Today's front page headline in the Seattle Times: "Gov.-elect says the voters never got to know her"
"I don't think in the end voters ever really got to know Chris Gregoire."Oh, please. More self-deluded claptrap from the same woman who thinks this election was "a model to the rest of the nation and the world". I think the voters got to know Chris Gregoire just fine, which is why her "victory" can only be explained by dead voters, double voters, felon voters, illegally enhanced ballots, unverified provisional ballots, etc. That's what Gregoire says about herself today as she readies to be sworn in Wednesday as the state's 22nd governor.
The astonishing thing to me about this front page Seattle Times story is that even though it acknowledges that "Gov.-elect Christine Gregoire will lack a mandate", it attributes this lack of mandate only to the size of her victory margin. The article is overwhelmingly sympathetic to Gregoire, offering advice how she might solidify her legitimacy in the face of a narrow margin. In its nearly 1,800 words, the article does not once mention the fact that the election is being contested. Nor does it mention that swirling controversy regarding large numbers of illegal votes, irregularities and enough other mistakes to enable a court to nullify the election.
The article could just as easily be written by a Gregoire campaign aide as by a political reporter from a newspaper that prides itself on being "neutral, fair, thorough and thoughtful".

If she got to know herself better, maybe she wouldn't refer to herself by name. Wouldn't ordinary people say "the voters never really got to know me?"
Perhaps she's still in campaign mode, when name recognition is so important that candidates usually refer to themselves by name -- just in case someone listening to them doesn't recognize the face or voice.
If the voters didn't know her well enough after her long time in office as AG and after her campaign for governor, when would they get to know her well enough to decide whether to vote for her or her opponents?
Maybe it takes a large margin of victory for her or her opponent to persuade her that the voters know her well enough -- but I suspect that she wouldn't say so unless the big victory margin was in her favor.

#2. It sells itself to their base constituency, which is predominantly leftivist.
If it had been a real journalistic effort, CG would never have given the interview.
Posted by: smegma on January 9, 2005 01:35 PMI tried to read this public relations piece, but became slightly nauseous. Every time CG talks she seems to ooze arrogance and condescension, but now that I know she came from humble beginnings and is not anti-cat, I feel so much better about her hubris.
I could be wrong, but I just don't see CG as a politic centrist. When she goes on her tour to heal us she wants us to meet her in the middle for a group hug. The middle of what?
Posted by: JG on January 9, 2005 02:44 PM"Politic" I just found out means prudent, wise,
sensible, discreet, judicious.
That does not describe CG, so I guess it works either way.
Just as this country saw John Kerry for what he was, a pompous 'flavorless pudding' who betrayed his country, EVERYONE in WA knew who X-tine Gregoireovich is.
And when she ran for governor, we learned even more--for instance, that she was willing to lie and run an ad with someone pretending to be a republican who endorsed Gregoire; that she was president of a whites-only sorority and wasn't willing to change that policy (and in fact ENFORCED IT) until she was safely graduated and couldn't be kicked out for stirring up 'trouble'; that she tried to manipulate that report on what happened with that $18 million appeal botch;
It's just that when voters got to know her even better, they decided that THEY DON'T LIKE HER!
Posted by: Michele on January 9, 2005 03:20 PMWell, we've gotten to know about her $20 million appeals foul up.
We've gotten to know how she REALLY feels about things like domestic violence, through her handling of the Linda David case.
We've gotten to know how she has failed our children through her continued defense of ALL of DSHS.
Must I go on??? What else do we need to know?
Posted by: SnoCo Voter on January 9, 2005 08:56 PMIt must have been written by GreGore's PR department. What a bunch of schlek!
