn't deserve that. He does deserve maximum negative points for playing games with budget proposals, among other things.

CG and TK may be trying to give each other some good press, since they can't get it any other way. The only supporters they have left are a few state employees as far as I can tell.

50. Yes, we do have the Columbian down here. Why she wouldn't play to them baffles me. For a fairly small paper, it's about as far left as you can get. They have even printed editorials in support of her "leadership" (gag & barf) for making the "hard choice" of raising so many taxes without even trying to cut state spending.

Sorry, a real leader makes hard choices that need made, like cutting back on frivolous spending and even travel for herself.

Sort of reminds me of the former State Secretary of Education from about 15 years ago that ran on streamling the education budget and her first act in office was to purchase an $11,000 antique desk for her office. (sorry, can't remember her name, she didn't impress me, even when I met her face to face).

To those that can't handle the titles assigned to this phoney, sorry, but I can in now way call her governor and keep a straight face.

Defending democracy is hard work. Move-on is all we heard through March of this year. Our allegations were called vacant until SOMEONE stepped up to the plate. Even now the officials whose job it is to look for criminal wrong doing refuse to investigate when it's clear that the law was broken.

What's stopping you?

56. I think that her reasoning definitely has to do with her warm welcome last time. It's no secret that her support wanes daily--despite fewer numbers of Libs yelling louder to try to cover it up--and she'd likely encounter the same thing as last time if she did it locally. Even unannounced, I imagine. Maybe she's just gonna hide behind the gates so that nobody can talk to her that didn't come on her plane or have an invitation to dinner at "her" mansion that evening.
More important, however, is what the WA Constitution says about nearly everything that was pulled at this last session. Namely, that all of the tax hikes were in blatant defiance or law.
I know, I must have been really bored...I was on a long car trip, and I'd just printed it out for perusal of certain sections, so I thought, "what the heck."
But the point is, it says that any tax total that goes over 1% of the value of any real or personal property annually needs to be voted on by the people before it gets enacted. Not only was that ignored, but it was ignored THREE TIMES IN ONE DAY (Gasoline, Alcohol, and Tobacco). ...And the former Attorney General, who has no excuse not to know this stuff, has said she will sign them all.
What are they trying to pull?

57. I have no problem recognizing Bush as the legitimate winner in 2000. In fact, if you factored out the democrat vote fraud in Palm Beach county and other democrat strongholds, his margin of victory would've been even larger.

the fact is, we keep finding out about fraud in heavily democrat areas---Ohio dem counties, Wisconsin, King County. I'm still waiting for the big Republican county vote fraud scandal to hit. Truth is, it just hasn't happened at this point. But the smoke sure keeps blowing out of democrat strongholds. Undeniable.

Posted by: Michele on April 27, 2005 08:25 PM
58. I might add that a couple years back it was discovered that some 37% of Kern County California democrat registrations were illegal. Some even admitted voting four times because they 'cared more'. Another said "If we didn't cheat, we wouldn't win." as if that justifies all.

63. Sorry for not citing the source more specifically. The actual phrasing, from Article 7, Section 2, [with bracketed definition for some terms]is:

"Except as hereinafter provided and notwithstanding any other provision of this Constitution, the aggregate [sum total] of all tax levies [taxes assessed by anyone authorized to do so]upon real and personal property [real estate and goods--anything you can own] by the state and all taxing districts [literally ALL, as defined later] now existing or hereafter created, shall not in any year exceed one percent of the true and fair value of such property in money: Provided, however, That nothing herein shall prevent levies at the rates now provided by law by or for any port or public utility district. The term "taxing district" for the purposes of this section shall mean any political subdivision, municipal corporation, district, or other governmental agency authorized by law to levy, or have levied for it, ad valorem taxes on property, other than a port or public utility district."

It's pretty clear already, actually. There really is no excuse for ignorance or defiance by any of those involved.

She can go on taxpayer money for her trip expenses, and her purchases will be sans sales tax. Why buy in Washington when she can save a lot of money buying in Oregon? Sales tax adds significantly to the cost of an item.

76. Okay Y'all, see if you remember this:
Bill Clinton standing in Arizona, back toward Utah, touting a bill basically shutting down the coal industry in Utah saying it will preserve the beauty of the state. Keep in mind, Bill placed 3rd in Utah. Plundering Utah was his payback.
The former AG seems to have done the same thing, having plundered Washington now standing in another state, paying us back for placing her second.

77. JDB never has a point about anything -- he's a liberal.
He is one of those people who senselessly keys cars out of spite with stickers he doesn't like, to prove he is superior.
The senseless part is what he likes most.

While it is true that Vancouver does not have a dedicated TV station (other than say KATU in Portland, etc.), I can assure you as someone who lived there that, yes indeed Vancouver does have its own newspaper, its called the Columbian. All the fellow residents I know prefer it to the Oregonian (the Portland based paper). The only time anyone buys the Oregonian is for the ads in the Sunday paper, to find the best deals when they cross the border for sales-tax free shopping.

BTW, do you really think that the Seattle news org.s don't have correspondents in Vancouver, and Spokane, etc.?

Most everyone I have talked to from Vancouver(other than college students from WSU) view Portland like most everyone outside of King county views Seattle, which is... "nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there"

They (Seattle and Portland) are both over-powered metropolises that bully their neighboring communities with their uber-liberal agendas, and while they do provide jobs and entertainment, its their influence on peoples daily lives even after they go home that causes the disdane.

Portland and Seattle have similar ideologies, whereas a hardworking community (suburb) like Vancouver will maintain its values and rail against figures such as Christine.

I agree with Jeff B. and christmasghost:
IMHO I believe that her vist is most likely two fold; first, she is hoping for some positive press for a SW visit from a sympathetic area, and secondly that she may indeed be looking for another job opportunity from the only other area (regionally) that is arguably more liberal then Seattle/KC once she is booted from the Govenor's mansion in June.

She will have to leave the area in hopes of sustaining her career, not just because she has burnt the people of Washington, but I predict that her support group will come tumbling down(i.e. Sims, Phillips, Logan, Cantwell, et al.)
