1. Gregoire is making a complete mockery of Washington state voters. She can be assured that pursuing a second recount will make her the least popular political figure in the state. I respected and supported her as AG, but she has lost that respect and support with her selfish plans.
Should she succeed in over-throwing the count ... 50% of the voters will feel like she hijacked the election. Making Rossi win 3 times is insane.
Someone should open a CafePress shop with merchandise with slogans like "No Recount", "Third Recount isn't the Charm", "Gregoire isn't my Governor". I'm sure they'd fly off the shelves.
2. I agree: "Dino Rossi is my Governor"
3. Gregoire is taking the usual Dem position of "counting all votes" but similiar to Gore in 2000, my guess is that she really intends to count only the votes in King County. She is making a fool of herself and its time for the Dem leadership to stand up and concede!
4. You tell 'em Cosmo Kramer!!!!
5. Personally, I think Chris would make a great Country-Western chick...
I can see her sittin' behind the wheel of a bright red, over-sized Dodge Ram dually drinkin' cheap warm beer, chewin' tobacco, eatin' jerky and listenin' to Blake Shelton singin' "Some Beach..Somewhere" over & over &over again!!
Maybe the T-Shirt ought to refer to her afterlife...after she reeks a little more havoc.
6. Perhaps she's waiting for a sign or portent- like Nebuchadnezzar, she needs the handwriting on the wall... "Concede, Christine..."
But how about a T-Shirt that reads "Go! Go! Gregoire! And take Gary with you!"
I just don't want anyone to screw up the 42 vote margin- I like that number. Sci Fi rules...
And I'm on a roll- too early, not enough coffee. Any truth to the rumor that Paul Berendt was seen at Mt St Helens, trying to forge one ring to rule them all?
7. Suppose that the next recount shows the Rossi lead cut further to 23 votes and then another cuts it down to 17 votes. All of these the Democrats will call "ties" and each logically for them argues for yet more recounts. The purpose of an election is to bring finality to the decision-making process. Rossi is now, not technically but litterally, the governor-elect. Twice the counties of the state have counted all their votes and twice he has a majority. The burden to overturn this decision is on the challenger to show very good cause why there should be a third count of the ballots regardless of who pays for them.
If only certain counties are counted again, you are right back to the same equal protection and due process arguments in the 2001 Florida recount case of Bush v. Gore. Only there was also an additional flaw because the Florida Supreme Court kept changing the rules of the game after it had been played.
The official presumption must now be that Rossi is governor-elect no matter if by 42 votes or by one vote. Now that King County "found" thousands of new ballots in the first round and "divined and enhanced voter intent" from more than 700 votes in the recount, one has to think about Theresa LaPore in Broward County, Florida in 2000. As Sen. Dole put it, she was not counting ballots, she was casting them--90 percent for Gore.
If King County election officials are so incompetent as politicians that they could not invent enough Democratic votes the first time, they should not be enabled further now that they know exactly how many votes they need to overturn.
I come from Cook County, Illinois originally, it is time for Republicans in Washington to stop being so polite as to pretend vote fraud does not happen. It does and a third recount of only some counties creates the ideal circumstances for vote fraud to flourish.
8. Mark-
First, one more recount, at most. State law does not allow more than two recounts, and we just finished the first. If Gregoire did a recount, cut the lead in half to 21... Finis. Over.
Second, the election CANNOT be reversed by a partial recount. Only a full, statewide recount could reverse the election. The only reasons for doing a partial is to 1) try and avoid the costs of requesting a full statewide recount; and/or 2) check areas of "concern" to see if there is enough vote change to justify a full statewide recount.
And this is NOT Cook County, Illinois- when did Cook County last have a Republican prosecutor? Or was only one short of a Republican Council majority? As one-party as Seattle is, King County has significant Republican strength...
9. One count to check the votes,
One recount to find more,
One recount to change results
And in the Darkness bind them.
Thanks Jim for inspiring the silliness.
10. I can't wait, I see the trend, you see the trend, in three weeks, Gregorie will be ahead, and all you fools will be singing the other song.
11. What stinks in Adams and Franklin County? Is some of those high repub precints in those counties, there were more votes than there are are registered voters. Let's take a peek under your sheets. Since you are the Party that wants to legislate inside the bedroom, you won't mind, I'm sure.
12. Nathan, stick around here, you'll get your chance to whine for a unlawful recount after Gregoire pulls ahead... oh yea, I forgot, Repugs don't count votes, they head to the courts to override them.
13. sha,
Relax. I've been consistent in saying I don't blame Gregoire for requesting a recount. On the other hand, I don't see any reason why I shouldn't make fun of the whole process. If a moment of silliness brands me as a partisan whiner, well then I'm a partisan whiner with a sense of humor.
If the unthinkable should happen and a statewide hand recount puts Gregoire up, well then I'll be extremely suspicious, but will start making plans to help Rossi decimate Cantwell in '06. That and I'll start referring to Gregoire as the Governor of King County.

I concur. I say hand recount for those reasons and also because both sides have valid complaints.
Rossi will win, and Gregoire will end up like Al Gore: A useless loudmouth who has lost all respect with the public.
15. "sha" what're you smokin'? You are simply fool. For your information, Dino Rossi has won and is the Governor-ELECT of Washington State. Stop talking stupid rats!
16. "Gregoire: Governor of King County". Now that's a T-Shirt or bumper sticker I would buy.
17. That's a great one Chris, "Governor of King County" ... I love it! I'd buy one too!
I took a quick look around and King 5 is the only Seattle media outlet running an opinion poll asking "Should Christine Gregoire concede?" http://www.king5.com/cgi-bin/bi/surveys/tSurvey.cgi?survey=2005&view_result=View%20results
While no web poll is ever scientific, 62% voted yes before the poll closed.
Most of the media should be ashamed of themselves. The Seattle PI charging "irregularities" (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/201025_govraced.html) and the Seattle Times reporting that the recount resulted in a "42 vote lead". It's a 42 victory. A determination paid for by the taxpayers *twice*.
18. Mark Q. Rhoades - Theresa LaPore was in Palm Beach County, not Broward. Just an FYI...
19. Sha- before blaming Republicans for Franklin County, note that the Franklin County Auditor, in charge of the elections there, is a Democrat...
