Report from Mount Vernon

Bellingham reader Charles Jenkins has a report from last night's Election Reform Meeting in Mount Vernon. My favorite bit:

Reed also stated that re-registration would not be allowed under the Motor Voter Act that had been passed by Congress in 2000. A gentleman from the Evergreen Freedom Foundation presented evidence to the contrary, which he received from correspondence with the Dept. of Justice. This statement was met with a lot of applause, as re-registration was a key issue for many.

[Whatcom County Auditor Shirley] Forslof was the only Auditor that didn't use her time to publicly commend SOS Reed for a job well done in the last election, although she didn't have anything harsh to say either. Sideshow Bob [Terwilliger, Snohomish Auditor] drew some laughter when he stated that he had traveled around and met with many of his colleagues around the nation and had come to the conclusion that, "We have one of the best election systems in the nation." Which if true, I find very sad.

And check out the rest of Charles' new Whatcom Politics blog, devoted to, you guessed it, politics in Whatcom County!

1. ..and it occurs to me. If, as Dems like to say, felons wouldn't have voted for Gregoire because she was such a force for law and order as AG, she certainly never showed any concern for enforcing the law in regard to removing all the felons on the voter rolls. (c'mon, she knew there'd be some felons in there)

2. As State taxpayers, are we paying for all the County auditors to attend these meetings to provide backup singers for SOS Reed? Or are the Counties paying?

It would be nice if the auditors attended these meetings to receive signals from the public, rather than transmit assurances that the elections were the best and most accurate ever... but somehow it feels like the reverse.

3. TVW is airing Olympia On Call with Pam Roach and Jim Kastama (D)
Talking about the Election Reform Forums, it is very enlightening Pam R claiming that Jim K is the one and ONLY person to decide which of the suggestions from the Election Reform Forums will be discussed on the Senate floor. Purging the voter registration rolls is one that will not even be debated! Seems as though the CG appointed “task force” is nothing more that a political distraction aimed at trying to pacify those who want real reform.
