From the Times, the WA Dem chair is up for re-election:
"I am absolutely certain that if anyone were chair other than myself, Christine would not be governor today because we chased the ballots, we fought the battle in the courts, we fought the PR battle," Berendt said. "Most state chairs would have thrown in the towel at some point, and that was something that we never thought of doing, ever."So he's the one who procured the magical mystery ballots!
Ponder his vaunted PR battle-- all verbatim quotes:
"We don't want to have poor little Republicans going to jail. It's sad." (Regarding prosecution of an older man who submitted his dead wife's absentee ballot, singling out the one Republican example amidst dozens of post mortem Dem votes).I'm torn. On the one hand, I'd like to see him lose, to not have to hear him again. On the other hand, he's helping our cause quite a bit every time he opens his piehole."We couldn't have done it without liberals from throughout the country." (Ostensibly about recount donations, though a possible covert reference to the provisional ballots that bypassed screening).
"I think Vance should double-check with the national Bush-Cheney campaign and the Republican National Committee to make sure they didn't move their computers out of the state in the middle of the night to one of those states where they're fighting a little more vigorously." (Taunting, after the Bush-Cheney HQ in Bellevue was ransacked and 3 computers with voter databases were stolen.)
"His last shot at overturning the election faded today." (Meaning Rossi, spoken on Dec. 29th)
"This is a Karl Rove-driven operation in this state... We are not going to let the Republicans steal this election from Chris Gregoire." (After GOP sued King County because election workers were divining voter intent and then "enhancing" ballots so they could be tallied.)

Posted by: Bleeding heart conservative on January 27, 2005 03:44 PMBerendt did his job. Christine didn't do hers. She ran about as poor a campaign as is humanly possible.
Posted by: Steve on January 27, 2005 04:16 PMTeary-eyed, emotional, always patting himself on the back, doing anything and everything to try to win.
And great looking too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Norm on January 27, 2005 04:16 PMChris Vance is a little stiff by comparison, but at least he has some real-world legislative experience.
Posted by: Insufficiently Sensitive on January 27, 2005 04:25 PMI think Steve is correct, insofar as Berendt/CG. Berendt did see CG installed in the mansion.
From a purely political viewing of the election, Vance failed, while Berendt succeeded. I would guess that is the way this will end up.
The Contest throws a wildcard into the race, though. Party officials from both sides may look to that as a reason for either getting sacked or re-appointed, but my gut tells me Vance is the more vulnerable and will likely fail in his bid...
