There are some huge differences between State Superintendent of Public Schools candidates, Terry Bergeson and Judith Billings. Bergeson supports accountability, standards and charter schools. Billings is a member of the Axis of Evil who opposes standardized tests and school choice.
But Bergeson and Billings agree on one thing:
Both candidates favor Initiative 884, which would add a percentage point to the state sales tax to pay for education programs -- but neither thinks it's a cure-all.The billion dollar a year I-884 tax increase would only be the beginning. Notice that the education establishment will never tell you how much money is enough. They only ask for more. "It doesn't solve the funding problem," Bergeson said. "It gives us what we need immediately to take that next jump ahead."
