WSJ: "Education Battle Brews In Washington State"

Today's Wall Street Journal reports that "Education Battle Brews In Washington State"

Teachers Union Opposing Charter Schools Makes Progress Against Well-Heeled Opponents

In one corner is the Washington-state teachers union; in the other are some of the country's richest men. The fight is over charter schools, and the millionaires are on the ropes.

Oy. That's an unfortunate way to frame the issue. The battle isn't between the teachers' union and the wealthy individuals who are generous to help fund the campaign for school choice. The battle is really between the well-heeled teacher unions and the state's (lower income) public school parents whom the unions prevent from having a say in their own children's education.

This campaign sign spotted over at the teacher union's website should clear up any confusion:

"Public School Employees Urge You to Reject R-55"

The Public School Employees' campaign to defend their underpeforming monopoly is called "Protect Our Public Schools". Yes, when the Public School Employees say "our public schools", it's as if they think the public schools belong to the employees themselves, but not to the members of public who send their kids to the public schools.

The Approve R-55 Coalition needs your help to defend school choice from the school employee unions and their paid-for Democrat politicians who only want to expand the union's monopoly. Do what you can to help.

1. Teacher Unions good. School choice bad.

You know, it's been just over 10 years now since I've been in a Washington State public school, but that's not 10 years long enough. I thought it was bad then, but I could not imagine how depressing it would be, today.

2. I'm a little dissapointed in the R-55 campaign. They should make more of the fact that Washington is one of the few states in the nation to still resist charter schools. They should have ads featuring success stories from all across the country, and ask, "If Minnesota/California/Wherever students deserve charter schools, don't ours too?"

3. That's a good idea, Timothy. Hope the campaign picks up on it.
