Bellingham reader Charles Jenkins has a report from last night's Election Reform Meeting in Mount Vernon. My favorite bit:
Reed also stated that re-registration would not be allowed under the Motor Voter Act that had been passed by Congress in 2000. A gentleman from the Evergreen Freedom Foundation presented evidence to the contrary, which he received from correspondence with the Dept. of Justice. This statement was met with a lot of applause, as re-registration was a key issue for many. And check out the rest of Charles' new Whatcom Politics blog, devoted to, you guessed it, politics in Whatcom County! Sideshow Bob [Terwilliger, Snohomish Auditor] drew some laughter when he stated that he had traveled around and met with many of his colleagues around the nation and had come to the conclusion that, "We have one of the best election systems in the nation." Which if true, I find very sad.
It would be nice if the auditors attended these meetings to receive signals from the public, rather than transmit assurances that the elections were the best and most accurate ever... but somehow it feels like the reverse.
